Virtual Tutoring/Academic support
Big Brothers Big Sisters Strathcona is running a new pilot program this year that has been developed to offer children/youth/students support with their academic needs through some mentoring and academic support for the remainder of this school year.
This program is geared toward students in grades of 4-12. Mentors are asked to connect on line for 45-60 minutes once a week with their matched student for the current school year. The focus of these connections would be to support and encourage students in subject areas of math, science, literacy and any other related subject. Over time, this helps children and youth meaningfully improve their academic skills and become more confident in these abilities. Students and their mentor will log on virtually either from after school/evenings depending on parent and student schedules.
If you would like to register your child, or learn more about these academic support programs, please reach out to Tracy Lockhart, BBBS Strathcona Lead at 780-420-6352 or at tracy.lockhart@bigbrothersbigsisters.ca
WHAT IS SOLARO?
This year, more than ever before, the evolving K-12 education landscape is seeing a shift to digital delivery with an emphasis on engaging and relevant content. In keeping with the focus on 21st century learning and the changes necessitated by the current health concerns, Castle Rock Research is offering our families a fully digital solution, SOLARO.
SOLARO (Student Oriented Learning, Assessment, and Reporting Online) is a comprehensive digital resource that provides all the benefits and features of castle Rock’s printed guides with the added value of more robust content and many more practice questions. The same year-end tests from THE KEY Booklets are available in SOLARO, along with the released questions from the latest diploma exams.
Castle Rock Research is maintaining their policy of educational discounts by offering SOLARO at a rate of $20.00 per student for an annual license (compared to $199.00 retail price). While the cost of one print resource is approximately $20.00, one SOLARO licence will provide each student with unlimited access for up to ten courses for the entire school year, for roughly the same price of one print resource.
SOLARO eliminates the need to print and deliver physical products. We hope you will join us on a new path of helping students to reach their highest level of achievement. Please place your order online at https://schoolorders.solaro.com/3340 up to January 9, 2021.
Temporary Online Learning Format
Each class period starts with compulsory attendance, followed by a virtual instruction lesson led by the student’s in-school class teacher.
Student cameras must be turned on during all virtual instruction.
During the full-class Meet, teachers will provide information and instructions on tasks or assignments for students to complete throughout the rest of the class, as applicable.
Once the lesson is finished, students can turn their camera off to work on the related assignment or materials.
The teacher will be present the entire class period to answer questions and offer further instruction.
As needed, teachers can determine if additional, full-class or small-group Meets are needed throughout the class and will communicate times to students as needed, so they know when they are expected to participate.
Teachers will work in their regular classrooms to ensure all classes continue and the appropriate demonstration of course material occurs.
- Each class will also end with a 15-minute, full-class Meet to facilitate an instructional check-in with students and close out the class.

School and Transportation Fee Waiver Applications: Deadline extended
Elk Island Public Schools recognizes the global pandemic has put a strain on some families’ finances and available income can change quickly in the current situation. As such, the Division has extended the deadline for requesting a waiver of your 2020-21 school and transportation fees. If you encounter circumstances where you’re unable to pay your fees, you can apply to have fees waived by submitting an Application for a Waiver of Fees. Because of the pandemic, the new deadline is Feb. 15, 2021—if you’re new to EIPS, the deadline is the latter of Feb. 15, 2021, or 45 days after registration.
Each quarter—or trimester, as applicable—you’ll receive an email notification letting you know fees are posted on the PowerSchool Parent Portal. To access your fee information, go to “Student Fees” on PowerSchool. There you can view your fees and pay online using Visa, MasterCard or INTERAC Online—when available from your financial institution. All fees are due within 14 days of being posted. NOTE: School Fees apply to in-school learners only.
For more information about school fees, transportation fees, waivers and payment deadlines, visit http://www.eips.ca or contact Ms. Letby mailto:stephanie.letby@eips.ca or contact the school at 780-467-0044. https://www.eips.ca/schools/fees/waiver-of-fees
