KEY NEWS FOR EXPLORER FAMILIES
I know that the district has sent out some information about the events at Apalachee High School that I hope you’ve seen in your email inboxes. The overall safety of my students and staff is the top of my priority list all day every day. We have many practices in place that make our campus as safe as possible. I have close to 580 students and my entire staff that are entrusted to my care daily, and I take that responsibility seriously and will continue to do so. You may also have been made aware of some local posts on social media which the district and local police agencies have investigated. To that end, it is another reminder for us as parents to monitor what level of access our children have to social media. I do know that all families have varying levels of comfort when it comes to children and their access to cell phones, the internet, gaming, social media apps, etcetera; but it is always important for parents and guardians to actively monitor what is being seen and posted. Fulton County has a TIP link for students and parents to use to report concerns. It is accessible on the landing page of the District website, our Northwood website, as well as linked here, and I encourage you to utilize it when needed.
My heart did get a wonderful lift this morning when I got to see such a great turn out for our first All Pro Dads meeting of this school year. Thank you to Mr. Chaffer, Mr. Asher and their team of other staff and PTA members who help plan each meeting. Bringing dads and students together at the school for these meetings is so special, and we’re lucky to have such a strong chapter here at Northwood.
Spend time with your loved ones this weekend. The weather on Saturday and Sunday looks to be glorious. Perfect early fall days to enjoy outside together.
With gratitude,
Heather Rucker
Principal
MEDIA CENTER NEWS
We are off to a great start in the Media Center this year! During the month of August, students and teachers checked out 2,448 books, and we added 85 new titles for circulation! Students are also enjoying our new reading corner that they have been requesting for a while now.
DIGITAL CITIZEN: MEDIA BALANCE & WELL-BEING
In August, we began learning about how to be a Digital Citizen. All students in grades K-5 will receive three lessons from Common Sense Media on how to be safe, responsible, and respectful online over the next few weeks. Last month's focus was on media balance and well-being, emphasizing the importance of having device-free moments in our lives. I encourage you to ask your child what they learned about media balance at school. For conversation starters and family tips, please visit the resources linked below as well as visiting Commonsense.org.
Thank you for your continued support!

NORTHWOOD MONTHLY AWARDS - AUGUST
Awards are one of the many wonderful ways we have to recognize and celebrate our Explorers at Northwood. Here is a link to the August award recipients. Congratulations!
SEPTEMBER IS ATTENDANCE AWARENESS MONTH
We want to highlight positive attendance outcomes:
- Students who attend school regularly feel more connected to our community and are engaged in their learning.
- School attendance improves reading proficiency!
- On-time, regular school attendance builds life-long work habits that promote success!
If you have outside circumstances impacting your child’s attendance and would like support, please reach out to our School Counselor, Jennifer Weeks at 470-254-6390.

ICE CREAM & BIRTHDAY CELEBRATIONS
Your child will be recognized at school on his/her birthday, with an announcement on Explorervision and a special birthday pencil. Please do not send cake, cupcakes, balloons, party favors, or party invitations to school as these will not be distributed. If you would like to celebrate your child’s birthday at school you may purchase ice cream from our cafeteria for your child’s class.
- Please email your Explorer’s teacher to find out how many students are in their class.
- Email our Cafeteria Manger Bethany Lopez at Lopezb3@fultonschools.org to place your order at least TWO FULL WEEKS IN ADVANCE of your Explorer’s birthday.
- Ice cream is still $1 each for birthdays. The simplest way to handle the cost is to have money on your Explorers "General" account via the MyPaymentsPlus app.
