January 2025!
LP BROWN NEWS!
Strive for Fewer Than 5 Days Absent!
Welcome back to the 2025 school year at LP Brown Elementary School! I am so excited to see all of our smiling faces. We are going to have so much fun in the new year!
Please help us with school attendance:
- Use bus routes when available. Buses will almost always get kids here on time in the morning
- For parent drop-off, have kids at school at 7:45 AM
- Schedule appointments outside of the school day when possible
- Unless kids are vomiting or have a fever, please send them to school
- Please schedule vacations during regularly scheduled breaks from school
If I can be of assistance in any way as it relates to getting kids to school on-time, please don't hesitate to reach out.
No School and Early Release Days in January
- Early Release January 8th, 15th, 22nd, 29th. School Dismisses at 1:25 PM
- No School January 20th in recognition of MLK Jr.
- Half Day for Grading on January 31st. Dismissal at 11:05 AM
Snack Donations
We are always super thankful for any and all snack donations during the school year. I know that teachers are asking for snacks through their own newsletters. I have designed a snack purchasing option that I hope will be helpful in the purchasing process.
Here is a link to our Amazon Business Account and a snack list that I have created for us to use.
When you purchase items off of this list, the items will ship directly to the school. No more going out and shopping for snacks. Purchase from the comfort of your home and know that everything will show up at the school. You can include a note in the purchase if you would like the snacks to go to a specific classroom. If you do not indicate a specific classroom, the snacks will go into our general distribution center for all students to enjoy.
Thank you for your help with snacks. Let me know if you have any feedback on the new Amazon shopping list. This is the first time we are using it.
STAR Night (Sit Together and Read)
Join us for our annual STAR Night on Thursday, January 23rd at 5:30 PM.
- Dinner is served for all in attendance
- South Sound Reading Foundation with Book Give Aways
- Timberland Regional Library for Library Cards and online programs
- Guest Readers (Police Officers and Fire Fighters)
This night is always so well-attended by our families and is such a great way to learn about literacy development and connect with families in our community.
Martin Luther King Jr. Regognition
We are excited to announce two special assemblies to honor the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. The first assembly with students in TK - 2nd grades will take place on on Tuesday, January 21st at 1:40 PM. The second assembly for students in 3rd - 5th grades will take place on Wednesday, January 22nd at 12:40 PM. These events will celebrate Dr. King's message of equality, peace, and perseverance.
Our students will participate in meaningful activities, including speeches, reflections, and songs that highlight the importance of kindness and community. Parents and families are welcome to join us as we come together to honor the profound impact Dr. King has had on our nation.
Day of Science!
On January 28th, the Seattle Pacific Science Center will be at LP Brown to put on a full day of hands on science learning for our students!!! The day will include an all school assembly in the morning, scheduled workshops in all of the classrooms, and an exhibit tour at some other point during the day. I will need volunteers to help with the exhibits. I will send a sign-up schedule in the next week.
A Couple Reminders
Here are a couple of reminders as we get set to start school fresh in the new year:
- Kids should not bring toys to school. Thank you for your help with this.
- Talk to students about keeping cell phones and smart watches silenced and in backpacks during the school day.
- For birthdays, please do not bring cupcakes or other sweet treats to the school. We will find other ways to celebrate our students without sweets. With 330 kids, that is a LOT of cupcakes if everyone brings them. Please work with your teacher to find acceptable alternatives if you want to send something in.
Olympia Schools Supportive Education Council
Do you have a student receiving support through an IEP or 504 plan? Please join the Olympia Schools Supportive Education Council (OSSEC) throughout the school year for resources, community building, and a welcoming space to share ideas!
OSSEC is similar to a PTA/PTO designed for families, students, and staff supporting OSD students with disabilities from birth through post-high school programs, but without any fundraising or volunteering requirements usually associated with a PTO. The group has planned a mix of social events and informative meetings to create community, advocate for our students, and share resources!
Save the date for the next virtual OSSEC meeting on Wednesday, January 15th, 2025 at 6pm! Our guest speaker will be Helen Cadart, a special education advocate from the SEALK12 organization. Helen will be doing a presentation on navigating the special education system to get the best outcomes for students and families. We hope to see you there!
Please email olyssec@gmail.com with any questions, follow us on Facebook, and join our email list here to get meeting reminders and zoom links.
PTO NEWS!
PTO Meeting
L.P. Brown's next open PTO meeting is January 8th at 6pm in the library. We will be voting on amendments to our bylaws. Please join us and have a voice in the proposed changes. All are welcome to attend.
Spirit Wear at STAR Night
As you probably read above, STAR Night is on Thursday, January 23rd this year. One of the amazing events at STAR Night this year will be unveiling our new cricut printing machine to make our own LP Brown Spirit Wear. Bring your own t-shirt and get it printed with our logo for $5. We will also have shirts on hand for purchase at the event. Shirts can be purchased and printed for $10.
Boosterthon Already?
Booster-a-thon kickoff is February 14th and the Glow Run (which will happen inside this year in the gym and cafeteria) is February 27th so mark those calendars. This will be a really important way to donate to our school and help provide the operating funds we need to succeed in supporting our students.
What is that Tree Machine?
The Tree Machine located in front of the school is a dropbox for gently used shoes and clothing donations. We receive quarterly payments based on the weight of clothes and shoes collected and USAGAIN will also plant a tree for every full bin! This is a great way to fundraise for our students so clean out those closets and drop off your donations at L.P. Brown! Clothes, shoes and accessories only please! No furniture or household items will be accepted.
Chuck E Cheese Fundraiser
The Chuck E Cheese Fundraiser is January 31st! It is an all day event now since it's a half day at school. What a fun way to celebrate the end of the semester! All enrolled students will receive 10 free games just for showing up and L.P. Brown will receive 20% of all sales that day, no need to even mention the fundraiser! Invite all your friends and family and spread the word!
MOD Pizza Fundraiser Results!
Thank you to everyone who participated with the MOD Pizza fundraiser. As a result of our collective efforts, we raised $128 for our school!
