Our Mission
At Capt. Mark T. Voss Middle School, we believe that all students should be given the tools and support necessary to be successful and SOAR! Our campus mission statement, SOAR, is an acronym that stands for four tenants of a Voss Eagle: Service, Ownership, Achievement, and Resilience.
Service is recognized on our campus through the Captain's Club award and given to students by teachers who have exhibited above-and-beyond service to our campus community, including their peers, faculty, and staff. Ownership is modeled every day at Voss through our actions and decision-making skills. Students are held to a standard of ownership in and out of the classroom. We recognize the Service, Ownership, Achievement, and Resilience of our students and staff with our Outstanding Student and Staff Awards, celebrations like all A Honor Roll, Perfect Attendance, and Captain’s Club celebrations, and with newsletter recognition, postcards, and emails.
We believe that all students can SOAR and work to provide opportunities for students to learn, grow, and accomplish their goals. We are Eagles so SOAR Eagles SOAR!

WASH YOUR HANDS, WASH YOUR HANDS, WASH YOUR HANDS!!
FLU
Flu season is upon us! Here is some information to help your family stay healthy this flu season.
The flu is spread from person to person by droplets made from coughing and sneezing. It can also spread through germ-infested surfaces such as desks, counters, doorknobs, and more. The flu can vary in length and severity from year to year. Children are two to three times more likely than adults to get sick with the flu, and on average, one in three children in the U.S. is affected by the virus each year.
Here are some tips to help in the fight against the flu:
Wash your hands frequently with soap and water
Cover your mouth and nose with tissues when you cough or sneeze
Avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth
Stay away from others as much as possible when you are sick
Avoid or minimize contact with sick people
It is important to know the difference between cold and flu.
Common symptoms of the flu include fever, severe headache, muscle and body aches, chills, sore throat, exhaustion, and dry cough. Children may also have stomachache, nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea.
Often cold symptoms come on gradually and they include stuffy nose, sneezing, sore throat, and cough.
STREP THROAT:
Strep throat has been also seen frequently at school so far this school year.
Here are some symptoms of strep throat:
Sore throat that can start very quickly.
Pain when swallowing.
Fever.
Red and swollen tonsils, sometimes with white patches or streaks of pus.
Tiny red spots on the roof of the mouth.
Swollen lymph nodes in the front of the neck.
If you or your child has signs or symptoms of strep throat, see your doctor for prompt testing and treatment. If your child has a fever, please keep them home and do not let them return to school until 24 hours have passed and they are fever free and has started antibiotics and been taking it for 24 hours.
STOP THE BLEED: Optional Class for 7th & 8th Graders and staff
Friday, Feb 14 – 1:50 – 2:25 - Advisory Period
A bleeding injury can happen anywhere. Life-threatening bleeding can happen in people injured in serious accidents or disasters. Instead of being a witness, you can become an immediate responder because you know how to STOP THE BLEED®.
The person next to a bleeding victim may very well be the one who’s most likely to save him or her from bleeding to death. By learning how to STOP THE BLEED®, you’ll gain the ability to recognize life-threatening bleeding and act quickly and effectively to control bleeding once you learn three quick techniques. Take the STOP THE BLEED® training course and become empowered to make a life or death difference when a bleeding emergency happens.
What stops bleeding? In a STOP THE BLEED® course, you’ll learn three quick techniques to help save a life before someone bleeds out:
(1) How to use your hands to apply pressure to a wound;
(2) How to pack a wound to control bleeding;
(3) How to correctly apply a tourniquet.
These three techniques will empower you to assist in an emergency and potentially save a life.
All courses are voluntary and offered for 7th & 8th grade students and staff during campus advisory period.

VACCINATIONS for incoming 7th graders
It is time to start getting your child ready for the 7th grade! Texas state law requires students to be immunized against certain vaccine-preventable diseases. All students entering the 7th grade are required to have the following immunizations:
•Tdap
•Meningococcal (MCV4)
Please check with your physician to find out which vaccines your child needs. Some students may have already received these vaccines during a past checkup or doctor visit. If you have turned in the records to me this year, please email me if unsure and I can verify.
Please turn in a copy of your child's immunization record by the end of this school year. You can email them to the school nurse or turn them in on paper. Students with up to date shot records will speed through the line on the first day of school to receive their schedule. You may turn in your vaccination records to the clinic any time.
If you cannot bring the shot record prior to the end of this school year, you will be required to turn the record in on orientation day before the schedule will be released. You may also email it to me over the summer. Please do not turn the record into office staff over the summer break.
Your student will not be able to start the 7th grade without these shots.
You can view all immunization requirements at the Texas Department of State Health Services web site at www.immunizetexas.org
Thank you for your help ensuring a smooth start to the next year!

See Something, Say Something
School safety is very important, and it's up to all of us to work together as a team to prevent bad things from happening.
If we all stay alert and work as a team to report dangerous or suspicious activity, we can help keep our schools safe.
