Starting on Tuesday (9/10) Deputy Custer (Our New School’s Resource Officer) will be stationed at that intersection on Tuesday and Thursday mornings (rain or shine) from 7:55-8:10am to help students cross Route 33 safely. We are planning to continue this until the weather turns in mid/late October.
September Is Attendance Awareness Month
As we continue to work together toward academic excellence, I want to emphasize the importance of consistent attendance in ensuring student success.
We know that regular attendance is one of the most critical factors in achieving academic growth. Every day counts, and each day missed can have a cumulative impact on your child’s learning. This year, we are encouraging all of our students to embrace the challenge of “Strive for Less Than"5"—
to not be out of school for more than five days throughout the entire year.
September is National School Attendance Awareness Month, and I have a special challenge for students and staff who don't miss any days in September. Please watch my video for more information!
Sincerely,
Larry Shifflett, Ed.D.
Division Superintendent
Super Science Stuff
Thanks to your help, our science Standards of Learning pass rate jumped a whopping 13% last year! In fact, we made double-digit gains in several state testing categories because of the fantastic teachers we have here! Once again this year, we’ll continue to focus on creating little scientists at Mountain View because… it’s really fun to make a mess! 🙂

September - Scientific Method & Engineering Practices
Sept. Week 1: Scientific Method & Investigation: Make the Biggest Bubble!
Observation: When I add soap and water, I get bubbles!
Question: Can I make the bubbles larger?
Create-Your-Own-Hypothesis!
IF _________ THEN _________ .
Materials (for the bubble mixture):
6 cups distilled or purified water
1/2 cup cornstarch
1 Tbs. baking powder
1 Tbs. Corn Syrup
1/2 cup (120 ml) blue Dawn dish soap. (I'd prefer not to specificy a brand, but the type of detergent can literally make or break your giant bubbles.) Dawn Ultra-not concentrated, or Dawn Pro are also highly recommended. You can also use Joy detergent
Materials (for the wand):
54 inches of string
2 sticks
1 metal washer
Making the Wand:
Tie the string to 1 end of the stick
Put the washer on the string and tie the string to the 2nd stick at about 36 inches. Tie the remaining 18 inches to the 1st stick to create a triangle
Experiment:
Mix water and cornstarch
Add remaining ingredients and mix well (DON’T whip up tiny bubbles!)
Use immediately OR stir again and use again after an hour or so.
Holding sticks together, submerge the string completely in the solution.
Pull the sticks apart to create a triangle string bubble, step back to create the bubble and close it by putting the sticks together.
Data: Take a picture of your experiment results and submit to your teacher on SeeSaw!
Conclusion: Were your hypothesis statements correct? Why? If you could do the experiment again, what would you like to change?

International Dot Day (9/13)
We will celebrate on Friday, September 13th. Everyone is welcome to wear dots!
https://www.internationaldotday.org/
International Dot Day, a global celebration of creativity, courage and collaboration, began when teacher Terry Shay introduced his classroom to Peter H. Reynolds’ book The Dot on September 15, 2009.
The Dot is the story of a caring teacher who dares a doubting student to trust in her own abilities by being brave enough to “make her mark”. What begins with a small dot on a piece of paper becomes a breakthrough in confidence and courage, igniting a journey of self-discovery and sharing, which has gone on to inspire countless children and adults around the globe.
Each year on International Dot Day – with the help of people just like you – the inspiration continues. What started as a story in the pages of a book is transforming teaching and learning around the world as people of all ages re-discover the power and potential of creativity in all they do.
PE Help Needed
Do you know a lot about bicycles? Are you handy with regular routine bike maintenance, such as inflating tires, replacing tubes, checking brakes, and oiling chains/cogs? MVES has a fleet of bicycles which are in need of maintenance beyond the abilities of our PE teachers. We'd like to ride bikes in PE class this fall but are in need of help getting them "riding ready".
If you have the skills to help us, please reach out to Ms. Botkin or Mr. Harris by calling the school at 540-438-1965, sending them a message through Seesaw, or by emailing them at fbotkin@rockingham.k12.va.us or charris@rockingham.k12.va.us
