Friendship Circle
We are reinstating the "Friendship Circle". This group is to build a support for our staff an opportunity for us all to come together. To join it is $10 for dues, and with that money we recognize the staff that are part of the group for things like new babies, loss of loved ones, wedding, etc. Not only are we looking for members, but we are also looking for people who would like to be part of the team that helps to plan events, do recognitions, etc. Please reach out to Melinda if you would like to help out and/or simply join the circle as a member. Cash or checks are accepted!
Saturday School
Saturday School will be held this Saturday, February 8th from 8am-12pm at Webster Middle School. If you feel that it is best that a student attends on a regular basis, either the student or their family should complete the appropriate google form below, either the "Student Interest" or the "Parent/Guardian Interest" form. Teachers can also complete a "Teacher Recommendation" form for those students they believe would benefit from attending. Saturday school will begin to be used a alternative consequences for tardies to school beginning after February break, and it may also be used as alternatives to suspension in the future. All students who attend Saturday School are expected to be there on time and remain there until noon. Students are expected to come prepared with the necessary academic work that they need to complete, as well as with a charged chromebook.

We Need YOU!
We are still looking for 2 more teachers and several students to join our school council. This advisory committee will meet once a month once all members have been identified. The council will be comprised of the principal, parents of students attending the school, teachers, students, and "other persons drawn from such groups or entities as municipal government, business and labor organizations, institutions of higher education, human service agencies or other interested groups, including those from school-age child care programs". The role of the school council is to assist the principal in adopting educational goals for the school that are consistent with local educational policies and statewide student performance standards, identifying the educational needs of students attending the school, reviewing the annual school building budget, formulating a school improvement plan, and reviewing the student handbook each spring to consider changes in disciplinary policy to take effect for the following school year. The make up of the council encourages diverse perspectives in the formulation of a consensus plan. Poetry Contest Opportunity
The "Club del Libro en Español Worcester" is organizing a Poetry Contest among Spanish speaking young writers. Our aim is high-schoolers and college kids from Massachusetts and beyond. Last year we had poems from Venezuela, Dominican Republic and other countries. Most of the writers were from Worcester. This year they are expanding their program and have invited the students at Bartlett to enter the contest if they are interested as well. There is a $300.00 prize as well as the opportunity to have their poem recorded in the Talking Books Library at the Worcester Public Library if they are chosen as the winner. Please see the two flyers below for more information and contest rules.

National Interscholastic Athletic Administrators Association Scholar/Essay Application
Purpose of Scholarship:
In accordance with National Interscholastic Athletic Administrators Association’s (NIAAA) purpose to promote, facilitate, and increase the knowledge and understanding of the vital role of interscholastic athletics in the educational system, this scholarship program will foster and acknowledge the partnership between the NIAAA and secondary education.
The scholarships will recognize the distinguished scholastic, leadership, and citizenship attributes of high school student athletes, and the importance of high school athletics in each student’s life.
Criteria:
1. Applicant must be a Senior
2. Applicant must have achieved at least two (2) of the following:
a. minimum of B+ average;
b. Ranked in the top 25% of class;
c. ACT score of 24 or an SAT score of 1100 (Math and Reading)
3. Applicant must have participated in two sports for at least two years in each sport
4. Applicant must have earned at least one varsity letter in each of two sports
5. Applicant must complete attached scholar/essay application
6. Applicant must have a letter of recommendation from the high school athletic administrator/director
7. School athletic director must be an NIAAA member and a member of their respective state athletic administrators association
8. The principal or athletic director must sign the application to insure that the academic information submitted is accurate
9. Due Date: February 10, 2025. All applications MUST be submitted through FinalForms (see attached instructions).
MSSADA will award $500 to the two Massachusetts winners.
Testing
ACCESS Testing
This is the last week of ACCESS Testing for EL students. Students will continue to be pulled from classes to take these tests, please make sure to allow for makeup time, or give an exemption if you feel it is best, for the work that is missed during the time they are out of your classroom due to this testing. Ms. Doherty and Mr. Leonard will be administering these tests, and will provide an updated schedule of who is testing and when on a daily basis. You will receive the schedules via email each evening for the following day.
MCAS Science Retest Makeups
A small group of students will participate in the Biology MCAS Retest Makeup Test. Students will be called to their testing locations following the morning notices. Please remind the students to get a good night's sleep, have a good breakfast, come to school on time and prepared with their chromebook charged.
NAEP Testing - Select 12th Grade Students, age 17
The National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP) is an integral measure of academic progress across the nation and over time. It is the largest nationally representative and continuing assessment of what our nation’s students know and can do in various subjects, such as civics, mathematics, reading, and U.S. history. The program also provides valuable insights into students’ educational experiences and opportunities to learn in and outside of the classroom. NAEP is a congressionally mandated program administered by the National Center for Education Statistics (NCES), within the U.S. Department of Education and the Institute of Education Sciences.
Participating students will complete subject-area questions in mathematics or reading. Each student will be assessed in one subject only. Students will also complete a survey questionnaire. It takes participating students approximately 90 minutes to complete the long-term trend assessment and 2 hours to complete the field test assessment. This includes transition time, directions, and completion of a survey questionnaire. A broad range of accommodations are provided for students with disabilities and English learners.

