KCS Community Connection

Principal's Message ~ Jan 10th, 2025
Please read at home with your child! The research is clear... reading at home helps children become better readers. While we don't have any homework for our students in kindergarten through second grade, we expect all students to be reading at home on a regular/daily basis. Your efforts to read with your child and support their reading at home are greatly appreciated. Teachers have been talking about strategies to nurture our community of readers at KCS, and reading at home is part of that effort. Scroll below for more on this topic.

Winter Weather is here... Is your child ready for outside recess?
As a district, we pride ourselves in honoring the developmental needs of all students. To that end, we endeavor to provide regular opportunities for elementary students to experience movement and exercise throughout the day. Outdoor recess at elementary schools is one such opportunity that occurs on most days, which we value. Unfortunately, there are times throughout the year in New England where the weather conditions simply do not allow us to offer an outdoor recess that would be comfortable, safe or manageable for students and staff, and on those days children still experience recess, but it occurs indoors.
The conditions that generally cause us to opt for inside recess rather than taking the children outside include temperature with wind-chill, heat and humidity, and sleet, rain, hail or ice. When we are experiencing severe weather or limiting conditions, we continue to watch the weather throughout the day, and if those conditions change in time for recess, then we change our recess plans as appropriate. For that reason, on a given day, children in one grade may have indoor recess, while children in another grade may go outside for recess. Similarly, conditions (such as ice) on the playground at one school may be very different from conditions at a school on the other side of town or across the district on the same day.
All of our schools utilize the recommended National Weather Service indices for heat/humidity and wind chill. Administration at each building makes decisions related to such things as wind, rain, sleet, hail or ice. Generally, in Maine, when recess is cancelled, it is due to the cold. We utilize a “Real Feel” of 15 degrees as the cut off, which means that the real feel temperature must be 15 degrees or higher for students to go outside in the winter. For consistency, all schools utilize Acuweather.com to make those decisions.
Please, make sure to send your child to school ready for outside recess on all school days. Once we get snow on the playground, students will be limited to playing on the pavement if they do not have snow pants and boots to play in the snow. Some of our students are arriving at school without proper attire for the cold. If you need support with winter attire for your child, please contact our school counselor, Laura Smith, at lasmith@rsu21.net.

In an effort to be proactive and equip our KCS families for conversations with children around unexpected events, we are sharing this information with you. If you would like to discuss further, please reach out to our school counselor, Laura Smith, at lasmith@rsu21.net.
