Fifth Grade Wax Museum
Why Do Performances Matter?
It is the season for performances. On Friday, our fifth graders did their "Wax Museum" presentations. Our Art Show is Tuesday evening from 5:00-7:00. Our Music Concerts for 3rd and 4th grade are May 7 and 9. Our SC READY tests are coming up. Even our Field Day is a type of performance. But, why do these displays matter and are they good for kids? 1. Performances help show what we know. What do you do in art/music/PE/Spanish/French/English class? As parents, we send our children to school and when we ask what they learned today, the answer is often "I can't remember" or "We did stuff." These showcases of learning give you a glimpse and insight into what has been happening all these days in classes. Our children are assessed and have grades but when they perform, they show us what they really know and what they really can do. Their learning is "poured out" so others can see their amazing gifts and abilities and talents. 2. Performances challenge kids to do their best. It is their time to shine, their time to show up, and their time to put forth their best effort. These demonstrations can be somewhat stressful (for all involved.) That stress can be good to push us a little more and help us see that we may be more capable than we think. Peak performances happen when we go just a little farther than we think we can. Doing this in safe environments at the elementary level helps our children have the confidence to take risks on bigger stages in their future. (Of course, they can also be overwhelming if there is too much pressure.) These learning displays, in any area or arena, challenge our children to take their next step in their learning. 3. Performances reflect how much our students have grown. As a dad, I was always surprised by what my kids could do (and still do.) I have often asked my wife, "Did you know he/she was able to do that?" There is such joy in seeing our children make those learning leaps in their academics or arts or sports. As parents, we see them as big jumps but the reality is our teachers and coaches see small "hops" that happened day by day in classrooms and on ballfields. For all of us, we celebrate with pride their effort and progress. The greatest win is always seeing their growth.
We appreciate your support in being present for your child. Whether or not they tell you, they look to see if you are in the audience and if you are there for them. I hope you will join us in celebrating their amazing performances.
Strength and Blessings,
Mr. Maness
