Parent Review Night
Washington State law requires that every student receives HIV/AIDs prevention education in grades 5 through 12. Because this unit covers sensitive topics, Washington State law and SBLSD board policy require that parents/families are provided the opportunity to preview these lessons.
The Sumner-Bonney Lake School District (SBLSD) is hosting a curriculum night for families to preview the HIV/AIDS prevention curriculum for students enrolled in the following:
6th and 7th grade students (HIV/AIDS),
2nd semester 8th grade Skills for Life (HIV/AIDS) and
9th grade Health classes (Health content), and
Applicable 10th through 12th grade classes (HIV/AIDS).
The Curriculum will be available for preview. This is an opportunity for parents and guardians to understand the health content for grades 6-12, preview teaching materials and ask questions about the resources used in the classroom.
Family Preview for Health Curriculum Spring 2024

Upcoming survey asks for student and family feedback
Spartan Families:
In striving to provide the best possible education for all students, we value feedback to help us continually improve. The district will soon be conducting a Center for Educational Effectiveness survey with families (of students in K-12) and students (only in grades 4-12).
The survey window is April 15-25. Students in grades 4-12 will take the survey in class at a date specified by their school.* Families will receive a link to the survey via email and text on April 15.
The multiple choice surveys, available in multiple languages, will ask questions around the topics of support, safety, trust, environment and equity.
*If parents wish to opt their child out of this survey, please contact your child’s school.

Become familiar with inclement weather procedures
It doesn’t take a winter snow storm to impact school operations. Some fall weather conditions, such as wind storms, have the potential to require implementation of our inclement weather procedures.
Here are reminders to help you prepare for possible changes to bus and school operations due to inclement weather:
Refer to inclement weather procedures for an outline of what to expect regarding communications and operations.
For safety reasons, there may be a need to offer limited transportation and use inclement weather bus routes. This means buses will generally run on main roads rather than side streets or through neighborhoods.
We use “zones” to define inclement weather bus routes. Please become familiar with the zone your child’s bus route falls within. It is the responsibility of families to know if they live on an inclement weather route.
Bus drivers will hand out hard copies with the inclement weather bus zone specific to your child in early December. For questions, please call the Transportation Department at (253) 891-6400.
Follow us on social media for updates: Facebook, @SumnerSchoolDistrict and Instagram, @SumnerBonneyLakeSD.
It’s important to keep in mind that while streets might be clear in the Sumner valley, that’s often not the case on the hill in Bonney Lake, where there’s considerable elevation and tight, winding roads.
Attendance Awareness
Spring into Success: The Importance of Good Attendance
Dear Families,
As we move into March and the spring months, we want to remind families that strong school attendance is essential for student success. With the school year in full swing, this season is a critical time for learning, test preparation, and academic growth. Whether your child is in elementary, middle, or high school, being present every day helps ensure they stay on track.
Here’s why attendance matters in the spring:
✅ Consistent Learning – New concepts and skills build on previous lessons. Missing school can create gaps that are hard to overcome.
✅ Test Preparation – Many schools begin reviewing key material for state tests, final exams, and other important assessments.
✅ Credit & Graduation Readiness – For older students, attendance directly impacts earning course credits and staying on track for graduation.
✅ Social & Emotional Growth – Daily attendance helps students stay connected with friends, teachers, and extracurricular activities.
Let’s work together to make every school day count! If your family needs support with attendance, please reach out to your child’s school—we’re here to help.
