PAHCC in the News
Addison County Chamber of Commerce - Construction Technology
In this month’s edition of the Addison County Chamber of Commerce’s magazine, PAHCC gets another shoutout. In the “behind the scenes” interview with Drew Ward of Silver Maple Construction, she commends Nick and his construction program! Woo-Hoo! Way to go, Nick! Read the article here.
Addison County Economic Development Corporation - High-Tech Manufacturing
Brandon Reporter - The Makery
Our coordinator for The Makery, Shannon Bryant was featured in the Brandon Reporter this week after being elected the first woman elected to the Sudbury Selectboard. The article mentions some of the goals she hopes to achieve, as well as a shoutout to her new position at PAHCC. Read the article here!
Community Partners
Agri-Mark
This month, Dr. VerPlanck and Dr. MacTavish toured the Agri-Mark facility in Middlebury, where Cabot cheese is made. We learned about the cheese-making process, the many uses of the whey byproduct, and most importantly the staff requirements to keep this iconic Vermont farmer co-op in operation.
We heard from a PAHCC culinary alumnus about how well our culinary arts program set him up for the job he loves and the need for stainless steel welding, diesel, and mechanical skills for their many current openings. We look forward to strengthening our partnership with Agri-Mark to create a pipeline of work-ready PAHCC graduates to high-wage, high-demand jobs in Addison County and reinforce their existing workforce with adult education programs.
Hazelett
We recently hosted a visit from Colchester-based Hazelett. The visit has sparked promising discussions about a partnership, with both parties eager to explore mutual benefits. Opportunities such as linking websites, offering tours and job shadows, and providing classroom support have emerged as focal points for collaboration. Additionally, Hazelett's enthusiasm for hosting our students and faculty at their facility and maintaining active engagement underscores their commitment to our partnership.
During the visit, the VP of Manufacturing, Rick Hayden talked about his inspiring professional journey, which started in CTE as a welder, serving as a testament to the transformative power of CTE pathways and reinforcing the importance of our collaboration with Hazelett in shaping successful career trajectories for our students.
McNally Truck and Auto Service
Recently, Loran McNally with McNally Truck and Auto Service has taken over The A. Johnson Co. lumber mill in Bristol. Loran is a PAHCC alumnus in the auto tech program and credits much of his career success to the Career Technical Education training he received while attending. He’s excited to partner with PAHCC as he expands his automotive business, looking to hire technicians in the future and work with students on co-op learning opportunities.
Platt Technical High School
This month Dr. VerPlanck, David Roberts, and Dr. MacTavish hosted a very special guest, David Tuttle, the Department head of Precision Machining and Technology at Platt Technical High School in Milford, CT. He's a seasoned industry professional who transitioned into CTE as a teacher 25 years ago and will be joining forces with us to ensure our 550k High-Tech Manufacturing grant money is well spent.
Part of his visit included a trip to visit three former PAHCC concentrators at work at Middlebury's Mechanical Advantage and a tour with CEO Dave Cole of their recent expansion.

Addison Repertory Theatre - Light and Color
Automotive Technology - Alumna Feature
Former Auto Tech student, Shay Turk is featured in this video from The Curtis Fund. The Curtis Fund is a VSAC program that provides scholarships for Vermont students pursuing a two-year or four-year degree program and scholarships for students pursuing a Certificates of Value (CoV) training program.
The Certificates of Value (CoV) scholarship program provides funding for students enrolled in short-term, career-focused educational or training programs. CoVs are industry-recognized qualifications that prepare students for high-demand, high-wage careers that do not require a college degree. These careers represent a wide range of fields from health care to bookkeeping to coding to advanced manufacturing and much more.
Construction Technology - NCCER and Dewalt Recognition
NCCER (National Center for Construction Education and Research) and DeWalt tools has recognized Nick Cantrick’s Construction Technology program as a Model Program!
NCCER reached out to Nick saying, “We are excited to share that your school has been identified by your partner, Jennifer Landon at ABC New Hampshire/Vermont, and NCCER as a model program. Your work educating the next generation of craft professionals stood out because of your strong community connections and partnership. Thank you for the great work you are doing to get students excited about the construction industry and help them build strong futures for themselves and their communities. As a celebration for your standout work, we want to provide you with a tool package to enhance your program, generously sponsored by DEWALT.”
Construction Technology - SkillsUSA
The big news this month in Construction Tech was SkillsUSA. Six students from both classes competed in the state competitions in Carpentry and TeamWorks. Our two carpenters competed against 14 other students to build a set of blueprints, cut rafters, and layout stair stringers within the allotted time frame.
They did an excellent job using the skills they’ve learned throughout the school year. In the TeamWorks competition, a team of 4 was asked to demonstrate proficiency in 4 building trades: carpentry, plumbing, electrical, and masonry. We stretched ourselves to compete this year but impressed the judges with their framing knowledge and excellent teamwork. We put in hours after school and during lunch to help prepare us for the competition. Congratulations competitors!
