Technology Device Turn In
With the end of the school year just around the corner, we will begin collecting and inventorying student devices. iPad and iPad Minis will be collected, cleaned, and serviced for next year's incoming Kindergarteners and First Graders. Students' devices in grades 2-5 will also be cleaned, inventoried, and labeled for next year's use in 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade (there is no need to remove stickers as they will be receiving their same device next year). Incoming 2nd graders will receive a Chromebook on or around the first day of school.
Please send your child's device and charger to school beginning May 28th, they will not be returning home prior to the end of the school year. Devices will not be sent home over the summer, due to the maintenance mentioned above. ALL DEVICES AND CHARGERS MUST BE RETURNED BY JUNE 3RD.
Library Book Return!
With the school year coming to an end, please remember to return all school library books to Mrs. Mader ASAP!
Howe PTA Updates
It's here... the last week of school and that also means hooray... our last PTA newsletter.
Friday, June 7th is the last day of school. Join us on the front lawn at 11:45 a.m. (just before dismissal) for our traditional Fifth Grade Clap-out, where we will celebrate our graduating 5th graders one last time before they head off to Mellon in the fall. The fifth grade activities committee has arranged for several food trucks to be on the blacktop at dismissal. Bring money for lunch, or pack your own picnic and grab a sweet treat - stay and celebrate another great school year!
Last week was action-packed, and several thank-yous are in order.
- Thanks to Joanna Parekh for all of her work this year. Most notably, for chairing this year's yearbook committee; yearbooks were distributed last week and it is AMAZING. She worked behind the scenes with intention to be sure all students were included in the pages. She was also instrumental in redesigning the PTA webpage on the district website, and helping to ensure that all families could find PTA information about events in one place.
- Thanks to Heather Hathy for coordinating volunteers and working with Mr. Kolling on the outstanding field day event this past week. Also thanks to the parent volunteers who helped throughout the day to make this event possible.
- Thanks to Margeaux Everhart, Sally Berri Pratt, and the entire Fifth Grade Committee for the outstanding festivities the fifth graders have enjoyed and will enjoy this week which will culminate in the 5th grade pool party, the memory books and swag bag distribution to name a few. Their work in communicating, fundraising and making memories for the outgoing fifth graders was so appreciated.
- Thanks to Ashley Flavin, who led the transformation of an underutilized green space in the front of the building into a beautiful garden for all to enjoy.
- Thanks to the PTA executive board team: Heather Moore, Marissa Johnston, Matt Rizzutto, Tim Kellner, Maggie Peak, Aimee Danley, and Greg Engle. Many if not all of us have full-time jobs in addition to serving on the board, which is to say, all of us are busy people - unpaid volunteers who stepped up to help behind-the-scenes ensuring we had a successful year, but also improving systems to make things better for the future. It was truly a pleasure working with you!
- I also want to thank our building secretary Mrs. Briscoe for all of her help and support. She began mid-year as a long-term substitute for Mrs. Hagins. Whether it was with fielding parent questions about PTA events, facilitating clearances for the hundreds of parent volunteers, or helping PTA event chairs to get information shared in take-home folders.
Each year on the last day of school (June 7th) we line the hallways with our students and staff to give the 5th graders a round of applause as they walk through the halls of Howe for the last time! Join us on the front lawn at 11:45am (just before dismissal) to greet your 5th grader as we Clap Out this graduating class one final time before they head to Mellon in the fall! You won't want to miss this!
Food Truck Celebration!
This year we have added something special for all Howe students and families! Stick around after the Clap Out and dismissal for our Food Truck Celebration! Organized by the 5th grade committee, Auntie Anne's, Vaya Mexican Kitchen, and Frios Gourmet Pops will be on the Anawanda courts from 12-2:30pm selling delicious lunch time eats and frozen treats. All trucks accept cash and cards. The field will be open to everyone for gathering and games. Restrooms will be accessible through door 14.
5th Grade End of the Year POOL PARTY!!!
DATE: June 7th
TIME: 7:15-9:15pm
WHERE: Mt Lebo Pool
WHO: All 5th graders!!!
ACTIVITIES: Games, DJ, Raffle, Prizes, Food, Pool, and LOTS of FUN!
Parents can stay or drop off as we send our 5th graders off with a proper party! Pizza, snacks, treats, and drinks will be provided. Please reach out to Fifthgradeactivities@howepta.org (by June 1st) if your child has a food allergy that you would like for us to know about. Summer in the Howe Garden
Many hands make light work! Volunteers will continue to meet at the garden during the summer to keep plants tended and watered. Email Ashley at garden@howepta.org to get on the mailing list for the summer.

HOWE SCHOOL SAFETY REMINDERS
- All visitors must "buzz in" at the main door (A1) even if staff are present and go directly to the office for check in. Students, staff, parents/guardians, visitors are not permitted to hold open the door for anyone who is entering the building.
- Arrival and Dismissal Procedures- Please always utilize our crosswalks when crossing the street.
- Per District policy, please keep pets off school grounds.
- Please refrain from using the faculty lot to drop off and/or pick up your student(s).
Accessible Parking Spaces
As we continue to strive for a safe and inclusive environment at our school, I want to take a moment to address the importance of respecting accessible parking spaces at Howe.
It has come to our attention that there have been instances where the designated accessible parking spaces have been misused or occupied by vehicles without the appropriate permits.
