GRANTS
The application is now open for YSA's 15th Annual Sodexo Stop Hunger Foundation Youth Grants program! With the generous support of the Sodexo Stop Hunger Foundation, we are again offering project grants to youth changemakers - ages 5 to 25 - to lead awareness, direct service, advocacy, and philanthropic projects that focus on ending childhood hunger in their communities.
Why focus on childhood hunger? According to the latest estimates, nearly 1 in 5 children (19.2%) in the US is living at risk of hunger; that means 13.8 million children live in food-insecure households in the wealthiest country in the world.
This year, youth may apply for grants of $500 for projects that engage at least 50 other youth as volunteers (project planners, project leaders, and day-of volunteers) in activities designed to help end childhood hunger in their community.
What are we looking for?
Proposed projects must be youth-led and focus on addressing childhood hunger;
Projects must take place during the Sodexo Servathon (April 1 – May 31, 2025), with some activity during Youth Service Month (April 11 – May 11, 2025) and/or Global Youth Service Day (April 25-27, 2025) strongly encouraged;
Projects may take place in schools, colleges/universities, afterschool programs, youth organizations, nonprofits, or faith-based organizations;
Youth applicants should engage youth not typically asked to serve as volunteers;
Youth applicants must live in the United States, and activities must benefit children and families in the United States.

Stuffed Snickerdoodles
Ingredients:
1/2 cup = 3 Tbsp butter, softened
3/4 cup = 2 Tbsp granulated sugar
1/2 tsp baking soda
1/2 tsp cream of tartar
1 egg
1/2 tsp vanilla
1 1/2 cups = 1 Tbsp all-purpose flour
1/3 cup packed brown sugar
1 Tbsp = 1 1/2 tsp ground cinnamon
Directions:
1. In a large mixing bowl beat the 1/2 cup butter with a mixer on medium to high 30 seconds. Add the 3/4 cup granulated sugar, baking soda and cream of tartar. Beat until combined, scraping sides of bowl occasionally. Beat in egg and vanilla until combined. Beat in the 1 1/2 cups flour. If necessary, chill dough until easy to handle, 30 minutes.
2. For filling, in a medium bowl combine the 3 Tbsp butter and 1 Tbsp flour, brown sugar, 1 Tbsp cinnamon and 1/8 tsp. salt. Spoon mixture onto a waxed paper-lined plate and pat into a 4x2 inch rectangle. Cut rectangle into 15 equal pieces and roll into balls. Freeze until just firm, 10 minutes.
3. In a shallow dish stir together 2 Tbsp granulated sugar and 1 1/2 tsp cinnamon. Shape the cookie dough into 15 1 1/2 inch balls (about 2 Tbsp each). Flatten each ball to form a 2-2 1/2 inch circle. Place ball of filling in the center of each. Wrap dough completely around filling and roll into balls again. Roll in cinnamon-sugar mixture to coat. Chill dough balls 30 minutes.
4. Preheat oven to 375 degrees F. Place balls 2 inches apart on ungreased cookie sheets. Bake until edges are set and bottoms are light brown, 10-11 minutes. Cool on cookie sheets 3 minutes. Transfer to a wire rack; cool. Makes 15 cookies.
Store in an airtight container at room temperature up to 3 days or freeze up to 1 month.
Winter Weather Reminder
With winter weather upon us, it's a great time for District 191 families to make sure their contact information is up-to-date. Families can access their ParentVUE account to see if their information is accurate. Or, they can call their student's school to update their information.
Remember that on the first "snow day" or when school is canceled unexpectedly, there will be no regular classes for all District 191 students, including students enrolled in One91 Virtual Academy, and programs will be canceled.
After the first snow day, snow days (buildings and programs closed) will be Remote Learning days for students.
To learn about District 191's winter weather guidelines and how we communicate to families when weather affects the school day, visit our Winter Weather Guidelines page! https://www.isd191.org/families/winter-weather

Early Childhood Screening
If you have a 3- or 4-year-old at home, it's time to set up an early childhood screening
Screening is an early look at a child's development. Screening can provide peace of mind that your child is developing normally, and if needed, allows health and developmental concerns to be addressed at least one to two years before a child enters kindergarten.
Early childhood screening checks:
- Fine and gross motor skills
Vision and hearing
Speech and language development
Height and weight
Cognitive and social development
Immunizations
The state of Minnesota requires health and developmental screening for every child before they start kindergarten. Burnsville-Eagan-Savage School District 191 offers this service at no cost. Schedule your screening today.
