Elizabeth Schools BOE Recap
Highlights from the December 3, 2018, meeting
Proposed 2019-2020 district calendar
The district Calendar Committee met in November to review a draft calendar for the 2019-2020 school year. There are two things to note on the proposed calendar: the last day of school is on Friday versus Thursday as in years passed and the Elizabeth High School graduation date is to be determined due to potential conflicts with the state track meet for EHS seniors.
Parents can view the proposed 2019-2020 calendar and provide comments and feedback to calendarfeedback@esdk12.org. The calendar for next school year is expected to be approved at the January 14 board meeting.
Mill levy adjustment
Based on information received from the assessor’s office and the Colorado Department of Education's calculations using the School Finance Formula, the 2019 mill for the general fund will be 26.743 mills while the rate for the mill levy override will be 7.490 mills, for a combined rate of 34.233 mills. The total millage is 0.149 lower than last year.
This year’s net total assessed valuation of property within school district boundaries increased by $3,101,133.The change in actual valuation was an increase of $44,047,660. Residential property is taxed on 7.2% of actual value while commercial property is taxed at 29%.
Salary schedule proposals
The proposed certified (teachers/licensed staff) and classified (support staff) salary schedules that include pay increases resulting from the mill levy override passage were presented to the board. The schedules represent a minimum 10% increase for certified staff and a minimum 7.5% increase for classified staff. The proposed salary schedules are forward-looking to be more competitive with surrounding school districts.
Minimum wage increases to $12 in January 2020 and the district is proactively adjusting the classified salary schedule to meet the requirement. About 50 classified employees would be impacted by the minimum wage increase. A portion of the total increase in compensation reflected on the proposed classified salary schedule is a result of the minimum wage requirement. That portion of the increase will not be paid for by the mill levy override proceeds.
The proposed coaching salary schedule increases compensation for coaching positions by 20%. The goal is to attract quality candidates who are willing to stay in the district.
The next Board of Education meeting is Monday, Jan. 14, at 6 p.m. in the board room at the district office.
