LMS and LHS Parents: "What Are Benchmarks?"
You may have heard your student talk about having to take a "benchmark" during their ELA or math class. What are these benchmarks, anyway, and how are they different than anything else my student does in class?
Benchmarks are given 4 times per year, at the end of every marking period. These assessments are designed to be just like the NJ Student Learning Assessment (NJSLA), the state test that students take every year in grades 3-8 and at the end of certain courses in high school.
The purpose of the benchmark is to let teachers collect data on student mastery of the standards-- the things students need to know and be able to do in each course. Teachers collect benchmark data and reflect in writing on it each marking period, then use that data to help students succeed.
Benchmarks are a very important part of your student's learning. Please encourage your student to take them seriously! Know that teachers are looking at how well students perform, so it's essential that students try their best even when the questions are challenging.
We have activated the parent portal in Linkit, our system where students take their benchmarks. This will let you see how well your student is performing and will let you talk to them about how they can improve!
Did you know?
Our curriculum maps are available online! These are the curriculum documents that our teachers use to guide their pacing and instruction for each unit. You can take a look and see more about what your students are learning at each grade level.
