Messages From The Principal
Dear Parents,
Please read the important information regarding the emergency planning by West Wing School and the Deer Valley Unified School District
The safety and security of our students is our highest priority. Our school and DVUSD regularly plan and practice to ensure we are prepared for emergencies. This letter will inform you of some of the procedures we will follow to protect our students during an emergency.
What happens during an emergency? During an emergency school administrators will secure the campus in what is called a lockdown. Classroom doors are locked, gates to the campus are closed and locked, and no one is permitted to enter or exit the campus until school administrators give the all-clear signal. If there is immediate danger, teachers will stop lessons, close window blinds, turn off lights, and direct students to the most secure area of the classroom or building. School personnel work closely with public safety officials during emergencies.
Students may be kept on campus. In the event of immediate danger to health and safety on or in proximity to campus, public safety officials may direct the school to keep students on campus, even after school hours, until the all-clear signal is given.
If such an emergency occurs, students will be released only to an adult who has been identified as a parent, guardian or emergency contact on your student’s Emergency Card. It is important that you complete this card at the beginning of every school year and update it as needed.
The school district is prepared to provide food, water, and the medications listed on your child’s School Year Medication Record to your child if we are directed to hold students on campus.
What to do if your child is kept on campus during an emergency.
To keep phone lines free for emergency use, do not call the school. Information will be provided on the school website, by telephone dialers, email, and/or text message, and through the news media. This will include information on when and where to pick up your student.
If you speak with your students on a cell phone, remind them of the importance of following the directions of their teachers and public safety officials.
I strongly encourage you to check and update your student’s Emergency Card and School Year Medication Record with a list of authorized contacts, health conditions, and medications needed.
Please call me if you have any questions or concerns about our emergency plans or procedures.

Bond and Override 2024
Dear West Wing Community,
On November 5, 2024, voters living within the DVUSD boundaries will have the opportunity to vote on two initiatives passed by the DVUSD governing board for public authorization:
- Special Bond Election in the amount of $325 million to fund safety, security, instructional resources, technology, building renewal, conservation, buses, and student growth through the year 2029.
- Continuation of the existing 15% maintenance and operation (M&O) override. The 2019 voter approved override will be entering the phase down period, and vital funds (approximately $33 million) will no longer be available after December 31, 2024.
Learn what this special bond would fund at our Bond FAQ page.
Learn what the M&O Override funds at our Override FAQ page.

Attendance
Dear Parents,
We are excited to introduce a new way of reporting your child's absences. We have created a Google Form for your convenience. Please use this form anytime to let us know that your child will not be present at school. You can of course still call our attendance line if that is more convenient for you.
Full Day Absences
Please use this form to report a full day absence.
Partial Day Absences
Please leave a message to report partial absences.
Office Reminders
- We do not sign out kids 15 minutes before dismissal (3:15 is the cutoff).
- Phone messages are delivered to students at 2:30. If there is a pick up change, please call our office before 2:30.
- For those who are interested in volunteering in classrooms and/or attending field trips, you will need to attend a one time district volunteer training (class locations and times can be found at www.dvusd.org). If you have already taken the training you must come in to the front office to update your information. Volunteers only need to attend the training once for the entire time their child attends a DVUSD school.
Volunteers and Visitors
Please be sure to bring your ID into the office when you check-in. All volunteers and visitors are scanned in and a sticker is printed for you to wear while on campus. Please stop in the office to scan your badge when you depart campus. Volunteers, like all adults, are role models for children. Therefore volunteers are expected to demonstrate good character and ethical behavior. Please do not engage in any behavior or activity that may cause harm to themselves or others. In addition, physical contact is not encouraged and should be limited to brief encouraging behaviors such as a "high five" or handshake. Please take your lead from staff and dress appropriately for the job you are doing. Casual clothing is fine; However, be neat and professional. No Spaghetti straps, bare midriffs or backs, or negative t-shirts. Thank you for your cooperation with this.

During our 2:00 pm dismissal time teachers meet in together and we call these Collaborative Team meetings. West Wing is a PLC school (Professional Learning Community). Our 90 minute early release days support planning for student learning, interventions, and targeted support. This time is invaluable to our teachers, and our students, as it gives critical time to our teacher teams to design skill-based instruction and assessments, review student progress data, and design supports and interventions. Learn more about what happens in PLC at DVUSD.org/PLC.