World Language Department
Seal of Biliteracy
Bartlett will offer the Massachusetts State Seal of Biliteracy exam on March 3 and 4 for seniors who qualify. This prestigious award recognizes students who speak, listen, read, and write fluently in both English and another language. Recipients receive special honors at graduation, a seal marking this distinction on their transcript, and the possibilities of college credit and improved standing in the workforce as a bilingual employee.
There will be an informational meeting for all students who have signed up for the Seal of Biliteracy Test after school on Wednesday, February 26 in Ms. Masterson's room, Mobile 5.

"Screens off, Minds On" Competition
Starting February 10th and running until March 14th, students have the opportunity to be entered into a weekly raffle if they keep their phones away and never use their phones in class (this includes headphone use). A student who puts their phone in the classroom phone holder will receive two entries for that class period. Each week, one lucky winner will be chosen from the entries, and their teacher will also win a prize! Let’s keep those screens off and our minds focused!
How it Works (For Staff Only, Not to be Shared with Students):
Students who keep their phone away and never use their phone in class (including headphones) will have their names submitted by the designated block teacher to be entered in the raffle each day. A student who puts their phone in the classroom phone holder will receive two entries for that class period.

Scholarship season is here! All active scholarships have been posted on the Guidance Department's Google Classroom for the Class of 2025. As new scholarships come in the list will be updated. The Association of Teachers of Mathematics in Massachusetts will be awarding 3 scholarships for high school seniors.

Scholarships:
#1 - The Steve Yurek Award is presented to a senior at a vocational, technical, or agricultural high school for their creativity and problem solving in mathematics. Steve Yurek is a MA Math Hall of Fame Member; MTEL Math Analyst at Lesley University; and ATMIM Treasurer. Tell us about a project that involved creativity and problem solving in mathematics that you are the most proud of.
#2 - The Anne Elliot Smith Award is presented to a student willing to share their mathematical passion with others. This could be tutoring, involvement in math team, support in elementary schools, counselor at STEM camp, volunteer work, etc. Tell us about how you have shared your mathematical passions with others.
#3 - The J. Bryan Sullivan Award is presented to a student planning to continue to study mathematics after high school. J. Bryan was a teacher and math coach at Hudson High School, past president of both the Atlantic Regions Math League and ATMIM, and organizer of mathematics conferences at the local, state, and national levels. Tell us about how you envision to use the study of mathematics in your future plans.

Academic Points/Credit Recovery Due to Attendance
Families and students have received notices of point deductions due to absences in the report cards. Weekly emails have also been sent out each week for the past two weeks. Please encourage your student to attend the Saturday sessions to begin earning their points back. One Saturday session can replace up to 3 absences!

Reminder of the Handbook Policy
Loss of Points/Credit due to absences -
5-9 unexcused absences from a class will lose 10 points from their grade in that class for that quarter.
Grade/Credit Recovery Process:
Process 1 - Students can recover those lost points in the following quarter, if and only if, they have no more than 2 unexcused absences from that class during that quarter.
Process 2 (if last quarter of the course) - Students can work to recover lost points as soon as they reach their 5th unexcused absence by attending a 1.5 hour administrative detention session (one missed class per session). Students may attend multiple sessions to recover for multiple courses if needed. Students opting for these administrative detention sessions (ADPs) must designate which course they are attending for.
10 or more unexcused absences from a class will result in an automatic attendance failure for the quarter and receive a grade of a 40 (District Minimum Grade).
Grade/Credit Recovery Process:
Students may earn credit back by attending a 1.5 hour administrative detention session (one missed class per session). Students may attend multiple sessions to recover for multiple courses if needed. Students opting for these administrative detention sessions (ADPs) must designate which course they are attending for. They must attend enough ADP sessions to bring absences below 10 at which point the 10 point deduction will be enforced as noted above.

Attendance Policy
A public school district may excuse up to 7-day sessions or 14-half day sessions in any period of six months.
Based on this law, students may be approved for up to 7 excused absences in a 6 month period. Excused absences are defined as follows: Illness with medical documentation, A medical appointment that must be made during the school day, Observing a recognized religious holiday when the observance is during school, A family emergency, A planned absence for a personal or educational purpose that has been approved by the school, Educational disruption caused by a student's homelessness, unplanned hospitalization, or placement in foster care or a youth development center, Dismissal by the school nurse for illness.
**Note: Vacations will not be considered excused and should be avoided during days school is in session.
