Ms. Benitez's Counseling Corner
Creekside Elementary
September 2024
Hello Creekside Parents, Students, and Staff.
This September, our focus is on teaching and reinforcing coping skills with our students. Coping skills are strategies that help individuals manage their emotions, handle stress, and navigate challenging situations effectively. These skills can include deep breathing, mindfulness, positive self-talk, and problem-solving techniques. By equipping students with these tools, we aim to help them handle uncomfortable feelings and approach problems with a clear and constructive mindset.
Additionally, September is Suicide Awareness Month. It's an important time to increase our understanding of mental health and the resources available to support those in need. We encourage open conversations with your children about their feelings and remind you that my counseling office is here to provide support and resources if you have any concerns about your child’s emotional well-being.
Thank you for partnering with me to create a supportive and understanding environment for all our students.

Coping Skills
Beginning of the Year Flyers
In Lewisville ISD, the whole child is at the core of everything we do as a district, including our students' mental, emotional and physical health. With counselors on every campus, LISD knows parents want their children to receive an outstanding education, but more importantly, they want their children to be nurtured and cared for beyond just academics.
The Lewisville ISD Counseling and Social Work Department is grateful to partner with you to support the social emotional needs of all LISD students. We believe education on these issues is key to helping our students become happy, successful people.
Please review these flyers describing different social issues our students may face. If you have any areas that we may assist you or your student, please contact your student’s school counselor.
We appreciate the opportunity to work with your students.

October Bully Prevention Unit
This October, we will be focusing on our Bully Prevention Unit. As part of this, I will be sending out a survey to assess students' knowledge on the 3 R's of Bully Prevention: Recognize, Refuse, and Report. You can view the survey questions using the link provided. Please feel free to reach out if you have any questions or concerns.
Thank you for your continued support in promoting a safe and positive environment for all students!
The online Second Step Curriculum is used by classroom teachers during morning meeting time throughout the year. The school counselor also uses the Second Step Curriculum to teach two guidance lesson units, the Bullying Prevention Unit and the Child Protection Unit. The Bullying Prevention Unit is usually taught in October/November. The Child Protection Unit is usually taught in February/March. Below you will find some resources that tell a little bit more about the program, what will be taught and some example lessons.
The National Suicide Prevention Line
On July 16, The National Suicide Prevention Line changed! The once 11-digit number is now shortened to three digits, 9-8-8. When people call or text #988, they will be connected to trained counselors with the lifeline network.
In 2020, Congress designated the new 988 dialing code to operate through the existing National Suicide Prevention Lifeline’s (1-800-273-8255) network of more than 200 locally operated and funded crisis centers across the country. On July 16, 2022, the U.S. transitioned to using the 988-dialing code, offering an unprecedented opportunity to strengthen and expand the existing Lifeline. The vision for 988 is to have additional crisis services available in communities across the nation, much the way emergency medical services work.
As 988 rolls out across the country, it is vital that the unique needs of children, youth, and young adults are considered to ensure that crisis response services are not traumatizing for children, services are age and developmentally appropriate, and supports stabilize the situation to keep children in their homes and with their families.
