Dear Mary M. Knight Families and Community Members,

As we enter December, I want to highlight some important updates and upcoming events that will help us finish 2024 strong.

With winter weather approaching, please review Superintendent Mallery's inclement weather letter for important information about notifications and snow bus routes. Being prepared for winter conditions ensures we can keep our students safe and maintain clear communication with families during weather events.

We're excited to announce the beginning of basketball season, with both our middle school and high school teams starting their seasons this week. I encourage our community to come support our OWLS as we host Lake Quinault on Monday, Three Rivers Christian on Tuesday, and Quilcene on Thursday.

Our academic support programs are expanding with after-school tutoring now available Tuesday through Thursday from 3:00-4:30 PM for grades 7-12. This is an excellent opportunity for students to receive additional help with assignments or test preparation from our dedicated teachers.

Looking ahead to the holidays, mark your calendars for our elementary winter concert on December 19th at 5:30 PM in the MMK gym. Also, don't forget that our Saturday youth basketball program for grades K-8 begins this Saturday, December 7th.

As our elementary students begin their Character Strong focus on Empathy this month, it's a perfect time to recognize last week's GRIT award recipients who continue to demonstrate Growth, Resilience, Intensity, and Tenacity in their daily actions. Congratulations to all our elementary and secondary winners.

The secondary (grades 7-12) are beginning after school tutoring for students needing additional help with school work such as missing assignments, studying for tests, or just needing a place to complete work with teacher support. Here are the details for secondary tutoring beginning after Thanksgiving break.

• Dates: Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday
• Time: 3:00 - 4:30 PM
• Teachers: Ms. Barratt, Ms. Bingham, Mr. Plaisance, Ms. Kemp.
• Transportation: Students must be able to transport self or have pick up ability by 4:30 PM

Mark your calendar, the MMK elementary winter concert has been schedule for the evening of December 19, 2024 at 5:30 PM in the MMK gym. Elementary grades will be performing a selection of winter holiday songs and dances for families and friends.

Saturday youth basketball begin on December 7th at Mary M. Knight. This is a great free opportunity for students in grades Kindergarten through 8th grade.

Last year, we had a theme of Above-The-Line and recognized student that were that demonstrated characteristics or actions of being Above-The-Line. This year we will continue our student recognition program as part of our PBIS (Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports) program with our positive referrals and weekly GRIT awards.

GRIT Awards - In the 2024-25 academic year, we're all about embracing 'Nurturing Resilience, Inspiring Excellence' as our guiding principle. We believe that having GRIT – Growth, Resilience, Intensity, and Tenacity – is key to creating a culture where challenges are seen as stepping stones to greatness. We want to foster a growth mindset in our students and ourselves, understanding that hard work and dedication can help us develop our abilities and intelligence. Student will be nominated weekly if they are demonstrating characteristics of GRIT. Student will receive a certificate and shared out.
