East Middle School - Friday Update
August 30th, 2024
Welcome!
Hello everyone! My name is Ted Younglas, and I am proud to be the Principal of East Middle School. I am entering my 4th year as Principal here, and I want to personally welcome you to the 2024-2025 school year.
If you are new to East Middle School, we are so excited to meet you and work along side you. If your child is nervous about starting at East, please put their mind at ease. We will take great care of them. On the first day of school there will be WEB leaders wearing WEB shirts and staff who are visible and ready to help students find their classes. We are ready to help everyone get to where they need to go!
I am going to apologize in advance for the length of this email. In the future, I will try to keep my updates brief, but there is a lot of information to share at the beginning of the year. Please take the time to read through the following sections for important information and updates.
Important Dates
Tuesday, September 3: First day of school (half day 8:15-11:30)
Wednesday, September 4: First day of Cross Country practice - 3:15
Thursday, September 12: East Open House - 6:00-7:30
Wednesday, September 18: EPTC Meeting - 6:00
Thursday, September 26: School Picture Day!
Be Sure To Check MiStar
Most of you came to our schedule pick up last week and received your schedules. Before school starts on Tuesday, please be sure to go into MiStar to double check your schedule. We discovered that there was a mistake in one room number. That change will be reflected in the updated MiStar schedule. Additionally, we had to change a few schedules. Most of those families have been notified of the change, but it is always good to go in and double check. Schedules are currently visible in MiStar.
Rocket Booster Fundraiser!
The East Parent-Teacher Council (EPTC) decided to move the Rocket Booster no-hassle fundraiser to the Fall, so we can more effectively put your donations to use during the school year. The Rocket Booster launched earlier this month, and you may begin donating now by going to bit.ly/eastrocketbooster. Your generosity has helped to support all East students, teachers, and staff, including purchasing new sports equipment for students, kits for each classroom in case of lockdown, 8th Grade Celebration t-shirts, and providing funds to teachers for items not covered by district funds. We have set an ambitious goal of $15,000, and can meet it if we receive $30-40 per family, although there is no obligation to give. Thank you for considering supporting East and we are grateful for your contributions!
Cross Country Information
Cross Country practice begins Wednesday, September 4th at East M.S.. Cross country is open to all interested sixth, seventh and eighth grade students. Cross country is a great opportunity for students to learn about running, get exercise, and to make new friends.
Items that are needed for cross country are a current SPORTS PHYSICAL(https://bit.ly/MHSAAphysical) on file (dated April 15, 2024 or later), the Pay to Participate fee, and a team shirt for meets. Running shoes are suggested. Team shirts, which students keep, are $12. Students that already have a shirt do not need to purchase a new one.

Zero Hour at the High School
If your student has a zero hour class at the high school, please be sure to check out the information below.
Families Middle School Students in Orchestra:
Classes begin on Monday, September 9th. There are NO Middle School Orchestra classes during the first week of school.
Students will ride the high school bus route in the morning. This route is shown under the Run column in MISTAR Parent Connect and will have the initials, HS. The bus route runs daily even though it only says W on the schedule.
After Orchestra ends, students will be picked up in the Salem student parking lot near the outside east entrance ("pool/gym entrance") at Salem and shuttled to their middle school.
Middle School Students in Math & World Language courses:
Students will be attending their 1st hour classes at the Park starting on Wednesday, September 4th

Cell Phone Policy - Away for the Day!
East, along with the other four middle schools, is an away for the day school when it comes to cell phones. To keep the focus on academics and to reduce unnecessary distractions, the school will be enforcing the following:
Cell phones and all mobile devices shall be TURNED OFF upon entering the building at 8:00 am until dismissal at 3:09 pm.
Cell phones and all mobile devices shall be kept in a student’s locker – not in clothing pockets or in pencil cases.
Cell phones, and all mobile devices, are not allowed to be used in locker rooms or restrooms at any time.
In rare cases, cell phones may be used in a classroom when directed by the teacher and for academic purposes only.
If a student needs to make an emergency call during the day, they should come to the office to place a call.
Consequences are progressive and can be found in the student handbook.
We ask that families and students use the main office when communicating messages from home or school.
No Backpacks in Class
During the school day, backpacks will not be permitted in the classroom. This means that students may bring their backpacks to and from school, but they must be stored in their lockers during the school day.
At the start of the school year teachers will work with students to help them develop a locker plan based on their individual schedule. This is designed to help students manage their supplies/ materials throughout the school day and will include helping students understand when they should use their lockers, which items to store in their locker and which items to take with them.
Lunch and Breakfast Update
Thanks to the Michigan Schools Meal Program, the Nutrition Services Department can serve all our students one breakfast and one lunch at no cost to you for the 2024-25 school year!
We are asking all students to wear their student ID when accessing the food service lines at East Middle School. Students will need to swipe their ID to receive their breakfast or lunch. Students will be given a lanyard for their I.D. Please have them wear this every day while at school.
Families are still encouraged to complete the Summer EBT and Education Benefits with the Michigan School Meals Program Application. Families that qualify for Summer EBT and Educational Benefits with the Michigan School Meals Program are eligible for additional benefits, including discounts for pay-to-participate, access to computer WI-FI, and other reduced fees.
More information about Food and Nutrition Services for the 2024-25 school year is available on the P-CCS Food & Nutrition Services page.

Pick Up and Drop Off Procedures
As you may know, East Middle School is currently undergoing some construction as a result of the 2020 district bond. This construction will go on throughout the year. As a result, there will some changes to our pick up and drop off procedures.
When dropping off in the morning, please use door five. This will be the same door that students will use to exit the building at the end of the day.
If you are dropping your child off after 8:15, and the student will need a pass, please drop them off at door 26. This is door just past the STEM lab on the north side of the building. Our temporary office is located just inside door 26. This same door would be used if you need to pick your child up during the school day. We apologize for the inconvenience. We know that the building will look beautiful when the construction is finally completed.
I know that was a lot of information, and I apologize. I just want to wrap it up by thanking all of you for allowing us the opportunity to work with your children. I am continually amazed by our students each and every single day. Have a safe and restful weekend. As always, I am proud to serve as the Principal of East Middle School.
Go Rockets!