Accessible parking spaces are specifically designated to accommodate individuals with disabilities who may have limited mobility. By utilizing these spaces without proper authorization, we not only inconvenience those who genuinely need them but also undermine the principles of equality and accessibility.
Please review the following guidelines regarding accessible parking spaces
Respect designated spaces: Please refrain from parking in areas designated for individuals with disabilities unless you possess a valid accessible parking placard.
Display permits prominently: If you are authorized to use accessible parking spaces, ensure that the permit or placard is visibly displayed in your vehicle at all times while parked in these areas.
Avoid misuse: Do not use accessible parking spaces if you do not require them or if you are only making a quick stop. These spaces are reserved for individuals with disabilities who depend on them for accessibility.
IMPORTANT SAFETY REMINDER
To assist in keeping our students and community members safe, please refrain from parking in the Go Zone. Go Zone spaces are designated for student drop off. If you need to walk your student(s) to the building, please find parking along our side streets.
Go Zone rules and safety suggestions:
Please…
- Be sure students always exit from the passenger side of the vehicle.
- Do not park your car or wait in the Go Zone.
- Do not leave your car unattended during arrival or dismissal time.
- Do not enter the Go Zone in the afternoon until your child is dismissed and waiting for you on the Go Zone sidewalk. If you arrive early or your child is not at the Go Zone sidewalk, you must either park in a designated area or circle the block.
GO ZONE PARKING REMINDERS
As a reminder, please refrain from parking in the Go Zone.
As a result of a cooperative effort involving the Mt. Lebanon School District, the Mt. Lebanon Police Department, and the PTA, Go Zones were created near the entrance of each elementary school where drivers can drop off and pick up children in the safest and most efficient way possible.
The success of the Go Zones requires compliance by drivers dropping off children before school and picking up children after school.
EMERGENCY CONTACT INFORMATION
It is of vital importance that the Emergency Medical Contact/Release Information for each of your children is updated in the Dashboard.
Please note the following to update your contact information in the Dashboard:
You must go in under the parent/guardian’s Dashboard account, not the student’s
Emergency Medical Contact/Release Information is located under the “Account Preferences” tab
Please include parents/guardians (in priority order) as part of your four contact options if you wish to be contacted.
Schoology
Schoology, the Mt. Lebanon School District's official Learning Management System (LMS) provides families with a deeper look into their student's classwork and learning progress. As we started last school year, all online assignments will be collected through Schoology.
Calendars in Schoology will have school events listed as well as course events and assignments. The Schoology calendar will continue as the primary calendar for classroom activity. Classroom assignments, due dates, reminders and other events will be posted by teachers in the Schoology calendar.
We hope this video is useful as you get started with your account! Additionally, an orientation course for families, MTLSD’s Family Guide to Schoology, is available within the Schoology platform. Visit our website (www.mtlsd.org/families/technology/schoology) for directions to join this course!
If you have questions or need support with Schoology, please email us at SchoologySupport@mtlsd.net
Elementary Handbook
The Elementary Handbook contains useful and important information regarding school policies, procedures, and programs. The Elementary Handbook information is arranged by topics. Please browse the topic list in the handbook linked below to find the information you need.
MTLSD BULLYING POLICY AND REPORT FORM
The Mt. Lebanon School District’s goal is to establish a secure school climate, conducive to teaching and student learning that is free from threat, harassment, and any type of bullying behavior for any reason including membership any protected class including, but not limited to, race, color, age, creed, religion, sex, gender, gender identity, sexual orientation, ancestry, national origin, familial status, language, genetic information, pregnancy,, or handicap or disability. One of the District's core values calls for each member of our learning community to demonstrate respect toward others.
Objective
The objective of this policy is to:
1. Provide a safe, positive environment for learning through prompt resolution of bullying incidents;
2. Educate students, employees and parents about bullying, its adverse impact on students and the District generally, and how to prevent and resolve bullying incidents, so as to minimize the potential for bullying;
3. Communicate to District students, employees and parents the District's commitment to countering and preventing bullying and to inform the District community of the specific measures the District will undertake to resolve problems in this area;
4. Delineate disciplinary consequences for bullying and authorize the development of prevention, intervention and education programs; and
5. Identify the appropriate school staff person to receive reports of incidents of alleged bullying.
Please note that an electronic Anti-Bullying Report Form is on the school's website (and linked below) for your ease of use in reporting bullying concerns.
Mobile Phones and Smart Watches
Some reminders about the use of smartwatches and mobile phones by students during the school day:
- Students are expected to keep mobile phones stored in their lockers
- Mobile phones should be in silent or airplane mode when stored away
- Students may take their mobile phones with them if heading home
- Video and audio recording of other students and staff members with personal mobile phones/devices and smartwatches is prohibited
- Students should keep smartwatches in silent or airplane mode once inside the school
- Students are not permitted to call home (or to others) using personal mobile phones or smart watches
- If students need to speak with a parent or family member, they need to seek staff approval to use one of the many phones we have located throughout the school
- Students that are ill or not feeling must be seen in the health office and are not to call home using a mobile phone or smartwatch - the health office staff will make ALL phone calls home when students are ill
- Family members should not call or text students during the school day - if a student's smartwatch alerts the student of an incoming notification during class time, it distracts everyone that hears the device
