From the Principal
February 2, 2024
Good People,
It is Black History Month!!
Did you ever wonder why February was chosen? According to Howard University History Professor Daryl Michael Scott, "Carter G. Woodson chose February for reasons of tradition and reform. It is commonly said that Woodson selected February to encompass the birthdays of two great Americans who played a prominent role in shaping black history, namely Abraham Lincoln and Frederick Douglass, whose birthdays are the 12th and the 14th, respectively" (Origins of Black History Month).

Plymouth's "Fund the Future - Give to the Max" Fundraiser Kicks-Off TODAY!
Each year the Plymouth Parent Association holds fundraisers to help provide additional opportunities for Plymouth Middle School students and staff. We are currently launching our ONLY fundraiser of the year. Our goal is to fund:
-
Prizes that reward positive behaviors: Supplies for ROAR store and Fun Fridays, where students can purchase items with their PAWS (good behavior) tickets;
-
Monthly activity nights and school spirit activities: Friday game show prizes, student dances, and more;
-
Teacher appreciation efforts: meals for conference nights; small treats for teacher appreciation week in May;
-
Flexible seating: Standing desks and other flexible seating options to better fit our students’ needs. We will start upgrading seating in the 8th grade wing, and as we fulfill those needs, move to the 6th and 7th grade wings.
Our targeted goal is to surpass $20,000, and every dollar helps. 100% of every dollar you donate will go directly to the Plymouth Parent Association, to support PMS students and staff. We have two requests of PMS families:
If you are able, please donate online here:
We can also accept checks mailed to: The Plymouth Parent
Association, P.O. Box 41087, Plymouth MN 55441
Please forward our fundraising campaign to friends, neighbors and family.
All students who return the fundraising ticket will be entered in weekly raffle for gift cards. The ticket requires a parent/guardian signature.
AVID
Hello PMS Families,
As you prepare for the 2024-25 school year, I invite your students to consider applying for the AVID program at PMS. AVID is a core class, in place of reading, that students are able to take in 7th and 8th grade.
AVID, which stands for Advancement Via Individual Determination, is a college readiness program designed to help students develop the skills they need to be successful in college. The AVID class focuses on writing, critical thinking, collaboration, reading, note-taking, study skills and college/career/motivational activities. Students are expected to keep an organized binder, use a planner and take notes in content classes throughout the week. Additionally, we are fortunate to have tutors in the AVID class twice per week. AVID is designed to increase overall academic performance, success in rigorous curriculum, and participation in activities at school, while also helping students become better educated, responsible citizens, and leaders in society.
To be considered for AVID, students must demonstrate a willingness to work hard, exhibit individual determination, and show positive behavior in all parts of the school day. AVID students often come from a family without a college-going tradition and/or represent student populations who are underrepresented on four-year college campuses.
Students apply to be in the AVID Elective course. The typical AVID student has average test scores, a GPA of 2.0 or higher, and does not need significant reading support. The application process includes a short written response, teacher recommendation and interview. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to reach out to Lisa Raymond at lisa_raymond@rdale.org or 763-504-7153. Thank you for all you do and your continued support of Plymouth Middle School!
