Effective Grading Practices
Effective grading practices for middle school can help create a supportive learning environment while accurately reflecting student achievement. Here are some best practices:
1. Use Standards-Based Grading
- Focus on Mastery: Assess students based on their understanding of specific standards or skills rather than on a cumulative point system.
- Clear Learning Targets: Clearly communicate learning objectives and success criteria to students.
2. Provide Formative Feedback
- Ongoing Assessment: Use quizzes, drafts, and other formative assessments to gauge student progress and provide constructive feedback.
- Opportunities for Revision: Allow students to revise their work based on feedback, promoting a growth mindset.
3. Offer Multiple Assessment Opportunities
- Varied Assessments: Include a mix of tests, projects, presentations, and other assessment types to cater to different learning styles.
- Retakes and Redos: Allow students to retake assessments or redo assignments to demonstrate improved understanding.
4. Regularly Update Grades
- Timely Feedback: Provide students with up-to-date grades so they know where they stand and what areas need improvement.
- Open Communication: Keep lines of communication open with students and parents regarding grades and progress.
5. Avoid Zeroes for Missing Work
- Incomplete vs. Zero: Instead of giving a zero for missing assignments, use "Incomplete" to encourage students to submit work and focus on mastery.
These practices help create a fair, supportive, and motivating grading system that encourages student growth and accurately reflects their learning.
Wold's wings Day Corner
Wold’s WingsDay Corner
Great work teachers! While I wasn’t able to get into EVERY classroom, our first intervention Wednesday was a relative success and many teachers were meeting the expectation by running stations and teacher-led stations. Your coaches and I will continue to provide needed support to PLCs and individual teachers to increase the fidelity of this important intervention day.
Effective intervention and small group, teacher-led instruction are crucial for student success! These strategies allow teachers to address the diverse needs of students, providing targeted support where it's most needed. By following these expectations, you ensure that every student receives personalized attention, enabling them to overcome challenges and build confidence. Consistent implementation of these practices not only helps close achievement gaps but also fosters a classroom environment where all students can thrive. Your commitment to these approaches makes a significant difference in each student's academic journey.
Expectations:
- PLTs should meet at least once every 3 weeks to analyze data and plan for intervention
- During WingsDay:
- Students should be grouped intentionally based on need into stations or flexibly grouped amongst PLT
- Students should receive timely feedback during data chats with teachers
- Students should have the opportunity to frequently work with the teacher in small groups
- Teachers can include Micro-teaching or mini re-teach lessons, but whole group lessons should be limited
- Should Include VE teacher station
- Teachers should have a teacher-led small group station
- WingsDay should NOT:
- Be an extension and continuation of the previous day’s lesson
- Be used as a "make up" work day or study hall
- Introduce new content
- Include whole group Instruction

If you find something unlocked, you MUST report it to ADMIN immediately.
- We will work through the issues and discuss how we will operate during the day
- Yes, you may still bring your kids during pre-planning as long as they can supervise themselves if you are in a meeting, No kids Monday (unless they are volunteering) or Friday.

Canvas Helpful Resources
Canvas Minute Clinic!
Please be sure to share with your teachers: The Canvas Team is piloting a new way to get all of our teachers trained, in small, bite-sized pieces! Teachers will have access to a new, short video each week that will teach them a Canvas process and will have follow-up opportunities to ask questions. We call this the Canvas Minute Clinic! If you’d like to learn, feel free to join Canvas Central today and watch for the first video to be released on Monday, August 5th!
Emergency Sub Plans
Please create 3 days of emergency sub plan and send the plans to Jeannie Spitzer. This is to be used in case of an emergency and you are out without a sub plan.
PBIS Reminders
Conferences & ESE Meetings
Teachers, if you are scheduled for a conference or an ESE meeting, please make sure you are present at the meeting. If you have a conflict, please see me.
Positive Phrasing
Seeing an uptick in behavior? Focus on the positive! Use phrases to emphasize the positive behavior you want. Examples: "Thank you for being in your seat when the bell rings" or "Thank you to those students who have started their bell work." You will see an increase in students doing the right thing. Behavior changes when there is a balance of positive and negative.
Let's focus on the positive!
Teacher and Para Start Time
Official hours for teachers and paras: 9:10 AM - 4:40 PM. I have noticed an increase in staff arriving after the 9:10 start time. Please make every effort to be on time. This means you are on campus by 9:10 AM and ready to begin work. If you are going to be late, please make sure you notify admin and Ms. Spitzer.
