Lanoka Harbor School Newsletter
January 2023
Dear Lanoka Families,
Mrs. Kilmurray and I would like to wish everyone a safe and joyous start to 2025! A new year is a time to rejoice for what the future may bring, and reflect on the many blessings we have in our lives. I can speak for Mrs. Kilmurray and the rest of the LHS staff when I say, that we all count being part of the Lanoka Harbor School community as one of those blessings.
Parent teacher conferences are being held on January 29th - January 31st. Further information and scheduling details will be coming soon from your child's teacher. We hope that everyone can attend.
I would like to thank our PTO executive board members, PTO volunteers, and staff members who assisted in the LHS Winter Workshop. This fun activity always spreads holiday cheer and excitement for our students and their families. Don't forget that our second annual PTO gift auction is coming up on February 8th!
Also, thank you to all of the families that have donated supplies for classroom projects and activities, as well as our collection efforts in support of outside community endeavors. The students always seem so cheerful and proud as they bring in their contributions to the school.
We are wishing you a successful and rewarding 2025.
Sincerely,
Jeffrey Brewer, Principal

A MUSICAL HOLIDAY CELEBRATION š¶
The Lanoka Harbor School Third, Fourth, and Fifth Grade Chorus, under the direction of Mrs. Ferruzza and Mrs. Cottrell, put on a wonderful holiday performance on December 18th. Students participated as singers, dancers, narrators, and instrumentalists. They entertained staff, students, family, and friends. Their outstanding performance was full of holiday spirit! GREAT JOB!
PROUD PAWS š¾
The Lanoka Harbor School Proud Paws Club, students, and staff participated in Candy Canes for Cancer. Buckets filled with candy canes were distributed by the Proud Paws Club members to each classroom. During the week of December 9th - 13th students were invited to purchase candy canes for $1.00. Club members were responsible for restocking the buckets as candy canes were sold.
This building-wide project raised money for Ocean of Love in Toms River. Ocean of Love is an organization that supports families with children who are battling cancer. They provide both emotional and financial support to help these families. The āOceanā stands for Ocean County, so all of the services this organization provides helps families right here in our community. We are proud to report that a donation check for $1,869.00 was presented to Ocean of Love.
The classrooms that led the building with their candy cane sales were:
1st place - Mrs. Ritner - 300 candy canes
2nd place - Mrs. Meyler - 175 candy canes
3rd place - Mrs. Cook - 108 candy canes
We are most appreciative to the families and staff members who participated, and the Lacey PBA and NJ State Police who generously donated supplies. We thank you, and the Proud Paws advisors Mrs. Meyler and Mrs. Supsie for supporting Ocean of Love this holiday season.

HEALTH OFFICE NEWS
Winter marks the start of the cold and flu season. How do you know if your child has the flu or only a cold, and what are the best ways to treat them? Here are tips to help:
Cold - If the illness comes on slowly, with a low or no fever, runny nose, and a hacking cough, it is probably just a cold. They last around a week, but sometimes up to 2 weeks. Colds are most contagious during the first 2 to 4 days after symptoms appear and may be contagious for up to 3 weeks.
Flu - If the illness happens quickly, and is accompanied by chills, a fever, muscle aches, sore throat, and a headache, it is more likely to be the flu. Symptoms usually last for 5 days but can linger for 2 weeks. The flu can lead to pneumonia, so treat it with care and contact a doctor if symptoms appear to worsen.
Prevention - To help avoid getting sick, wash your hands frequently - Donāt share cups or utensils - Get a flu shot - Get plenty of sleep and make sure to eat healthily - Donāt smoke, as it lowers a childās immunity.
Reminder - Regular hand washing is one of the best ways to remove germs, avoid getting sick, and prevent the spread of germs to others!
