Dear Friends and Neighbors,
Our tree was up weeks ago, Kool 108 has been playing Christmas music in my minivan, lists for gifts have been accumulating, skis are waxed – the Stroms are ready for Christmas and all things winter! I read something the other day about winter and thought it related very nicely to one of our favorite Swedish words, “fika.” Fika is taking a moment to slow down and appreciate the good things in life. To summarize, what I read was that winter is:
…the time to reflect on what has happened and what’s to come.
It is the understanding that silence possesses a kind of wisdom.
It is the bridge between letting go and embracing growth.
It is the knowledge that slowing down is necessary.
It is the season of rest, of making room for what will come.
Doesn’t that ring true? That Christmas time and the start of winter is when the world wants to go faster than ever with events and parties, the hustle and bustle. However, if we take a minute for fika it’s truly a chance to slow down and spend time with the people who matter most to us. So while we’ll have fun at the Gala (don’t forget to register here!), we’ll get our year end books done, we’ll do our Christmas shopping, we’ll celebrate with extended family over amazing food, we’ll make dozens and dozens of Christmas cookies – don’t forget to make time for fika to reflect on the year and embrace the quiet winter ahead.
