The transition to middle school can be a rough one. Moving from a smaller school setting to a larger one, progressing from having primarily one teacher to rotating classrooms with multiple teachers can be overwhelming for some students. That is why we work hard to thoughtfully transition our incoming 6th graders. We do a wide variety of welcoming activities, from open houses to WEB events... and all of those seem to be working.

Thanks to the outstanding job that our feeder school educators do to prepare our students for middle school, our kids have come in well prepared and ready to go. And with the transition activities, our 6th graders have started strong. Please take a look at the results from our parent survey regarding the transition: (153 parent/guardian respondents of 450 possible students)

• 75% of our respondents replied that their child attended the WEB event.

• 94% of respondents replied that their student was able to attend Material Pick-Up

• 20% of respondents had students who went to Jump Start and most found it beneficial

• 96% of respondents felt that we did enough to help their child transition to 6th grade

• 96% thought there was enough communication, though some would like to see it streamlined.

Our parents/guardians gave us some good critical feedback, which was appreciated. We will be using this data to help us plan for next year as we ready our next group of incoming 6th graders!

Please see (below) for an excerpt from our D303 Middle School Handbook (pg. 14) which outlines our expectations in regards to wearing IDs. Please encourage your child to wear their ID on a lanyard around their neck at all times while at school. Wearing IDs ensures that we know who everyone is in the building and allows us to effectively manage students during an emergency or crisis. We DO NOT want to have to charge our students who are not wearing ID’s, or assign a lunch detention for not wearing them. Students are provided 2 ID’s each school year at no charge.

STUDENT IDENTIFICATION CARDS

All students will be given individual identification (ID) cards. Students will be required to wear their ID cards at all times while on campus and display it upon request of any staff member.

Students are expected to carry their school ID with them to dances and extra-curricular activities and events. Any lost or stolen ID should be reported to Administration. ID’s may be retaken in the Learning Resource Center from 7:30 a.m. until 4:00 p.m. at a cost of $5.00 in the event a replacement is necessary.

The 6th-grade Service Learning classes will be doing fundraising over the coming weeks. The causes they have chosen include the National Cancer Society, CaringBridge, and Anderson Animal Shelter. If you would like to make a contribution, donations can be made during our6th-grade lunches. You may also drop off an envelope containing your donation at our main office. Please mark donations “care of Chrissy McPeak, WMS Service Learning Teacher” and include the name of the charity you wish to support. Thanks so much!

Wredling was proud to host two Kane County Judges, Judge Susan Clancy Boles and Judge Clint Hull who presented to each grade level on Tuesday. This was a great presentation and it helped support our SEL curriculum by discussing decision-making. They spoke about bullying and social media awareness to name a few topics. Consider following up on the presentation with your child. Here are a few questions to get you started:

1. What was a big takeaway from the presentation?

2. Have you thought about how you will use social media in the future?

3. What can you do if you are ever sent an inappropriate photo?

The sign‐up portal for Parent-Teacher will open beginning next week. We will be using Pick-A-Time again this year.

The Pick-A-Time portal is open.
It will promptly close OCTOBER 3rd at midnight. Once the portal closes parents will not be able to schedule a time for these conference dates.

Instead of larger group, or “team” meetings, conferences will be held with individual teachers. All conferences will be held either Zoom or in person in individual classrooms this year, and each conference will be eight minutes long with a four minute transition.

1. Login to your HAC (HOME ACCESS CENTER) Account

2. Click on the link for "Parent-Teacher Conference Scheduler"

3. Be sure to ONLY choose Q1 teachers!

A few notes about sign-up:

1. Parents should not feel obligated to sign-up for conferences. If your child is doing well at school, both academically and socially, then you might choose not to have a conference. (It does not make you a bad parent not to sign-up for conferences!) If your child is struggling, we would suggest that you do come to conferences!

2. You might only feel the need to meet one or a few teachers. There is no obligation to meet every teacher.

3. If you wish to visit the explore teachers, please sign-up to visit your child’s first-quarter explore teacher.

4. You can sign-up for a conference with a teacher only one time. Our student services team (counselors, social workers) will be available for conferences, as well. If you decide you need more time with a teacher, we are always willing to meet with you.

5. In some cases, a teacher may contact you in advance to set-up a conference time. That means we want to guarantee you a time to meet with your child’s teachers.

6. When you sign-up, try to sign-up for all conferences in a row. (Do not schedule gap times in the middle or you will be waiting around for a long time!)

7. You are welcome to have your RedHawks student with you during conferences! It is important that they hear what you hear. They are of the age when they are mature and responsible enough to be part of the conversation whether via Zoom or in-person.

Teachers are losing valuable time to student tardies. Our tardy expectations are in full force at Wredling and we need your help! If your student receives a tardy, please talk to them about the importance of being on time and help them to problem-solve how to get them to their class on time.

“Let’s Finish Our Homework Together”

Saints Helping Hawks has started! Students will have an opportunity to receive help on homework/projects… EVERY Tuesday and Thursday… EVERY week.

We meet in the LRC from 3:40 until 4:40 every Tuesday and Thursday.

Wredling certified staff will facilitate this after school activity. They support high school tutors in whatever work students need. We provide a snack or students may bring their own light, neat after school snack from home.

Students are invited and encouraged to attend at least one session each week for help with homework and projects.

After studying, bus transportation to a nearby elementary school will be available. We hope this transportation will be helpful for those parents who are still at work and cannot pick up their student at Wredling at 4:40.
