WHPE Update May, 2022
"Reach Everyone"
Greetings,
The Society of Health and Physical Educators National Convention was last week, April 26-30, in New Orleans. I was not able to attend the entire week but was able to be there Wednesday through Friday. As I think back to the convention, the differences in people stand out.
Regardless of differences, or perhaps because of differences, people contributed to the SHAPE America Convention in their own way. People attended as their schedule permitted. Some people presented sessions. Some people attended sessions with the intent of taking information home to incorporate into their teaching. People have different interest areas and teach at different levels. Some people were involved in leadership positions, whether at the district or national level.
Differences that were evident at the SHAPE America Convention are also evident in WHPE. Some members are in leadership positions, some give presentations at convention or submit items to the newsletter, and all take information home to incorporate into their teaching. People have different interest areas and teach at different levels.
Contribute in Your Own Way
Contribute to WHPE in your own way. You’ve probably heard the saying, “It takes a village to raise a child.” Similarly, it takes all members to make WHPE successful. And, the more members actively involved in WHPE, the more successful the organization can be.
Lastly, thank you for your contributions to WHPE and to the teaching profession. This week is Teacher Appreciation Week in Wisconsin (see below) and we are so grateful for what you do. May you get a pat-on-the-back from your students and administration.
Happy May!
Dan Timm
WHPE President
Reach Everyone
Kris Fritz – Hall of Fame
Congratulations to Kris Fritz on receiving the Society of Health and Physical Educators Hall of Fame Award. The Hall of Fame Award honors outstanding individuals who make significant contributions to maintaining physical and health education, physical activity, dance and sport as important parts of the total educational program. The recipient symbolizes the educational and developmental potentials of physical education, healthy physical activity, sport and dance. Kris has been a WHPE member for over 50 years, having served the organization in numerous capacities, including president. Additionally, Kris has served the profession at the district and national levels. Thank you for your continued dedication to health and physical education, Kris.
Patty Kestell – NAS Fellow
A hearty round of applause to Patty Kestell for being inducted as a Fellow into the North American Society of Health, Physical Education, Recreation, Sport, and Dance. The North American Society (NAS) recognizes outstanding professionals from within the allied professions of health education, physical education, recreation, sport and dance in North America. Fellows must have demonstrated OUTSTANDING competence through professional involvement over a period of at least 20 years. Patty has served WHPE, Midwest District, and SHAPE America in numerous roles. She was the 2013 National Elementary Teacher-of-the-Year. Thank you for your investment in the future of healthy lifestyles.

Thank you to all for your dedication to your students and service to the profession.
Ashley Inglish – Herb Kohl Fellow

Ashley teaches physical education and health and coaches volleyball at Waterford High School. Congratulations, Ashley for the importance you give to teaching.
National Physical Education & Sport Week
May 1-7 is National Physical Education & Sport Week. Do you have plans to publicize your physical education program this week? Free activity ideas and resources are available at National PE and Sport Week (shapeamerica.org) If you haven’t already done so, now would be a good time to invite your principal or district superintendent to visit your classes.
Wisconsin Teacher Appreciation Week
May 2-6 is Teacher Appreciation Week in Wisconsin as proclaimed by State Superintendent, Dr. Jill Underly. A Proclamation - Teacher Appreciation Week 2022 (wi.gov) Regardless of how long you have been teaching, thank you from WHPE for the work you do. Teachers are often unsung heroes, toiling away for the betterment of their students. Often, teachers are not aware of the impact their teaching has on students as students often have moved on to other grades before the impact is noticeable. For everything you do, thank you! WHPE is proud of each of you!
National Physical Education Standards Revision
You can still provide input into the revision of the National Physical Education Standards. Go to National Physical Education Standards Task Force (shapeamerica.org) for more information. Public review and comment are available through May 16.
Have You Requested Time Off for Convention?
The 2022 WHPE Convention will be October 26-28. Have you requested from your school/district to have off those days so you can attend convention? In many locales, teachers have to submit their requests in the spring for days off the following year. We don’t want you to miss convention because you had not submitted your request in a timely manner. We were back in-person in 2021 and are looking forward to another great convention this year. Don’t miss it!
WHPE’s 125th Anniversary – Fighting for Physical Education
During my year as president-elect and my year as president, WHPE had to defend physical education’s place in the K-12 curriculum as an academic subject. The state legislature was considering Assembly Bill 706 in 2002, which if passed, would have allowed schools to grant physical education credit for participation in athletic sports. As president-elect I, along with other WHPE members, testified at the state capital in opposition to the bill.
The next year, 2003, Assembly Bill 68, sponsored by Representative Mark Pettis, was being considered. Executive Director Keith Bakken asked Rep. Pettis if he would write an article for the WHPE Newsletter explaining the rationale for his bill. After he agreed to the request, I then wrote why WHPE was opposed to the bill and the WHPE Newsletter had both opinions on the front page. The NASPE advocacy position papers and defending physical education statements were very helpful for my rebuttal. My piece included the following main points:
1. Physical Education has a knowledge base grounded in the sciences of anatomy, physiology, and human development.
2. Physical education has academic learning outcomes in the cognitive, neuromuscular, affective, and HRPF domains (that last domain is showing my age!)
3. Physical educators are trained, licensed, and certified K-12 teachers, whereas some coaches are not trained educators.
4. The “new” physical education (at the time!) stressed lifetime-based activities, participation over skill level, and promoted exercise principles like F.I.T.T.
5. Sports programs were exclusive in nature, training was sport specific skill-based with different objectives, and a focus on winning especially at the secondary level. I added some other points about the bill being very broadly written with how grades would be awarded.
Fortunately, neither bill was passed or signed into law. However, we still must be vigilant today in defending physical education’s role the schools.
Honor a Colleague Campaign
In tribute to those who have served as professional leaders, mentors, and friends, WHPE challenges members to recognize one or more such individuals with a $10/honoree donation. Names of both honoree and sponsor will be published in our digital 125th Anniversary Program along with the 2023 Winter edition of the WHPE Newsletter. Sponsors will receive a Certificate of Appreciation for being part of this special campaign. During the 100th Anniversary Celebration in 1997, over 200 WAHPERD/WHPE members were honored. Let’s surpass that number for the 125th Celebration and recognize deserving colleagues both past and present.
Members can submit the sign-up form with payment to the WHPE Office by September 1, 2022. WHPE125th Anniversary sign up.docx.
WHPE has a long history of positive influence upon our Health and Physical Education profession. Please choose to honor those who have directly impacted you while also supporting WHPE’s 125th Anniversary events.
September Membership Special
WHPE will be offering a membership special during the month of September. Between September 1 and 30, any WHPE member can renew their membership for $20 off the regular price if they recruit a new member. The new member will also receive $20 off their membership. A new member can be a former WHPE member whose membership has expired or a person who has never been a WHPE member. This offer applies to all membership levels – professional, future professional, lifetime, retired, and associate.
Who do you know that you could recruit to be a WHPE member? Schools will soon be doing budgeting for next year. Encourage the person you will recruit to include a WHPE membership and possibly convention registration into next year’s budget.