Construction Technology - Shed and Tiny House Updates
Students in Construction Tech 1 hung their custom-made doors this week. On Friday, we will install handles and gable end vents, and then our sheds will be ready to ship out. Great work team!
In the Tiny House world, our maple butcher block countertop arrived and we were able to put in the stainless steel top mount sink. Careful marking and measuring made this project successful. We even got an extra cutout to turn into a side table.
Culinary Arts - Age Well Lunches
Our culinary students had two successful lunches with Age Well Vermont this past month! Our April springtime-inspired menu featured a strawberry refresher, bloody mary deviled eggs, pork loin, asparagus, red potatoes, bishop rolls, and lemon bars. We received lots of feedback from guests about how this was the best lunch they’ve had!
Culinary Arts - Co-Op Lunch
The last week of March, culinary students with a day off from co-op had a delicious lunch made in part by their classmate doing a co-op at Shiretown Marketplace in Middlebury.
Culinary Arts - English Credit Through Cooking
Integrating English class into Culinary Arts, students this week made a modified version of Emoni’s Lemon Verbena Tembleque from the book With the Fire on High by Elizabeth Acevedo. Our class made a version of the recipe using mint and lemongrass.
Design & Illustration - SkillsUSA
Design & Illustration had 6 students participate in SkillsUSA VT this year - our first-ever design group from PAHCC to compete. Of the three competitions students entered, we had students medal in two!
Georgie Kiel got the gold in T-shirt design. This competition included both a visual and oral presentation. Georgie's design will be printed on the shirts that will be worn by the Vermont competitors at the national competition in Atlanta.
Jeremy Holzhammer won the silver in advertising design. There were 3 components to this competition: an industry-specific written test, a mechanical challenge where students had to recreate a design exactly, and a creative challenge where students had to complete a design from scratch based on a creative brief.
Design & Illustration - Mushroom Art
Design and Illustration senior Stella Hardy-Mittell sold their painting of shaggy mane mushrooms. The art will soon hang in Dr. VerPlanck's home alongside other professional works by talented artists like Stella.
If you're wondering how realistic the rendition is and why the image caught her eye when walking the halls, check out the comparison to the real thing, an image she took when the self-described "mycophile" first came to Vermont.
Diesel Power Technology - SkillsUSA
Diesel students traveled to the Army National Guard’s Camp Johnson in Colchester this week for the SkillsUSA competition. PAHCC's diesel students are standing with the Pike Industries judge, Craig Russell, a technician from the Williston shop. Students tested in 13 different stations which included a resume/interview station. Our diesel students took the gold and silver medals - Congratulations!
Diesel Power Technology - VMEC
Dr. VerPlanck gave a tour this week to Louis Prou, who teaches courses like Workplace Organization (5S) at the VT Manufacturing Extension Center (VMEC). During the tour, he asked if he could take a picture of the tool room, saying, “It's amazing; it's a perfect example of the principles of 5S!"
Then he took a moment to explain the benefits of outlining where tools go, and how he was now sure which ones were in use. He also mentioned how well-labeled the toolboxes were on the shop floor. Well done, Gretchen. Your tool room might appear in a future VMEC training program as an example of what great looks like!
Diesel Power Technology - Rail View Farm Co-Op
Human Services - SkillsUSA
Human Services juniors, Kassidy Brown and Sophia Lawton each earned silver medals for their performance at this year's SkillsUSA statewide competition.
Kassidy took a written assessment on early childhood development and practices, designed and implemented a preschool lesson plan, read a piece of children's literature, and then interviewed for a professional position in the field.
Sophia also took a written assessment. She then had seven minutes to demonstrate a literacy-based lesson plan that she had designed and implemented in her second-grade classroom at Mary Hogan School.
Both students shared the challenge of performing tasks as though working directly with children - a task which is easier said than done! Congratulations, Kassidy and Sophia!
Human Services - Basic Specialized Care Training
Human Services - Making Music
Silver medalist, Kassidy Brown, put her SkillsUSA lesson plan into action this past week when working with preschoolers from the Addison County Parent-Child Center Playlab! Singing and music-making were followed by the creation of both egg shakers and brightly colored drums!
Industrial Design & Fabrication - HAAS Basic Mill Operator
Introduction to STEM - Chairs from Skis
Medical Professions - Caregiving Skills
Medical Professions - Digestion
Med Pro 2 students wrapped up the month learning about diets. They finished the week before break with dipping donuts!
Med Pro 1 was busy finishing up their blood unit and starting the digestive unit. We started by measuring how long digestive parts were and compared to fruits and vegetables.
Natural Resource Management - Field Trip with Keeping Track
Sustainable Agriculture - 5 New Kids!
PAHCC"s Deep Roots Farm welcomes new members!
With the arrival of twins from mother goat Jolene and triplets from Dolly, our farm family has grown even larger. We're delighted to announce that all five kids are healthy, thriving, and ready to explore their new home at the farm.