Greet Every Student at Your Door
Please make sure during passing, you are at your door or in the hallway greeting students as they come to class. This is expected each period, even when you are on planning and lunch.
Walk Students to Lunch
Please help us ensure all teachers even substitutes are walking their class to lunch AFTER the 3rd (tardy) bell.
- Best practices- set up stopping points when you exit the building or come down the stairs to ensure your students are in a line walking to the cafeteria
- Try to avoid cutting off, passing or clumping with other classes to prevent the clustering of students
- Walk them all the way to the doors
Please wait until the tardy bell (3rd bell of transition) to walk your students to class.
Teachers- if your line is a scatter plot (ask the math teachers) then stop the class and ensure they are in line. Best practice is to have a line leader and stopping points along the way to ensure students stay with your class. Teach the class the procedure so they will follow it even when a substitute is in the room. Make it an expectation.
8th Grade you do a phenomenal job of ensuring students stay in line and stay orderly as they walk to class.
Mixed Classes: If you have a mixed grade level class- release only the grades not going to class for transition and line up the grade level going to class. Once the 3rd bell rings, if you have another class you can then send those students with another class from your hallway. Example: 7th graders in Civics and Algebra in building 5 line up in the hallway and Ms. Conde gathers them and escorts them to the cafeteria.
Lesson Plan Link
Please use the link to submit lesson plans. Lesson Plan are due by the Monday before you teach. You may submit more than a week at a time (example- submitting a unit plan with 4 weeks of lessons).
PLTs are encouraged to plan together and may submit 1 plan, but all names must be present and it is an expectation that everyone contributes to the plan.
WEDNESDAYS- First 15 minutes & WINGS
First 15 Minutes: Reflections/ Weekly Goals/ Grade Checks
WINGS Expectations:
Lunch Tutoring
1) Tutoring for students during lunch should not be taking place if you have a class during their lunch.
2) If you choose to tutor during lunch (voluntarily), you must pick students up from the cafeteria and escort them to the classroom. They should not leave your room until the next transition bell.
Students will no longer be permitted to leave the cafeteria with passes. They have abused this privilege and are using it to roam and hang out in bathrooms.
Not on your Roster- Not in your Room
Reminder- if students come to your room and they are not on that class period roster you should not allow them in. Students should be in the classroom they are assigned each period.
If you need a student to complete an assignment or test, please call the teacher and ask permission to have the student after they have reported to their teacher for attendance.
Safety = Everyone's Responsibility
Reminders of do's and don'ts:
- Do stand at your door during passing and greet students. The door may be propped open ONLY if you are standing in the doorway.
- Don't prop your door open if you are not standing in the doorway. I have allowed you to keep door stops, but if you prop your door during class I will be forced to confiscate the door stops.
- Do use your emergency call button if you have a medical emergency or if you need help for an emergency (fight, student out of control)
- Don't line students up before the bell- the emergency call button often accidentally gets pushed.
- Don't allow students to answer your phone- We are calling to speak to you!
- Don't give your keys to students
- Do monitor the hallways and bathrooms when you are walking through campus on planning. Quick checks will assist in cutting down skipping class.
- Do ensure doors close tightly behind you (side door, classroom door, gates).
- Do wear your ID badge each day!
Best Practices:
Restroom Times and tracking: In facilities where teachers collaborate to monitor student restroom visits and restrict access during the first and last 10 minutes of each class period, we have observed a significant decrease in disruptive behavior within the bathrooms. Furthermore, our leadership team is dedicated to monitoring security cameras and conducting spot checks as necessary to maintain a safe and orderly environment.
Duty Locations: It is absolutely crucial that we are present at our designated duty locations. This includes being positioned at your classroom door during transitions or any other assigned area. If your hallway has not yet designated individuals to be stationed at critical areas such as the restrooms, back stairwells, and front doors, please ensure that someone is assigned to these locations by Monday.
If, for any reason, you are unable to fulfill your duty at either the morning (AM) or afternoon (PM) shift, it is vital that you inform a fellow team member, especially if your absence pertains to a more specific location. Open communication is essential in maintaining a safe and orderly environment.
By staying vigilant, we can prevent a lot of the student behaviors before they happen
