Principally Speaking
To Winthrop Families,
Today, our playground routines took a bit of a detour due to much-needed maintenance of our drains and sewers. With sections of the playground temporarily off-limits, students had to make do with the swings, quiet garden, and soccer field. What a joy it was to witness their creativity in action! From fifth graders rekindling their love for the swings to spontaneous “who can do the best split” contests, the playground buzzed with energy. One group even created an imaginary gaga pit, despite its invisible walls, while others formed new games with their own sets of rules on the soccer field.
This day served as a wonderful reminder of the importance of unstructured play in childhood. In the crisp fall air, our students demonstrated not only their adaptability but also the value of imaginative, self-directed fun. Unstructured play allows children to experiment, problem-solve, and engage with each other in ways that structured activities sometimes miss. We’re grateful for their flexibility and for this beautiful fall day that brought out their creative spirits!
I’m also including some pictures and a short video of our ever-growing lost and found this week. As the days get chillier, it’s the perfect time to take a look—there may be a forgotten sweatshirt or jacket that’s needed to keep your child warm. With the changing weather, it’s a great idea to send students to school with layers. Mornings can be brisk, but afternoons often warm up, so having a sweater or light jacket handy ensures they're comfortable throughout the day. Let’s keep our kids cozy and ready to enjoy all that fall has to offer!
Stay warm,
Amy
