Scott Middle School's Motto- "We Enter to Learn and Leave to Achieve"
What Has Been Happening in Ms. Glackman's Classroom?
There is always so much happening in English Language Development class! English Language Learners must work extra hard for English acquisition and for that reason they work on a variety of activities that target learning through speaking, writing, reading, and listening. Here are a few activities that students are currently engaging in ELD/ESL.
(Listening/Speaking) This year, students now can practice English using a new district program, Rosetta Stone. Rosetta Stone provides students with listening, speaking, and reading practice. Students utilize Rosetta Stone 20 minutes daily as part of their learning routine.
(Reading/Vocabulary) We’re also reading and finishing books! While reading daily independently, students focus on a specific story element then write a reader’s response of that story element: setting, characters, conflict, story events and solution. Aside from reading real, physical books, students also read stories online using the Raz-Kids program. This program is ideal for English learners as it highlights words as the story is read aloud to students. Students use program tools to define a word as well as how to pronounce new vocabulary words. Once students finish reading a story, they take a reading comprehension quiz.
(Writing/Grammar) The writing topic we have been diving into these past couple of weeks is descriptive writing. Students have been practicing writing a descriptive paragraph on different topics. Since you can’t write a descriptive paragraph without using adjectives, students are learning how to identify and use a variety of adjectives.
Aside from English, students are competing against each other on math facts. Students practice their math facts by first competing against themselves on a certain focus number (0 – 12). Once they feel they are fluent on that focus number, they answer 100 facts on that focus number in one minute before moving on to the next number. They are striving to get to 12 first, some students are very close!

PBIS Door Decorating Contest
As a review of our PBIS expectations: Respect, Ownership, Courage, Kindness, and Safety, students and staff were challenged to a door decorating contest. Each WIN class worked together to create a door around one of our character traits. Our Related Arts teachers judged the doors on theme, creativity, craftsmanship and appeal. The winners were announced on Friday. Congratulations to Mrs. Fisher's Kindness door, Mrs. Fogg's Courage door, and Ms. Taylor's Respect door. Each of their WIN classes were treated to Philadelphia Pretzel Factory pretzels during WIN. Great work everyone!
Honoring Black History Month
We have been learning about famous Black Americans during morning announcements. Last week students learned about Jesse Owens, Kamala Harris, Maya Angelou, Thurgood Marshall and Ruby Bridges. On Friday, a trivia question was asked and students were able to answer for a chance at a prize. Cayden was the first student to bring his answer of Thurgood Marshall to the question: Who was instrumental in ending legal segregation, and his name was the one that was pulled from the pile. Congratulations, Cayden!
Welcome, Ms. Harris!
Ms. Harris recently joined Scott's support team and is working with Mrs. Imburgia and Ms. T to support our students success. Ms. Harris is excited to be at Scott, and impressed by how welcoming our students and staff have been. Ms. Harris is from Coatesville and is a dog mom. She likes to read, hike and spend time with her family and friends. Welcome, Ms. Harris. We are so glad you joined our Scott team!
Mental Health Fair
On Friday February 28, Scott Middle School hosted the second in a series of mental health wellness events. This session, sponsored by the Coatesville youth initiative (CYI) Community Coalition, focused on the coping skills we all need to better regulate our emotions and avoid conflicts. Presenters represented community agencies and organizations from across Coatesville. We are very thankful to CYI, the YMCA, CCIU, CompassMark, Crime Victims Center, Lutheran Church of the Good Shepherd, Family Services, Maternal Child health Consortium, and Juvenile Probation Office for taking the time to be with us.
Golden Ticket Prize Winners for February
Congratulations to our February Golden Ticket prize winners! Last Friday, ten Golden Tickets were pulled from the box in the main office. Golden Tickets are earned when students go above and beyond our expectations of Respect, Ownership, Courage, Kindness and Safety. Staff give them to students when they are really impressed. The following 10 students were given the choice of a Dunkin Donut or a sweet treat at lunch.
Congratulations to: Makenzie Thompson-Myers, Isabella Kravec, Emily O'Neil, Dylan Figueroa, Anthony Segura, Xaviah Anderson, Brianna Richards, Ka'Seem Lawrence, Nero Franciscus, and Kendall Wilkinson.
Keep up the great work! We are so proud of you!
February's Students of the Month: Brayden Leech and Sydney Wilkins
Brayden: Brayden is always going above and beyond to be kind and helpful to others and try his best in his classwork EVERY DAY.
Sydney: She works hard in my class, is friendly, tries to get her peers on track.
Both students are hard workers and show respectful behaviors daily. They have had a wonderful first half of the school year academically as well, and we are so proud of them! Keep up the great work!
Ms. Russum is February's Employee of the Month
Congratulations, Ms. Russum! We are so lucky to have Ms. Russum working in our Scott office. Everyday, every time, every request, she is sincere in her efforts to support whatever we need. She is kind, supportive and calm. Ms. Russum juggles many tasks and meets every challenge with determination, and has kind words for every visitor, student or staff member that enters the office. Even on days that are chaotic, she is dependable, flexible and always problem solving. She does everything she can to support the entire staff not only as a colleague but as a friend. Ms. Russum is so good at her job, handles everything that is thrown at her with grace, and is always good for some fun!
We also want to congratulate our runners up: Mrs. Marchesani, Mrs. Hamilton, and Ms. Taylor. All three staff members were given a gift card to treat themselves at Dunkin. We have an amazing team here at Scott.
