3. What's Good in 109
Mr. Steckling presented the monthly What's Good in 109 report:
- The Shepard Baking Club had two very cool guests recently: Neil & Bonnie Goldberg from Nothing Bundt Cakes gave them a lesson in icing, and celebrity chef Gale Gand taught students how to make crepes!
- Science Curriculum Specialist Dan Yablonsky recently sat down with the comms team to answer some hard hitting questions for Walden kindergarteners about the impending cicada invasion.
- DPS 109 was represented by 8 young ladies who qualified for the IESA State Track & Field Meet. Congrats to Sadie, Emma, Annabelle, Maddie, Audrey, Bella, Maria & Naomi on their accomplishments!
- Kipling is our featured school, as the "Sole Mates" running club presented about their season!
- They are a new club this year that practiced all school year long, indoors and outdoors, through bad weather and all, to run their first 5K last weekend!
- Thank you to Nathan, Harper, Emily, Zane, Mrs. Sepper, and Mrs. Cacioppo for presenting!
4. Recognition - Staff Appreciation Week 2024
President Montgomery read a resolution on behalf of the Board thanking the entire DPS 109 staff for their hard work and dedication.
5. Superintendent's Report
Mr. Simeck recently got to enjoy the Walden Fun Run, a massive event put on by the PTO. It was very cool to see students working hard and the back field of the school packed with excitement.
He also attended the Arbor Day ceremony with our Early Learners. We are thankful to the Village of Deerfield that they donate a tree and partner with us on this initiative every year.
Middle schoolers recently took their annual overnight trip to Springfield, and got a tour of the state capitol from Deerfield's own Rep. Bob Morgan. We are very fortunate to have him as a partner and appreciate the opportunities he provides for our students.
We are so proud of the work that Shepard students and staff did on their Pack The Place charity basketball game against the Deerfield Police & Fire Departments earlier this year. They were recognized for their fundraising efforts at the most recent Village of Deerfield meeting.
We continue to face some issues with our aging infrastructure in some areas. A recent water main break put many of the bathroom at South Park out of order for about half of a school day. Huge credit to Dr. Faust and her team for keeping the building going and for our Buildings & Grounds team for ensuring a quick repair was in order. These are the kinds of issues we will continue to have serious discussions about as we move down the master facility planning path.
There's a busy summer of work ahead. There is ceiling & flooring work occuring at Caruso. There will also be construction of a new Buildings & Grounds facility on the southwest corner of the Caruso campus. This will allow B&G to move out of Shepard and for that space to be repurposed into instrucutional space in time for the 2025-2026 school year.
We recently honored our seven retirees at an all-district event. I want to say thank you to Mike Medow, Amy Karasick, Dawn Saarva, Juli Mages, Erika Yaffe, Ilene Grossman, and Sally Wyman for their years of service to the district.
Finally, earlier this evening, we were able to have a short ceremony dedicating a Little Free Library, along with a new bench and tree, to our dear friend Maureen Wener outside of Wilmot School. It was great to see so many in attendance to recognize the impact she had on this community and her loss is widely felt.
