In 6th grade, our Lions are working on ratios in Math, completing their projects on Ancient Egypt in Social Studies, studying energy transfer and waves in Science, and practicing text structures and using figurative language in ELA.

In 7th grade, our Lions are studying forces of motion in Science, proportional relationships and percentages in Math, story elements in ELA, and the French Revolution in Social Studies.

In 8th grade, our Lions are finishing up with manifest destiny in Social Studies, learning about characterization in ELA, studying the hydrosphere in Science, and working with linear relationships in Math.

6th grade mathematicians continued working with unit rates and percentages this week. Four different stores posted ads about special sales on 15-oz cans of baked beans. Which store is offering the best deal? Explain your reasoning. The last store listed is also selling 28-oz cans of baked beans for $1.40 each. How does that price compare to the other prices?

7th grade mathematicians practiced using fractions to describe increases and decreases. Match each situation with a diagram. A diagram may not have a match.

1. Han ate X ounces of blueberries. Mai ate 1/3 less than that.
2. Mai biked X miles. Han biked 2/3 more than that.
3. Han bought X pounds of apples. Mai bought 2/3 of that.

8th grade mathematicians talked about slope and vertical intercept this week. The vertical intercept is the point where the graph of a line crosses the vertical axis. If your pattern continues growing in the same way, how many tiles of each color will be in the 4th and 5th diagram? The 10th diagram? Be prepared to explain how your reasoning using math terms.

This week, 6th grade scientists learned about sound waves by experimenting with how vibrations carry sound across different materials. They made "guitars" using rubber bands and cups and then made "telephones" with string and cups. 7th grade physicists used paper, tape, and cardboard to design and build mazes for a ping pong ball. The challenge was to create the contraption that would have the slowest run without letting the ball stop. Try this engineering challenge at home--how do friction, Newton's laws of motion, and slope impact what happens to the ball in the maze?

This week our Lions learned about kitchen tools, practiced CPR, worked on music for the winter concert, began research for debates, finished and tested their ping pong ball mazes, and much more! Ask your student all about what they are doing in their Encore classes!

This month, the Swann Pride is focusing on RESPECT! Watch the following video with your student and talk about what respect looks like to them and how they can show respect to their teachers, peers, and the school!
