Principal's Message
Community,
Happy 2025!! I hope you all were able to enjoy time with loved ones during the break. It was great to welcome our kids back last week and they absolutely held it down! We have several announcements and a busy next seven (7) weeks as we prepare to launch Yondr pouches for cell phones, celebrate the Lunar New Year along with Black History Month.
We recently had a staff meeting where we shared and discussed collaboration and inquiry strategies. It was fantastic work that saw us increase academic engagement across all three grade levels!
I hope to see you at our next community event, January 22nd (6-7pm) at Jefferson High School where we will discuss the Yondr/Cell Phone implementation plan. Please note, this is for ALL Harriet Tubman Middle School Families; Even if your child is going to go to Grant HS, you should still plan on attending!
Take care
Upcoming Important Dates
MAP testing: January 14-16 and 21-23
We are getting ready for the district MAP testing (learn more here) over the next two weeks. Our goal as a school is to provide the most conducive testing environment so that your students can show their knowledge. Students will be testing with their classroom teachers, they will do their reading test January 14-16, and their math test the following week January 21-23.
Things you can do to support your student before testing:
To create a secure testing environment we will be collecting phones and locking them up during testing to keep them safe. Each student will get a bag with their name on it to put their phone in. These bags will all be locked up by their teachers until the end of the testing session. If your student does not feel comfortable with this please have them leave their phone at home during those days
Encourage students to bring a book or other non-digital activity to do in case they finish testing early
Students perform best when they get a full night's sleep and eat a good breakfast, please encourage your student to do both. Breakfast will be provided at school as it always is
If there is anything else you need us to know, please email dtwiss@pps.net

Yondr (Cell Phones) Implementation Family Meeting: 1.22.2025
Harriet Tubman Middle School will be launching Yondr pouches in the coming weeks. In collaboration with the PPS School Board approving a Yondrs "Off and Away" policy for grades 6-12, we are also collaborating with Ockley Green Middle School and Jefferson High School to launch policies this school year.
On Wednesday, January 22nd, we will have a family engagement meeting to talk through our plan while receiving feedback. The meeting will take place at Jefferson HS, along with Jefferson HS and Ockley Green MS, from 6:00-7:00pm.
We have been working with our PTSA, Site Council, Black Parent Affinity and staff to develop intentional plans for our building. We also pushed into our Student Council class today (1.13) so we can begin working with our students while ensuring their voices are being elevated. Next week, we will push into classes so we can work with our entire student body. That team will consist of our student support team (School Climate Specialist, Counselor and Restorative Justice Coordinator), community partners (SEI, ML20) and Student Council!

The student athletes represent their neighborhood high school cluster. Thanks in part to the financial support of many individuals, PIL Youth Sports offers football, cross country and girls' volleyball in the fall; girls' and boys' basketball and wrestling in the winter; and baseball and co-ed track and field in the spring. Fall season begins in late August, winter practices begin in mid November and spring practices begin in late February. Details for each sport can be found on the PIL website under "PIL Youth Sports".

Student ID Badges
Per PPS policy, all students are required to wear their school I.D. badge during the school day. We have supplied lanyards and holders for all students. There are no exceptions to the policy.
Parent / Guardian Visits
At Harriet Tubman Middle School, we would love for you to visit your student and to support our building! Please make sure to sign in at the office and if you would like to stay, per district safety policy, you will be asked to show your ID and will receive a visitor badge. Please remember to return to the main office to sign out.
If you would like to visit a classroom, you will need to provide educators with a 24 hour notice. This can be done via email or over the phone with the educator.
All volunteers must have a background check. Ask our front office how to get that going!
Code of Conduct Agreement
Harriet Tubman Middle School has several policies and expectations for our students and our Code of Conduct Agreement (CCA) outlines each of them. You will see expectations for students in regards to our general building expectations (A.S.K.), our attendance system (ASERT), behavior referrals and discipline ladder, cell phone policy, social media and attire expectations as well as our food policy.
Our goal is to create a safe and inclusive environment for all students. It is your responsibility to review our building expectations and to ensure both you and your student/s understand HTMS and PPS expectations and policies.
If you have any questions and or concerns, please reach out to our team for support.
