South Elementary Family Newsletter
Volume #1 September 2024
Message from the Principals
Dear South Families,
Happy October to everyone! This fall weather has been nice, with sunny days and cooler nights. Everyone has made the transition into school and have settled nicely into a routine. We have some fun seasonal events coming up this month....one is Trunk or Treat and another is the SBEC Fun Run. Please see the Important Dates section for details. We hope to see you there!
All students just finished universal benchmark testing. The information we get from these assessments gives us a baseline to measure growth over the year and also indicates strengths and weaknesses in ELA and Math. The first week in October, we will have Data Team Meetings to establish intervention groups, also called WIN, What I Need, or RTI, Response to Intervention. These groups meet daily for a half hour and students are grouped together based on their needs.
Our Elementary Vision of the Graduate "PRIDE" traits of: Perseverance, Respect; Independence; Diversity/Equity/Inclusion; and Empathy are discussed each morning on announcements and reinforced in classrooms. During October, our focus will be on: disagreeing appropriately; being kind to others; appropriately managing feelings; and, resisting negative peer pressure. If any of these topics come up at home, please connect them to our monthly traits at school. Working together, we are able to show students how the lessons connect to real life situations.
As some of you may know, one of our very own Cricket Family members has been dealing with a medical emergency. They are in need of our support. Mrs. Teasdale, Grade 2 Teacher, is out on leave while her husband is recovering from a massive heart attack. Please send your positive thoughts and healing energy to them and/or use this Go Fund Me link if you would like to donate to help the Teasdale Family.
With Much Aloha,
Steph Brown and Rebecca Hurley

KINDERGARTEN
GRADE 1
Our first graders are becoming readers and writers, mathematicians and scientists and we can't wait to see where this year takes them!
GRADE 2
Our first month of school sure has been busy! At this point, we have adjusted to our new surroundings as we embrace the new curriculum for 2nd Grade. We have finished up our initial benchmark testing… Great work 2nd Graders! In class, our read alouds have led us to discuss what is important about being a family and what it means to fit or belong to some place. Our next stop is Memory Stories! In reading, we have set up our reading time routines including having our own book bins, and reading response journals. We have also talked about what it means to be a “Just Right” book. We will continue this into literary analysis with thinking and talking about books. In phonics, we have finished up our lesson on initial blends, final blends, consonant digraphs, and the floss rule. Up next, we will begin learning to read and spell words with phonograms. In writing, we have begun to look at the Four Common Types of Writing: informational writing, opinion writing, and narrative writing, which includes both personal experiences as well as character/problem/solution stories. We will continue to look at writing genres over the next few weeks, both annotating them and then writing our own! In math, we will begin Unit 2: Setting Foundations for Place Value & Measurement. These activities include counting & modeling two and three digit numbers, measuring with tens, adding and subtracting on the number line, and thinking in 2s. In social studies, we have started our study of map skills: learning how to tell directions on a map. Our first science mystery will focus on where we end up if we float down a river and why there is sand at the beach!
GRADE 3
Dear 3rd Grade Families,
Happy fall! We hope this newsletter finds you well and excited about the wonderful progress our students have made so far this school year. We have some exciting updates and important information to share with you.
Math: We will continue delving into data and graphing, as well as exploring the foundations of multiplication. Encourage your child to practice their multiplication facts at home to strengthen their skills.
Reading: Guided Reading is up and running! Our Reading Workshop has taken flight but still needs practice with all of the moving parts. We will also introduce vocabulary-rich literature and continue exploring our identities as readers.
Writing: Our focus in writing this month will be on narrative writing. We will be using graphic organizers to help organize our thoughts and create engaging personal narrative experiences before moving onto character/problem/solution narratives. Encourage your child to share their google drive with you so that you can enjoy progress.
Science: We are excited to dive into the fascinating world of climate and extreme weather this month. Students will learn about weather patterns, climate zones, and the impacts of extreme weather events. Encourage your child to observe and discuss weather changes in their surroundings.
Social Studies: We will begin our exploration of our country's government, learning about the different branches and their functions. This will help foster a deeper understanding of our nation's democratic system.
Tips for Student Success:
Encourage Daily Reading: Set aside dedicated time for your child to read their favorite books or explore new genres. Reading at home plays a vital role in improving comprehension and expanding vocabulary.
Establish a Homework Routine: Help your child establish a consistent homework routine to ensure they complete assignments on time and develop good study habits.
Foster a Growth Mindset: Encourage your child to embrace challenges and view mistakes as opportunities for growth. Remind them that perseverance and effort lead to success.
In closing, we are grateful for your continuous support and involvement in your child's education. Together, let's make this month a memorable one, filled with growth, knowledge, and joy.
Warm regards,
Ms. Francoeur
Mrs. Oliveira
Grade 4
September blew by! Students have classroom rituals and routines down and we are diving deep into learning!
In ELA, the fourth grade is finishing up our writing launch. We have been analyzing and annotating writing, noticing the features of narrative, informational, and opinion writing. In reading, students have been noticing the features of nonfiction and fiction texts. They have used evidence to support their thinking of the text. In phonics, we are beginning to identify syllables, focused on closed and open syllables. Finally, in Social Studies we are discovering natural and manmade landmarks in the United States. We are also working on our map skills and finding where we live on the map.
In Math, our fourth graders have been busy learning about factors and factor pairs. They have also been focusing on learning about prime and composite numbers, and how many factors each can have. In Number Corner, they have been doing a lot of measuring and converting measurements from inches to feet to yards. We have also been looking at the correlation of Ancient Egyptian Numbers and how they correspond to our modern day numerals.
In Science, they have been learning about energy and how it is stored in objects, and what happens when that energy is transferred. They are excited to build mock bumper coaster tracks that show the transfer of energy.
Grade 5
September blew by! Students have classroom rituals and routines down and we are diving deep into learning!
In ELA, the fifth grade is finishing up our writing launch. Finally, in Social Studies we have traveled back in time to the colonial period. Students are learning about the labor that took place then, including indentured servants and slaves.
In Math, our fifth graders have been working on measuring the volume of rectangular prisms and composite rectangular prisms. They have learned about dimensions, and how to solve using multiple strategies. They have been able to utilize a couple of our new workplaces and think about the factors of numbers, and use a plan of action to get the higher score using different prime and composite numbers. In Number Corner, they have been doing a lot of fraction and decimal equivalents.
In Science, we have been talking about all of the water in the world, and using visuals to show the vast differences between how much of each water (salt water, fresh water, and frozen fresh water) there is on the planet. These visuals were really eye opening!
