Communication and Media Department to Host Election Day Coverage
The Department of Communication and Media will host an all-day election coverage event beginning at 9 a.m. on Tuesday, November 5 at the department lobby and conference room in the DeChiaro College Center. The watch party will take place in the department lobby from noon - 6 p.m.
As part of the event, student journalists and editors of The Greyhound, Loyola’s student newspaper, will collaborate with communication and media faculty to publish stories for the newspaper.
While the event is not open to the public, members of the community are encouraged to follow The Greyhound’s election reporting. All Communication and Media students will have an opportunity to participate in Election Day coverage.
Later in the day, The Karson Institute for Race, Peace & Social Justice will be hosting an Election Night Watch Party from 7 p.m. to midnight at the Loyola/Notre Dame Library. The Karson Institute has partnered with UMBC's School of Public Policy, MissionFit, and the Short Kuts Show for this event.

WLOY Radio Wins Two National Awards
WLOY Radio station has won two awards in Special Broadcast competition at the student media competition organized by the College Broadcasters Inc. Students in Prof. Jenny Glick’s Radio Storytelling class created two the award-winning special broadcasts, “Covid Legacy – Evergreen Echo” and “Evergreen Advocacy,” which were later edited and aired by the WLOY station. WLOY student leaders Daniel Carter and Fiona Galang received the awards for the station.
The New York Times Field Trip
Fifteen students from The Greyhound, Loyola’s student newspaper, and journalism senior capstone class this fall will visit the newsroom of The New York Times in mid-November. Peter Blair, ‘03, Editor of The New York Times and a member of the department’s inaugural advisory board, will host Loyola students, faculty and an administrator.
The Greyhound faculty advisor Prof. Jenny Glick, journalism capstone instructor Prof. April Newton and Rizzo Career Center’s Director of Partnerships and Recruiting Eileen Hiebler will accompany the students.
This field trip is supported by the Rizzo Career Center, Dean of the Loyola College of Arts & Sciences, and the Communication and Media Department.
Communication major received ArtBound Initiative's Spring Excellence Scholarship
Lauren Blose, a junior majoring in communication and media and minoring in marketing, is the recipient of the ArtBound Initiative's Spring Excellence Scholarship.
Lauren will receive 2,000 dollars for this scholarship to participate in a spring 2025 program that entails a) internship preparation coaching and curriculum, b) a guaranteed internship placement in the creative industries, and c) professional network and support.
Loyola's Career Center has partnered with the ArtBound Initiative, a global career accelerator for creatives, to offer this opportunity to Loyola students. The Spring Excellence Scholarship provides one student from Loyola University Maryland a guaranteed internship placement in the creative industries.
As a communication major, Lauren is doing a double specialization in advertising/public relations and digital media.
Baltimore Fishbowl published Jenna Mattern's story
Communication and Media junior and The Greyhound writer, Jenna Mattern's story, "New float helps celebrate 25th anniversary of the Great Halloween Lantern Parade," was published in Baltimore Fishbowl.
The Greyhound's faculty advisor, Jenny Glick said, "we had the first student story published in the Fishbowl."
Jenna is majoring in communication and media with a double specialization in digital media and journalism and pursuing a minor in writing.
Advisory Board visited the Department on Sept. 27
The Communication and Media Advisory Board (CMAB) visited the department on Friday, September 27. The Board also held its first in-person meeting on campus.
The CMAB was formed in spring 2024 to advance the work of the communication and media department.
According to the Board’s webpage, it offers “insight and advice to the department chair regarding programs, policies, and plans” in addition to “supporting the work of Loyola University Maryland through philanthropy and direct engagement with the faculty and students; and serving as ambassadors for Loyola and the department.”
Krista Phillips, ‘93, an EVP, Head of Consumer Credit Cards & Consumer Lending Marketing at Wells Fargo, is the Board’s inaugural chair.
LUM PRSSA at ICON 2024
In her role as the LUM PRSSA Chapter faculty adviser, Tania Cantrell Rosas-Moreno, Ph.D., attended PRSSA ICON 2024 in Anaheim, California, Oct. 13-17, 2024, with LUM PRSSA Chapter President Eisa Abu-Sbaih. A summary of Eisa’s student experience is available here, and it includes key takeaways from keynote addresses by CEO of Academy of Country Music Damon Whiteside as well as VP of Comms for Disneyland Resort Suzi Brown.
In various sessions of this conference, both Prof. Rosas-Moreno and Eisa Abu-Sbaih learned about tips and tactics geared at promoting brand stories to internal and external audiences that best align with key organizational audiences and budgets to empower becoming an enthusiastic brand storyteller. Participation in this event offered networking opportunities, especially with industry representatives, for the LUM PRSSA.
Returning to almost pre-COVID numbers, PRSA ICON, held concurrently, boasted 1700+ registrations; about 70 breakout sessions; and 30+ sponsors and exhibitors.
Faculty Highlights
Prof. Glick is recognized as "faculty champion" for local news
Professor Jenny Glick is a recipient of the Center for Community News' Faculty Champion fellowship for 2024 - 25. This program identifies faculty champions who are working to create a "sustainable future for local news" through campus media and news reporting programs. This year's cohort of 52 Faculty Champions represent 24 different states.

CM Professors publish on public health emergencies
Dr. Paola Pascual-Ferrá and Dr. Neil Alperstein's co-authored article has been published in the Journal of Medicinal Internet Research. This study titled "Assessing Message Deployment During Public Health Emergencies Through Social Media: Empirical Test of Optimizing Content for Effective Dissemination" led by Pascual-Ferrá and included a group of researchers from the U.S. and India.
This study offered a low-cost method geared toward NGOs and other non-profit organizations for judging how to format their videos for distribution on various internet channels based on the demographic characteristics of their audiences.
Prof. Newton quoted in Reuters Institute’s article
Communication and Media Professor April Newton was quoted in the Reuters Institute for the Study of Journalism's article on AI broadcast readers. Prof. Newton commented on the use of feminine digital assistants.
Faculty publication received NABJ’s Outstanding Book Award
Communication and Media Department Chair Dr. Masudul Biswas’s co-authored book, Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Strategies: Learning from Journalism and Mass Communication Programs with Professional Impact received outstanding book award at the 2024 National Association of Black Journalists (NABJ) convention in Chicago. Dr. Biswas and his co-author Dr. Dorothy Bland, professor and former dean of Mayborn School of Journalism at the University of North Texas, was invited to present their work at the NABJ Convention’s authors’ showcase this year.
Recent Graduates
Marie Bosslett, ‘24, started her full-time role as an assistant editor with Dermatology Times, a brand of MJH Life Sciences. Marie was The Greyhound’s former Editor-in-Chief and former President of the Communication Honor Society, Lambda Pi Eta. She did an internship with the Baltimore Magazine.
