May Cultural Awareness and Recognitions: Asian Pacific American Heritage Month, Haitian Heritage Month, Jewish American Heritage Month, Speech and Hearing Awareness Month
In the Snohomish School District and community, we honor and recognize our diversity. Please join us this May as we acknowledge Asian Pacific American Heritage Month, Haitian Heritage Month, Jewish American Heritage Month, and Speech and Hearing Awareness Month. As a reminder, though these months may be designated as times for specific recognition, we encourage honor and recognition of our culture and diversity throughout the year.
Asian Pacific American Heritage Month was first nationally recognized in 1992. In June of 1978, a resolution was proposed to proclaim a week including the 7th and 10th of May as Asian/Pacific Heritage Week. The timeframe was selected to honor the first Japanese immigration to the United States on May 7, 1843 and the anniversary of the completion of the transcontinental railroad on May 10, 1869. Most of the railroad tracks were laid by Chinese immigrants. Asian/Pacific encompasses all the Asian continent and the Pacific islands of Melanesia (New Guinea, New Caledonia, Vanuatu, Fiji and the Solomon Islands), Micronesia (Marianas, Guam, Wake Island, Palau, Marshall Islands, Kiribati, Nauru and the Federated States of Micronesia) and Polynesia (New Zealand, Hawaiian Islands, Rotuma, Midway Islands, Samoa, American Samoa, Tonga, Tuvalu, Cook Islands, French Polynesia and Easter Island).
Haitian Heritage Month is an opportunity for individuals to celebrate the culture and learn the traditions of Haiti and its people. The celebration is an expansion of the Haitian Flag Day on May 18, a major patriotic day celebration in Haiti and the Diaspora created to encourage patriotism.
Jewish American Heritage Month has been celebrated since 2006 after an initial proclamation from President George W. Bush. The announcement was the crowning achievement in an effort by the Jewish Museum of Florida and South Florida Jewish community leaders that resulted in resolutions introduced by Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz of Florida and Sen. Arlen Specter of Pennsylvania urged the president to proclaim a month that would recognize the more than 350-year history of Jewish contributions to American culture.
Speech and Hearing Awareness Month was founded in 1927 by the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA). According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the annual event serves to raise awareness about hearing problems and communication disorders.
For more information on recognitions throughout the year please check out this link from pta.org.

Health news
7th grade Tdap booster shot requirement
All students entering 7th grade must have a Tdap shot before they can start school in September 2024.
For students in 7th grade, the Tdap vaccine must be given at or after age 10 to be accepted for school entry. If your child is in 6th grade and already received this booster, their immunizations are complete. The middle school nurse may need medical verification when this vaccine was given. If your child receives this booster over the summer, please bring the record to the nurse at registration in August 2024. It is good to keep a copy of immunizations for your records.
Please note, the Tdap shot is different from the Td shot. If your child receives the Td shot, that vaccination is not in compliance with Washington immunization requirements, and they will need to receive the Tdap shot, as well, before the first day of school.
- Please click here for additional information about state vaccine requirements.
- Please click here to access the Washington State Department of Health Personal/Religious Certificate of Exemption.
Please remember, these immunizations are not just a good idea – they are required by Washington state law for school attendance.
State immunization requirements
Make sure your child's immunizations are up to date! It is important to make sure your child goes to their regularly scheduled wellness appointments, which often include immunizations. The summer months are a great time to get your child caught up with immunization requirements before the 2024-2025 school year. Schedule your appointments early, as health care providers’ schedules quickly fill up in August and September. Make sure to turn in your updated immunization paperwork to the school health room/nurse by the first day of school on Wednesday, September 6.
This reminder is especially important if your child is transitioning to preschool, kindergarten, or 7th grade, as each of these grades has additional immunization requirements. Please click here for additional information about state vaccine requirements.
Every student enrolled/registered in school or childcare in the state of Washington must have medically verified up-to-date immunization records on file with the school in which they are enrolled/registering before the first day of school, 2023-2024. Medically verified immunization records include one or more of the following:
- A Certificate of Immunization Status (CIS) printed from the Immunization Information System (IIS)
- A physical copy of the CIS form with a healthcare provider signature
- A physical copy of the CIS form with accompanying medical immunization records from a healthcare provider verified and signed by school staff
- A CIS printed from MyIR at https://myirmobile.com/signin/.

Kindergarten and new student registration
New district students

Transition to Kindergarten
Do you have a preschool-age child who will be eligible for kindergarten after September 2025 (Note: To enter kindergarten, a child must be 5-years-old on or before August 31)? Has it been a challenge for you to access a preschool program for your child? If so, the Snohomish School District’s Transition to Kindergarten pre-K program may be the place for your child to learn and grow! Our Transition to Kindergarten program:
- Serves 4- to 5-year-old students
- Is a state-funded, free Monday through Friday full-day preschool program
- Serves children and families who demonstrate a need through the Transition to Kindergarten pre-K application and screening process
To learn more about Transition to Kindergarten, please fill out the district Preschool Inquiry Form at www.sno.wednet.edu/preschoolform. Upon completion of the form, a district enrollment specialist will be in touch! Screenings and placements typically will occur in March, June, and August. Learn more about all of the district’s early learning programs at www.sno.wednet.edu/earlylearning.
ECEAP and Developmental Preschool
In addition to Transition to Kindergarten, we offer other early learning programs including Early Childhood Education and Assistance Program (ECEAP) and Developmental Preschool.
Snohomish School District's Early Childhood Education and Assistance Program (ECEAP) is a state-funded, free preschool for limited-income families. ECEAP is designed to provide a comprehensive early childhood program for preschool children and their families. If your child resides within the Snohomish School District boundaries or is highly mobile, such as migrant or homeless, they may be eligible for the ECEAP program. Developmental Preschool serves 3- to 5-year-old students who meet eligibility requirements for special education services.
To learn more about ECEAP and Developmental Preschool, please fill out the district Preschool Inquiry Form at www.sno.wednet.edu/preschoolform. Learn more about all of the district’s early learning programs at www.sno.wednet.edu/earlylearning.
Variances/Choice Transfers
The Snohomish School District is currently reviewing variance/Choice Transfer requests for those families interested in their child(ren) attending a school that is not their neighborhood school for the 2024-2025 school year. If a family wishes for their child(ren) to attend a Snohomish School District school that does not serve the area of his/her residence, parents/guardians must request a variance. Variances are granted for one full school year, or until the end of the current school year. Families wishing to remain at their non-residential school must remember to apply for a variance each year. For more information on variance/Choice Transfer requests, please visit www.sno.wednet.edu/variance.
