4th Grade
Mrs. Conley, Mrs. Marcks & Mrs. Norton
Friday, November 15
Although it seems early to send out this reminder, the weather these days have more control than a calendar date! Please remember to send kids dressed for the weather; coats, hats, gloves, and yes, even snowpants and boots! Make sure that these items are labeled. There are always many pairs of black snowpants in our 4th grade hallway. Also, please remind your child that they will need to change out of snowboots into shoes or dress boots for the day. Thank you!

Reading Workshop/Language Workshop:
Readers began a new unit this week. We have moved from "Relationships" to "Discovery." Our essential question for the next 5-6 weeks is, "How does discovery impact humanity?" The books selected for Language Workshop are all centered around the discovery of different genres of music. Our first book, Duke Ellington, introduces children to the jazz and ragtime music that made Duke Ellington famous. We learned that young Duke Ellington preferred baseball over piano lessons, but found a new love for music when hearing a new type of music called Ragtime. The kids love music, and this unit not only introduces children to new genres of music, they are also learning about the pioneers of music that impacted our world.
Writing Workshop:
Writers are learning about informational text in our new unit. Students started the week with writing a book on Book Creator about a topic that they are "experts" at. This week, we are focusing on creating chapters about subtopics that support the chosen topics. Kids are excited to share their expertise through Book Creator!
Talking Points of ELA
What did you learn about Duke Ellington's life?
What topic did you chose to write about for writing?
Word Study/Grammar
Math Workshop:
Mathematicians have turned into mini computers as they have been working with place value to multiply larger numbers. Linked below are two video strategies of how we have been teaching the 2 strategies in our classrooms. We have found that the structure of the multiplication has been successful for the children. What has been difficult for most is the recall and fluency of math facts. There are many who do not know their math facts. As with addition and subtraction with regrouping, there isn't a magic remedy. With continued practice, and perseverance, children will be able to power through larger digit multiplication.
Partial Products Multiplication
As you review these videos, and watch them with your child, we would suggest you create a 2 digit x 2 digit number, and have your child solve them in front of you. Want a challenge? Solve a 3 digit x 2 digit number, and make numbers with higher numbers like 9, 8, or 7.
