Financial Aid and Scholarships
The FAFSA is available on December 1st and should be completed your senior year. The FAFSA determines if you are eligible for grants, which is free money, in addition to loans.FAFSA also determines if students are eligible for work study programs at the campus. Even if you don't think you are eligible for either, still complete because many scholarships will ask for it.
It’s also a graduation requirement!
Steps to Complete FAFSA
Step 1) Create FSA ID at https://studentaid.gov/FSA-ID
Step 2) Gather Necessary Documents and Materials
Step 3) Fill Out FAFSA at https://studentaid.gov
Step 4) Sign and Submit
Step 5) Follow Up at https://studentaid.gov and college student portal
Step 1: How to Create Your FSA ID
Student and parent/guardian will each have their own FSA ID using different personal emails.
Step 2: Which Documents Will You Need
Please note that most financial information will come from the contributor (parent).
If you qualify to file independently due to a special circumstance, please contact your school counselor.
Step 3: Complete FAFSA Form
1) Start FAFSA for at http://studentaid.gov using your FSA ID
2) Fill out the "Student Demographics" sections
3) Select the schools to which you want your FAFSA information sent
4) Answer the "Dependency Status" questions
5) Fill out the "Parent Demographics: section
6) Supply you financial information
7) Sign and submit your FAFSA form

1)Check your FAFSA confirmation for important information.
2) Review you FAFSA Submission Summary
3) Make FAFSA corrections, if needed.
4) Complete your state's aid application
5) Compare schools and out-of-pocket costs.
6) Apply for Scholarships
7) Watch for your financial aid offers.
Scholarships directly from the College/University
- The biggest chunk of scholarship you receive will likely come directly from the university.
- Go to the university website and find the financial aid/scholarship tab or google "UNT Scholarships" (insert name of school you are looking to go to).
- If you cannot find the scholarship page, reach out to the financial aid department at the university or contact your Boswell counselor for help!
Private Scholarships
- These scholarships are seen as "the gravy" and just add to whatever grants/scholarships you have already been awarded.
- These scholarships can be used towards different schools and aren't just tied to 1 college/university.
- These scholarships are also usually a 1 time award and aren't offered yearly like many scholarship packages that the school will award
- Numerous Scholarships are listed Schoolinks in student's SSO (Local, State, and National)

Friendly Reminders:
1) Once you have been accepted into a school, please set up your college portal immediately.
2) All communication from each school will be delivered through the college portal.
3) Financial Aid packages will be viewed and accepted in college portal.
4) You do Not have to accept the student loans if you have an alternative source for payment
5) Each school will differ on how to apply for scholarships. Some schools will automatically award scholarships, some schools will have a general application, and some schools with have a scholarship portal with individual scholarships listed.
6) Once accepted, CHECK COLLEGE EMAIL OFTEN!
