Lake Bluff Elementary School Family Newsletter
Hello Lake Bluff Families!
We have had a wonderful start to the school year! Students are learning new routines, building relationships, and laying the foundation for a year of learning and growth.
This year marks Lake Bluff’s Centennial. Almost 100 years ago, on September 8, 1924, Lake Bluff opened its doors to 194 kindergarten through 5th-grade students. They were welcomed by Principal Ms. Kobler and nine teachers.
This past Tuesday, September 3, our amazing Lake Bluff staff welcomed over 500 students. It’s incredible to think that the Shorewood Community’s vision 100 years ago—to build the finest school for their children—has not only withstood the test of time but has grown and flourished. We are deeply grateful to the Shorewood community for supporting high-quality public education, investing in our students, and caring for our beautiful school building over the past century.
Please mark your calendars for our Lake Bluff Centennial Celebration on Saturday, September 21. The Shorewood Historical Society will invite the community to take a self-guided tour of our historic school building. Retired teachers will serve as docents, ready to share their knowledge with you. At noon, the PTO will host a celebration on the school grounds. Current and past Lake Bluff families, as well as neighbors and friends, are welcome to attend. Please see the PTO’s flier below for more information.

The Lake Bluff Staff Welcomes You To School!
Lake Bluff Staff - Fall 2024
Hello Families,
I am excited to introduce myself as the new Dean of Students at Lake Bluff. This is my 21st year in education - I spent 17 years as a classroom teacher (grades 1-4) and served as an instructional coach for 3 years. I recently received my Master's degree in Administrative Leadership from UW-Milwaukee.
At Lake Bluff, my focus will be on fostering a safe, inclusive, and positive school environment where every student can thrive. I am deeply committed to the District’s mission of delivering equity, excellence, and growth for all. In my role, I’ll be working closely with students, families, and staff to support academic achievement, character development, and social-emotional wellbeing. I’m here to help guide our students in building resiliency, empathy, and strong decision-making skills through restorative practices and proactive supports.
Outside of school, my husband Mike and I keep busy with our three children—two in college and one in high school—as well as managing the lively energy of our two labrador retrievers.
I encourage you to reach out with any questions, needs, or ideas on how we can work together to create an enriching and supportive environment for all our students. I’m looking forward to a wonderful school year ahead!
Rebecca Benedict
Message from Laurie Burgos - Superintendent
Dear Shorewood Families & Caregivers,
We are deeply saddened by the news of the shooting at Apalachee High School in Georgia on Wednesday. We share in the heartbreak of the families who have lost a loved one due to this senseless act of violence.
School should and must be a place where our students and staff feel completely safe and secure. In the event that an active threat were to occur in Shorewood, we would follow the appropriate emergency response. Should an emergency response be enacted, we would work to communicate additional information with families as soon as possible. We will be practicing our safety drills during Safety Week, September 23-27. If you have any questions about our protocols, please reach out to your building principal.
We also know that children and teens will process this news in different ways. With this in mind, our Student Support Services staff members are available at each of our schools to assist students who may need some extra support. The National Association of School Psychologists has prepared this resource to help families talk to their children about violence.
We want to remind everyone of the importance of remaining vigilant and reporting anything out of the ordinary or suspicious that you may encounter. Whether it is at school, home, or out in our community, if you see something that doesn’t seem right, please say something. Your awareness could make all the difference in preventing a potential threat. There are several reporting options available to you. You can make a report to law enforcement by phone or through the state tipline, Speak Up Speak Out Wisconsin, report to school district staff directly, or use our anonymous online reporting system, StopIt, to share any concerns or information that you have.
We are here to support all of our students and appreciate your partnership in doing so.
Sincerely,
Laurie Burgos, Ph.D.
Superintendent

What's Up Wednesdays and Feedback Fridays in September!
The Shorewood School District is embarking on a visioning and strategic planning process for the 2024-25 school year to create a five-year strategic plan and address the following needs:
- Evaluate our educational model
- Investigate trends in K-12 and higher education and implications for our schools
- Respond to challenges of state funding for public education
- Identify options for financial sustainability
Join us in shaping the future of our schools by sharing your insights and values for our students!
Your input is crucial as we envision what our school system should look like in the years ahead. Please watch your inbox for brief survey opportunities starting this week! Throughout September, we will provide information on What's Up Wednesdays" and seek your voice on "Feedback Fridays". These surveys will be short and take less than 5 minutes to complete.
Shorewood Foundation-Oktoberfest 2024
Join the Shorewood Foundation for the 60th Anniversary Oktoberfest! Friday, September 27 from 5:30 pm to 9:30 pm. The event will take place at Hubbard Park Beer Garden. All are welcome for music, food and fun! The event is free to attend and children 12 and under eat free, but please RSVP to ensure plenty of food!
Nearly 100% of the money under Shorewood Foundation Stewardship is invested into Shorewood. Some of the grants we've received from them have helped with SHS theater sound and lighting improvements, playground equipment and bike racks, and tennis courts at Lake Bluff.
From the Library
Join local author Pete Hill and Shorewood High School English Teacher Eric Gietzen on Thursday, September 12th from 7:00 PM - 8:30 PM in the Village Center Meeting Room for a conversation about Pete's new book "River Profiles: The People Restoring Our Waterways". Pete and Eric will discuss the process of embedding oneself in the daily work of advocates, academics, community organizers, and technical experts - a process that led to this book. In addition, Eric will share how the Shorewood High School program "Watershed Wisdom Experience" engages students in these issues and how we all have a role in the restoration of our waterways.
Visitors in the Building
Please be aware that student drop-off and pickup will be happening outside. Caregivers will not be entering the building during drop-off or pickup. Again, the safety of our learning community is always at the forefront of every decision made. If you need to drop off items to your learner during the school day, please drop off in the main office and we will ensure that your learner receives those items. If you would like to set up an appointment with a staff member, please feel free to reach out to them directly to schedule a date and time that is convenient for all. Thank you for your cooperation with our continued efforts to promote safety and security at Lake Bluff.
