2025 School Climate & Connectedness Family Survey - Open Now!
The SCCS is a voluntary statewide survey taken by students grades 3-12, all school-based staff, and ASD families since 2006, developed by the American Institutes for Research (AIR) in partnership with Alaska Association of School Boards (AASB) and Panorama Education. It measures school climate, how connected students feel to adults and peers, social and emotional learning, and observed risk behaviors at school or school events.
ASD uses the data in strategic planning, evaluating programs, and improving community-school relationships both at the school and district level.
Research has shown that when students feel safe, connected, and engaged in their schools they are more successful learners and exhibit fewer risk behaviors. Please share your feedback in the survey below.

Library Updates
Battle of the Books
Over 40 students participated in Battle of the Books this year. Students in grades 3-5 learned the titles/authors for twelve books. Students practiced once a week to review the title and authors as well as answer specific questions for each book. Along the way, they played Battle of the Books basketball, soccer and Kahoot. This is a wonderful opportunity for our students who love to read. In December, the students took a quiz and the top four highest scores for each grade made the team. The teams competed at a city-wide competition in February. Our third-grade team showed incredible sportsmanship as they navigated their first competition against almost 60 schools. Our fourth-place team placed first and will represent Anchorage at the state competition at the end of February. Our fifth-grade team placed second in the 5/6 division. These students have worked very hard and were wonderful representatives of our school.
Thank you to the PTA for supporting the Battle of the Books program and purchasing books for student to use. Thank you to the team chaperones: Heather Benucci, Shayla Koerber, and Martha Tansik. Each team is required to have a chaperone, and these wonderful volunteers ensured our students were safe and enjoyed the day of competition. Thank to our principal, Mrs. Wood, for transporting students to the competition and her support of the Battle of the Books program.
Titles for the competition next year will be out this spring. Any student in grades 2-5 can participate in the Battle of the Books program – Happy Reading!
Valentines for Veterans
Thank you to all the students who continued the 30-year tradition at Rogers Park and made beautiful valentines that will be delivered to veterans across our state. Students hand wrote and decorated almost 400 cards. These messages of thanks are a wonderful community service project to recognize those who have served the nation. Thank you to the PTA for their support of Valentines for Veterans and thank you to Denise and Carly Flake for all their help to prepare materials for the students to use in making the valentines.

Happenings in Mr. Prather's HG 1/2 Class
Mr. Prather's class is exploring states of matter. In class students made observations placing solids, liquids, and semisolids in a 1 gallon jug. Then, students asked scientific questions that connected to one of the students' observations. Student scientists took their best guess at answering that question to formulate a hypothesis.
Last week students thought about an experiment that tests if their hypothesis explains their question with data and observations by changing only one thing in the experiment, we call this a controlled experiment with one variable. This week students will outline the steps and directions for that experiment. Everyone in class has different observations and questions, so the experiments will all be different.
The reason we took this approach is so that students work towards science standards not only by learning about science but doing scientific things and performing the steps of the scientific method to inquire about states of matter.
President's Day Holiday - February 17th - No School!
2025 Engineers Week UAA Student Competitions - February 22nd
As part of the National Engineers Week celebrations in Anchorage, the University of Alaska Anchorage College of Engineering and the E-Week Planning Committee are pleased to announce that the 2025 E-Week Student Competitions will be held on February 22, from 10:00 am to 3:00 pm, at the UAA Engineering & Industry Building (2900 Spirit Dr.).
This event is FREE and open to the public. The first 250 youth to arrive will also receive a free t-shirt!
The Student Competitions are a core E-Week tradition, each year bringing together hundreds of families and young people to participate in fun and challenging carnival-like games with an engineering theme. Students can attempt to design, build, and test the tallest tower, most buoyant boat, and more. In doing so, they will learn more about the engineering design process.
The Student Competitions are only possible thanks to the time and energy of volunteers from the engineering community. Each competition is presented by a different professional organization or company. The competitions this year are:
Tower Shaking and Breaking Competition – Presented by the American Society of Civil Engineers and the American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air-Conditioning Engineers
Newspaper Tower Competition – Presented by the Society of Petroleum Engineers
LEGO Long-o Competition – Presented by the Institute of Transportation Engineers
Paper Airplane Distance Competition – Presented by DOWL
Floatable Moatable Competition – Presented by the Society of American Military Engineers
Egg Drop Competition – Presented by the Society of Women Engineers
Marshmallow and Spaghetti Tower Competition – Presented by ConocoPhillips Alaska
Pre-registration RSVP: 2025 E-Week Student Competitions
While encouraged, pre-registration is not required to participate. Pre-registration is intended to help expedite the registration process the morning of the competitions.
Girls on the Run is Coming to Rogers Park in March
Girls on the Run is a 10-week program for girls in grades 3-5 that combines physical activity with valuable life skills. The program meets twice a week and uses fun, movement-based lessons to help girls:
- Build confidence and develop essential life skills
- Set and achieve goals, with the celebration of a 5K event at the end of the season
- Make a positive impact on their community
- Practice empathy, inclusion, and acceptance
Now, more than ever, girls need a program that helps them build strong relationships, express their emotions, and feel supported. Girls on the Run provides the tools they need to stand up for themselves and others while becoming confident leaders in their communities.
More information about Rogers Park Girls on the Run Team will be coming soon!
UAA Summer Reading Program for Students Pre-K - 10th Grade

PTA Update
Hello Rogers Park PTA Families,
Thanks again to our amazing and generous community for your support of the Glow on Ice Event last month. We will soon have information on the amount fundraised once we finalize our expenses. Thanks to the patience of those who have waited on t-shirt orders. We do hope to do another round of Wolf Pack shirt printing this school year! We are so appreciative of all of our donors and volunteers who keep our programs running smoothly and impact our school community. We want to shout out especially to the energetic Brittany Ford, our Volunteer Coordinator who has been instrumental to our recess ice-skating program and the numerous volunteers who tie skates, Kate Blank, our tireless treasurer and yearbook volunteer (you may have seen her snapping pics at our family events) and to our outstanding Science Fair Committee members Anjali Madeira, Kim Hays and Alison Kwan (who is also our fabulous web designer and tech support). We thrive because of a remarkable community of volunteers.
Here are some ways PTA is supporting our school this month and next:
- Purchasing a much-needed new cot for the Nurse's Office to provide a safe and comfortable environment for students to rest/recover/receive treatment.
- Providing a staff meal during Parent Teacher Conferences (PTC) for our very hardworking Rogers Park Staff.
- Implementing another round of "Sweets & Drinks" family-provided potluck for staff during PTC (this was a huge hit this fall - stay tuned for sign up info.)
- Hosting the Read Across America breakfast before school on Thursday, March 6th (details and volunteer/donation opportunities to be announced soon.)
- Facilitating a parent advocacy training with our VP-Legislative Liaison, Kim Hays, adjacent to our next membership meeting (note there is a potential meeting date/time change to accommodate this training, to be announced ASAP.)
- Supporting our young scientists with Science Fair project preparation and materials as they ready for the school-wide Science Fair on Thursday, March 20th.
- Hosting an evening family event in March, details TBD. If you are interested in volunteering or helping with this event or in any other capacity, please reach out via email to rogers.park.pta@gmail.com.
. We thank you for your continued generosity and support of our PTA and school.
