What Does a Student Support Advocate (SSA) Do?
Some of the things I do has a SSA at Cascade HS are:
- SSA’s help to connect students and families to community resources such as (but not limited to): mental health providers (therapists), food assistance, housing assistance, clothing assistance, basic needs assistance, financial assistance, backpacks, transportation assistance, etc.…
- SSA’s offer a listening ear to students that need support during the school day.
- SSA’s work with students and their families that have housing insecurity or that are homeless (KIT). SSAs are the building KIT and Foster Care point person.
- SSA’s work with students that have attendance and tardy concerns to help reduce the number of absences/tardies and work to decrease or eliminate barriers that are leading to attendance/tardy problems.
- SSA’s assist with de-escalation/resets, conflict resolution/restorative meeting/mediation and provide a safe place to calm down during the school day.
- SSA’s assist with Tier II and Tier III interventions for our students.
- Maintain a FREE clothing and hygiene closet. Let your student know they can see me in the counseling office, or if you know they would be too shy to see me out themselves, send me an email and I'll reach out to them.
Thank you!
