Hawthorne STAR Students
We are so excited to announce that every class in Hawthorne earned a shout out during our morning announcements for their September stars. We are so proud of our students for making safe, responsible, and respectful choices. Go Wildcubs!
STEM Lab with Ms. Aboulenein
We are off and running in the STEM lab at HES! Throughout the month of September, the students have done an excellent job reviewing the STEM room rules and routines, using various engineering materials and even started completing STEM challenges!
All students, kindergarten through second grade, are currently enjoying our STEM Fairytale unit. After hearing the story, students are challenged to help the characters solve a problem in some way. For example, after hearing The Three Little Pigs, students were tasked with building a strong, sturdy house for the pigs that would pass the huff and puff test! We learned about building with a sturdy base, communicating with partners and how to improve our designs too! Kindergarten used various building materials, first grade built in stations and second grade had the option of constructing using the Makerspace cart.
This unit is a wonderful way to blend literacy, creativity and engineering together! To make this extra exciting, STEM and library are collaborating so there is more fairytale fun coming in the library as well!
Up next in the STEM room, how can we balance the castle and cloud on top of Jack's beanstalk to help get down?
Portrait of A Learner Focus: Communicator
This month our Portrait of a Learner focus is on being a Communicator. We are learning to:
Exchange ideas, thoughts, opinions and knowledge in a variety of forms and contexts (MTPLCSD Portrait of a Learner).
Our students are learning about the building blocks of communication at Hawthorne. In our classes we are learning to share our ideas, follow rules for conversations, ask questions, and reflect on our ideas.
Ways to Support Conversation at Home
- Practice taking turns in conversation.
- Consider setting aside special time for your family to engage in conversations. For example, you might establish a cell phone free dinner routine.
- When asking questions, instead of asking global questions, ask your children to consider specific ideas. For example: What was your favorite part of the day? What was your least favorite part of the day?
