Principal Note
As we wrap up our first full week in October and approach 20% of the school year, many fall activities, athletics, and programs are coming to a close, while the next season is just beginning. For the 2024-2025 school year, the Jr./Sr. High is focused on four key goals that guide our daily efforts:
- Reduce the number of chronically absent students by one-third, from 28% to 18%.
- Achieve 100% proficiency in ELA on the ISASP test for all 7th-9th graders.
- Ensure that 100% of 7th-12th grade students are engaged in an activity, club, or sport.
- Ensure that every student completes at least one college credit, earns an industry-recognized credential, or participates in work-based learning by graduation.
These goals shape our vision and drive the mission behind everything we do. So far, we've seen a significant increase in the number of students participating in afterschool activities. Thanks to the “Beyond the Bell Grant” and growing involvement in athletics, 67% of our students are currently engaged in an activity, club, or sport. With winter sports just around the corner, we expect to reach 85% participation before winter break.
We're also seeing early signs of success in reducing chronic absenteeism with improved daily attendance. Our counseling team has been working diligently to align our course offerings with career clusters, helping students explore pathways for college and career readiness. Our goal is for all juniors and seniors to experience career and college courses tailored to their personal post-secondary plans.
This past month, we completed our fall MAP (Measures of Academic Progress) testing. The formative data gives us valuable insight into overall student growth, providing feedback on curriculum and instruction, while helping us identify students who need additional support or enrichment. As we move into October, our student services team will become even more targeted in offering that support, ensuring every student has what they need to succeed.
On another note, there has been a lot of discussion statewide and nationally about the use of cell phones in schools. At our October board meeting, we’ll be discussing this topic, and I’m eager to hear from parents. Our staff and students have shared their feedback—now it's your turn. Please take a moment to complete the survey: Cell Phone Survey.
As always, feel free to reach out with any questions, concerns, or suggestions. Lastly, keep an eye out for more details about conferences on November 7th and 14th, as we’re trying something new this year at the Jr./Sr. High.
