If you know of an organization that would like to participate, please contact the school to incorporate new partnerships. We are thankful to Jennifer Ewart, THS teacher, who initially applied for the Education Enrichment Fund for this day of service. The money provided through this grant allowed for resources and transportation to varied locations. Lastly, we are thankful to continue to build our community partnerships and teach students the importance of both civic action and service to our community.

THS Summer Volunteer Opportunity
THS is looking for student volunteers for the Thomaston Summer Enrichment Program this year. Student volunteers would be assigned to a classroom of students and would be responsible for things like playing games with the kids, helping to run centers, playing on the playground with kids, reading stories, and anything else the classroom teacher needs. You would also be invited on our field trip! The program runs from June 17-July 12 (no school 7/4 &7/5) from 8:00-12:00. Students can earn up to 75 hours of community service if you volunteer for all 4 weeks! Only students aged 13-17 are eligible to volunteer at this program. I am also looking for students who are athletes (or who participate in another activity like dance or gymnastics) to share their talents with kids! Please fill out the following google form to sign up! If you have any questions, please email ckiely@thomastonschools.org.

Marzano Academy Updates
We are very proud of both students and staff for their continued efforts towards the implementation and use of proficiency scales in Thomaston High School classrooms. Students are familiar with use of proficiency scales at varying stages depending on the course. When using the proficiency scales, students have reported clear learning outcomes as a result of the proficiency scales. This year, teachers have modified their scales to meet the curricular needs of their respective courses.

Congratulations to our CAS Recipients!
8th Graders Travel to Gettysburg & Washington DC!
With support from our Board of Education, students in grade 8 traveled to Gettysburg and Washington, DC in April. Students traveled the grounds of Gettysburg and visited the Holocaust museum, African American museum, Library of Congress, Mount Vernon and many other historical sites. Four 8th grade students, Cole Ballance, Kody Michaud, Mia Orsini, and Violet Alvey were selected to present a wreath on behalf of Thomaston, CT to the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. This was a tremendous honor. We are thankful for the opportunity to allow for first hand experiences such as these trips to reinforce history and its impact. Thank you to the 8th grade team of teachers and Nurse Stancavage for chaperoning this trip. Click here to view more photos from this field trip!
Congratulations to our Staff in the Arena Mrs. Quick and Mr. McGowan!
We are excited to announce our April Staff in the Arena! This month, we celebrate Mrs. Deb Quick, THS paraprofessional and Mr. Owen McGowan, THS Music and Band teacher.
Mrs. Quick serves as a one to one paraprofessional at Thomaston High School. One staff member shared the following testimony of Mrs. Quick, "Mrs. Quick exemplifies what it means to be a paraprofessional. She goes above and beyond not only to meet the needs of her 1:1 student, but also the needs of all the students in the building. She is kind hearted and truly sees each student as an individual. I don't know what I would do without the support and help of Mrs. Quick, she is what each person at THS should strive to be." When you see Mrs. Quick in action with our students, she genuinely cares and provides support to each of them, both academically and socially. It is because of her individualized academic support that students are able to make growth and gain confidence in their abilities.
Mr. McGowan, our 7th-12th grade Music teacher, is new to THS this year! As he approaches completion of his first year of teaching, we are so proud to say he is a member of our school community. He not only educates all of our musical programming but he also leads our school band. Mr. McGowan quickly developed a strong rapport with all of our students and staff. Outside of teaching, Mr. McGowan also assisted with this year's spring musical at the Thomaston Opera House. Most recently, Mr. McGowan is working to build the musical program by inspiring students at Center School. We appreciate all of his efforts; both on the stage and in the community!
Congratulations to both staff members! We are thankful for your contributions to the Thomaston High School community.

THS Wellness Check In: Tick Awareness from Mrs. Ewart and Nurse Stancavage
Unfortunately, every season is TICK SEASON. Here is some information to help keep you safe from tick bites and illness.
AWARE = Avoid - Wear - Apply - Remove - Examine
AVOID areas where ticks live. Ticks thrive in wood piles, long grass, leaf piles and beach grass.
WEAR light-colored clothing, long pants and sleeves, socks and close-toed shoes. Tuck hair into a hat.
APPLY EPA-approved tick repellent (such as picaridin or DEET) on skin and an insecticide
(such as permethrin) to clothing & shoes, as directed.
REMOVE clothing upon entering the home; toss into the dryer at HIGH temperatures for
10-15 minutes. Ticks have sticky feet and stick to anything.
EXAMINE yourself and your pets for ticks daily. Check everywhere-ticks love to hide.
Tick-borne illnesses can be devastating and debilitating. The ticks that cause disease are deer ticks and are very small. They have a red body and black head. Dog/wood ticks are larger.
Take care and check EVERYWHERE on your body after being outside.
