"Say Hello" Lunch
Today we had our 1st "Say Hello" lunch of the year where different grade levels eat together so that we can all make friends with students who are younger or older. This is part of what makes the culture at SJG so inviting. The students had a wonderful time at lunch today!
1st Ever HSA Welcome Back To School Picnic
Thank you to the HSA for the Welcome Back To School Picnic. It was a great event with parents catching up with one another and students having fun without electronics! The pizza was delicious, the music was great, and the games were so much fun!
What Are We Learning At SJG?
How often do your children come home and give you the answers of "SCHOOL WAS FINE" or "NOTHING" when you ask them what they did today? We recognize that and now our students are informing all the parents about what they are learning by completing this section of the newsletter! Each week, different students from each class will collaborate and put together what they are excited to share about their learning. Below is a picture of our reporters for the week!
Kindergarten (Zachary, Johnny, Lina): We have been learning about counting and numbers up to 10 in Math. Our teachers have been reading us stories and we are learning to read all by ourselves. We have also been learning about taller / shorter or bigger / smaller.
1st Grade (Seoyeon, Klea, Dash): In First Grade we are learning the partners of 10, take away, and plus. We are learning how to read harder books and what types of books we should be reading. In Social Studies, we are learning about our community and why there are rules in our community.
2nd Grade (Olivia, Lorenzo): Second grade has been learning about our clock partners that we learn with. In Math, we have been learning about doubles plus 1 facts and making a 10. We are writing about stories that we remember from our life. In Social Studies we have been doing "Me On The Map" which helps us learn about where we live from town to state to country. We have the most fun on Fridays when we have "Fun Friday" when we get to play games with our friends!
3rd Grade (Alaina, Nicolas, Ben): We have been busy in 3rd grade learning about rounding in Math. We are learning about transitions (moving in the classroom). In Social Studies we have been working with maps. We have been doing summer writing and reading the novel "The Storm". "The Storm" is about a cat who runs a lighthouse and she saves a dog who is a sailor. We are two chapters into the book and it is fun!
4th Grade (Julia, Victor, Lukas): In grade 4 Math we are learning rounding to the nearest ten, hundred, thousands, ten thousands, and hundred thousands as well as comparing numbers. For Reading we are reading Frindle and are answering questions using text evidence. In Social Studies we are learning about maps and regions. We are creating slide shows of the different regions. We also used bar graphs in science when learning about surface tension.
5th Grade (Grace, Leilani): In Math we have been working on volume and Cubic units. For Science, we have been learning about matter. Language Arts has been fun because we have been reading "Wonder" and starting our book clubs. We have also been reading "Fish In A Tree". We have also been "Persevering Like A Panther" where we are completing academic puzzles.
Phys Ed (MyKenna): In Grade 2 Gym, we are learning to how to throw and catch. We also get to play "Pac Man" which is a game of tag involving three taggers. When you are tagged, you have to do jumping jacks and then you can come back in.
Art (Kaia): In Grade 2 Art, we are coloring a picture with flowers on them. We are shown how to do our project and we watch a video about what we are doing. During free time, we get to free draw and color.
Music (Sean): We started playing taps on our recorders and we are learning about sea chantees, which are songs about the sea that sailors sing. We are also playing a drumming pattern while listening to the song Wellerman.
Media (Camila): In Library, we have been working on slides for our buddies (kindergarten). Our slide shows are about library rules and how to take care of books. It is fun to help others!
ESL (Eylan): We are working on theme in reading and narrative writing. We are learning how to find the theme and how to improve our writing.

DISTRICT NEWS
New Elementary School Parent / Teacher Conference Dates and Times!
The district is going to pilot a new schedule for elementary school conferences for the 2024 school year. In coordination with community input as well as planning with the principals and staff, we have generated a schedule that we believe will be more efficient and effective.
Conferences will be held on Wednesday 11/13 from 3:00-4:30, and then on Thursday 11/14 from 1:30-7:30. Following conferences we send a survey to gather feedback from families on their thoughts on the new schedule, which should help us determine if to move forward with the new times or continue to work towards finding a more effective plan.

NURSE'S CORNER
Staying Healthy This Time of Year!!!
We are at the beginning of cold and flu season. We can also see other childhood ailments.
These can include Covid, Strep throat, Coxsackie viruses and stomach viruses. There are
common things we can all do to lessen the spread of such illnesses. These include:
1. Proper hand washing. Reinforce to your children how and when to wash hands. Hand
washing is the number one way to protect yourself and others against all of
these childhood illnesses.
2. Remind children to cover their mouths and noses with a tissue or sleeve
when sneezing or coughing. Throw tissues away after each use. This is always
reinforced here at school.
3. The flu and covid vaccines are recommended and available.
4. Keep sick children home. If your child is ill, PLEASE keep them home for 24hrs -
symptom free. This means symptom free without medication like Tylenol or Advil.
Symptoms include temperature 100.4 or above, vomiting, diarrhea, consistent
coughing, runny nose, sore throat, new skin outbreaks or rashes etc. I will only have
to send them home if the symptoms continue at school. Most illnesses, if
contagious, are spread right before and right after the illness appears. Staying
home while symptoms persist can lessen the spread to others. It also protects your
child from picking up secondary illnesses while their immune system is already
working hard.
5. Have children get plenty of rest and eat a nutritious diet. While these are
important every day, it is even more important when children are not feeling well.
6. When your child is ill, please call or email the main office by 8:15am to report
an absence. The attendance line is available 24/7. I also ask that you let the
school know why your child is absent and be as specific as possible. If you
take your child to the doctor it is helpful to bring documentation of the illness
from the doctor. Let us know if your child has a specific illness.
