ANTICIPATED ABSENCES REMINDERS

We are in that time of year where families are thinking about taking an extended trip around Spring Break and students are competing in tournaments, dance competitions and other activities. All of these require you to submit an anticipated form 3 days prior. An anticipated absence request WILL NOT be approved if the following are not met:

• The number of days requested will result in your child having more than 15 total absences. This total is parent and doctor's notes combined. If you don't know how many days your child has been absent, this information can be found on the parent portal.
• There aren't enough parent notes to cover the days requested, each child has 9 parent notes per year. For example, if you are requesting 4 days but only have 2 parent notes left then 2 of the days will be unexcused. Once your child uses their 9 parent notes a doctor's excuse is required for the days to be excused.
• The form is not submitted before the absence.

*2nd-5th grade: please keep ACAP testing dates in mind to avoid missing any testing days (see specific dates below)

*If your child will be absent 10 or more days due to traveling please contact the registrar, at bmarcrum@hoover.k12.al.us, for additional information.

The time to show off your talent is here! The annual Deer Valley Talent Show is March 14 at the Hoover High School's Performing Art Center. Registration deadline for both the form and payment is February 14. Further information can be found at the Talent Show's website below. Payment can be made on MySchoolFees. This fundraiser supports classroom enhancements (books, games, instruments, etc.) for the Talent Show committee members.

Author and illustrator Abby Hanlon will share her love of drawing and writing children's books with K-3rd grade students in early March. Students at DVES can't get enough of the Dory Fantasmagory series! Our 33 copies are always in use, making it the most borrowed series in our library. After ten years of invitations from Mrs. Sorkin, her dream of visiting is finally coming true! If you and your child haven't read the first book in this series, you're seriously missing out on some fun!

There will be 3 schools hosting her in our area, so plan ahead and get your book now if you want her autograph! Deer Valley will not be selling books for this event, so please order from your favorite vendor. The library will begin accepting books for autographing in late February to prepare for the upcoming event. Thank you to our PTO for sponsoring all fees associated with this author visit!

Don't forget about our great public library, the Hoover Public Library! Here are some upcoming events to consider:

• Read with Libby, the library dog - Several dates to choose on the HPL website. Students can read to their facility dog in order to build confidence. Registration required. Any age.
• Roll for Initiative, LARP for Kids - Tuesday, January 21 from 4:00-5:00. Become your own unique character to defeat the BBEG in this live-action role play adventure. Grades 5-7 and must register online.
• Story Lab: Here, There Be Dragons - Monday, January 27 from 4:00-5:00 (STEAM like class for 3 to 8 year olds)

Deer Valley PTO is thrilled to announce the "Sole"-mate Sneaker Ball for this year's Family Weekend! Lace up your favorite kicks and save the date for February 7 & 8! Tickets are available now on My School Fees through February 4. Physical tickets will not be provided - just check-in when you arrive.

We are in need of corporate sponsors for our Family Weekend! Sponsorship is $50 and your business name will be displayed on a banner during the weekend events, included in our school newsletter, and posted on our social media pages. If your business is interested, please fill out the form below and drop it off at Deer Valley by January 27. Payment is accepted on My School Fees or via a check payable to Deer Valley PTO. This same form was also sent home with each student earlier this week. THANK YOU for supporting Deer Valley and our Family Weekend!
