CATCHING UP WITH... Mrs. Edmonston
We had another wonderful week at Canyon View Elementary School. On Wednesday, our fourth grade students participated in a Gold Rush Day where they learned about everyday life during the Gold Rush through hands-on experiences. Thursday evening was the Annual CVES Science Fair, hosted by Team CV. Students in all grades had the opportunity to present their science fair projects to volunteer judges. Making the evening extra special, the San Diego Astronomy Association set up their telescopes at the event and our coyotes were able to view a number of planets and stars!
We are looking forward to another great week at Canyon View. This Thursday is VAPA day with a focus on Music around the world. Take a look at the flyer below for more information about what our students will be learning.
Let's Make it a GREAT week!

Both teams conducted thorough reviews to ensure alignment with state standards. ELA materials were evaluated using the CA ELA/ELD Framework and CA Common Core Standards, and the Economics materials were assessed based on the CA History-Social Science Content Standards and Framework. Poway Unified School District invites you to review these materials and provide feedback. The links below will take you to the pages where you can log in, review materials, and provide input (through March 10th).

CATCHING UP WITH... Picture Books for Our Families
Specially Curated Books from Ms. Alice Burge, CVES Library & Media Tech (& CVES Classified Employee of the Year!)
In the words of the U.S. Department of State’s official website: “Each February, National Black History Month serves as both a celebration and a powerful reminder that Black history is American history, Black culture is American culture, and Black stories are essential to the ongoing story of America — our faults, our struggles, our progress, and our aspirations. Shining a light on Black history today is as important to understanding ourselves and growing stronger as a Nation as it has ever been.” Here is a selection of picture books that illuminate some of these essential Black stories, voices and perspectives.
Henry’s Freedom Box: A True Story from the Underground Railroad, written by Ellen Levine, illustrated by Kadir Nelson
Ruby has a special card to give to her grandmother to honor Chinese New Year. But who will help her get to grandmother’s house to deliver it? Will it be clever Rat, strong Ox, or cautious Rabbit? Ruby meets each of the twelve zodiac animals on her journey. This vibrant picture book explores the legend of the Lunar New Year, with a focus on the animals of the Chinese zodiac.
Sulwe written by Lupita Nyong’o, illustrated by Vashti Harrison
From Academy Award–winning actress Lupita Nyong’o comes a powerful, moving picture book about colorism, self-esteem, and learning that true beauty comes from within. Sulwe has skin the color of midnight. She is darker than everyone in her family. She is darker than anyone in her school. Sulwe just wants to be beautiful and bright, like her mother and sister. Then a magical journey in the night sky opens her eyes and changes everything.
My Very Favorite Book in the Whole Wide World written by Malcolm Mitchell, illustrated by Michael Robertson
From Super Bowl champion and literacy crusader Malcolm Mitchell comes a story that shows even reluctant readers that there is a book out there for everyone! Meet Henley, an all-around good kid, who hates to read. When he's supposed to be reading, he would rather do anything else. But one day, he gets the scariest homework assignment in the world: find your favorite book to share with the class tomorrow. What's a kid to do? How can Henley find a story that speaks to everything inside of him? Through his advocacy and his writing, Malcolm Mitchell shows us that every story has the potential to become a favorite and every person has their own story to tell.
CATCHING UP WITH... Parking Lot Safety Reminders
IMPORTANT NOTICE: THE GREEN CONE ZONE IS FOR SPECIAL DAY CLASS FAMILIES ONLY
Additional Parking Lot Reminders
- Attention TK/K Families: You are not required to park and walk students to the gate for drop-off. Use our drive-through drop-off instead. We have supervision from the curb to the blacktop from 8:20 a.m. to 8:45 a.m. Please continue to park and pick-up from the gate at dismissal.
- Attention Grade 1-5 Families: Do not park in the lot for drop-off or pick-up. Instead, use the supervised drive-through pick-up curb west of the office. This allows sufficient parking for our staff, and TK/Kindergarten families.
- Curbside Drop-off/Pick-Up: Use our designated drop-off/pick-up area to the west of the office only. Do not ask your child to meet you anywhere else in the lot. While this might seem faster for you, it slows down our system for everyone and creates a safety hazard.
