MESSAGE FROM THE SUPERINTENDENT
As we wrap up another school year full of learning, meaningful experiences and opportunities for our students, I would like to reflect on one of my favorite examples of a community that prioritizes its youngest members.
The Maasai warriors of East Africa are known for their unique greeting to one another: “And how are the children?” The response is typically, “The children are well,” which implies that if the children are well, the community is also well.
The Roseburg community has a strong history of supporting students, from business partnerships and in-kind donations to career exploration opportunities and classroom volunteers. We simply would not be able to provide our students with the incredible experiences they get without this community’s support. From the bottom of my heart, thank you for the many ways you help to support our students.
At the same time, we know that many of our students continue to struggle with attendance, mental health care access, poverty and other factors that reflect the challenges our community faces every day. In addition, our students continue to learn in outdated facilities that lack the basic functions, like air quality systems, that many of their peers in other communities around the state and country take for granted.
None of these issues comes with an easy fix. We will have to continue to work together as a community to find solutions. As we look back through history, we discover that societies thrive when their focus is on providing for children. It makes sense, because children not only represent our future but are the greatest investment we can make for the betterment of our community. The support our community provides to our children now directly impacts whether our community withers or thrives in the future.
When we talk about a need for more health care services, more retail options, more recreational activities, etc. — it all rests on whether Roseburg is family friendly, business friendly and community friendly. And that all hinges on the quality of our schools.
There are noteworthy achievements happening in our classrooms every day. By aligning and strengthening our instructional practices, we are making gains in reading and math scores. Our strong focus on ensuring ninth-grade students are on track to graduate will continue to nudge graduation rates back to record highs. Our wonderful partnerships with Umpqua Community College and local industry leaders are increasing the number of career pathways available to students, providing access to family-wage jobs right here in our own community.
I am so proud of the efforts of our students, families, staff and community to help Roseburg be the best it can be. We’re on the right track; watching our graduates cross the stage with happy and proud faces this past weekend is proof. But it’s up to us as a community on whether we can maintain and accelerate this momentum.
As we close out this school year and look to the future, I am excited to continue working with everyone in our community to make sure all the children are not only well but thriving.
Thank you for your support of our students, our staff, and of our amazing community. We have something uniquely wonderful here.
Wishing you a safe and happy summer,
Jared Cordon
Superintendent

HIGHLIGHTS FROM AROUND THE DISTRICT
ParentSquare is here!
We are preparing to transition to ParentSquare as our main communication platform for the 2024-25 school year. The goal for switching to this platform is to unify our communication tools. In addition, ParentSquare is known for its robust engagement tools that increase parent/guardian involvement, leading to improved student outcomes.
Please note that beginning July 1, 2024, ParentSquare will replace our current OneCall system AND Remind. Initially, the platform will be used for school-wide and district-wide alerts and notifications, attendance notifications, and communications between staff and families.
You will automatically receive all messages from your school and the district but will need to register your account to participate in two-way communication features, access training, and update your preferences.
You can learn more about ParentSquare on our website at https://www.roseburg.k12.or.us/families/parentsquare.
Nutrition Services makes updates to school meals
We are thrilled to share some updates from the Roseburg School District Nutrition Services team, aimed at enhancing the school meal experience for our students across all grade levels.
Roseburg High School Menu Expansion:
Our high school is now equipped with brand-new kitchen equipment and stations, allowing us to expand our menu offerings significantly. With this upgrade, students can look forward to a variety of new and delicious options, including bowls and wraps, crafted to meet diverse tastes and nutritional needs. Stay tuned for exciting additions that will make lunchtime even more enjoyable!
Expanded Salad Bar Offerings:
We are also rolling out expanded salad bar offerings across our schools. These enhancements provide a wider selection of fresh, healthy ingredients, allowing students to customize their salads and enjoy a nutritious meal every day. The new options aim to encourage healthy eating habits and provide students with more variety and flavor in their diets.
Meatless Entrée Options for Elementary Schools:
In response to growing demand for plant-based choices, we’ve introduced new daily meatless entrée options for our elementary schools. These nutritious and tasty alternatives ensure that all students have access to balanced meals that cater to different dietary preferences and needs. We're excited to offer these healthy choices that support our commitment to student wellness.
RPS Nutrition Services is dedicated to providing high-quality, nutritious meals that support the health and well-being of our students. We look forward to seeing our students enjoy these new and improved meal options!
Eastwood students experience carpentry
Students from Eastwood Elementary School had an exciting opportunity to explore carpentry at Roseburg High School. Led by their teacher, Jane Barrow, they tackled the task of crafting planter boxes. RHS woodshop teacher Gene Castillo organized high school students from his class to assist the younger ones. Together, they glued, nailed and hammered, learning valuable woodworking skills along the way.
Books on the way to K-5 students
Roseburg School District is excited to participate in the Kids Read Now reading program this summer. Every K-5 student in our district will have the opportunity to receive eight books at home in the mail during the break — for free!
Designed and proven to maintain reading skills over the summer, Kids Read Now is a nonprofit organization focused on best practices for reading engagement and growth. Before the final day of school, our teachers will be helping students choose eight books at their reading level. Students will also receive a bonus creative writing book containing illustrations that they can use as writing prompts.
Parents will be receiving information soon from their schools. Contact your child’s school if you have any questions. More information can also be found at portal.kidsreadnow.org or in the Kids Read Now app.
Our school district is able to participate in this program thanks to grant funding from the Oregon Early Literacy Success Initiative.
Remembrance. Honor. Gratitude. Tradition.
Thank you to our Fir Grove students for taking the time to carefully and respectfully place flags at the Roseburg National Cemeteries in honor of Memorial Day.
Proud CNA graduates recognized
We couldn’t be more proud of the latest class of Certified Nursing Assistant Level I students! Nine students completed the program this year and were honored in a special ceremony at Roseburg High School.
The CNA Level I program is a partnership between Roseburg School District and Umpqua Community College. Students complete intensive dual credit coursework at RHS and also spend hours completing practicums in local healthcare settings. Next, they’ll have the opportunity to take the State Boards and earn their official CNA I license.
Congratulations to Kaitlyn Alexander, James Allen, Yazmin Barrios Flores, Helena Garcia, Nevaeh Hernandez, Alena Howard, Anika Pederson, Kevin Porter and Kamryn Wattman!
Hucrest students demonstrate citizenship
In the spirit of cultivating the character trait of "citizenship," students at Hucrest Elementary made meaningful impacts throughout the month of May! During Child Development Specialist Hugh Heinrichsen’s classes, students dedicated 30 minutes to beautifying their campus by pulling weeds and sprucing up the courtyards.
Celebrating milestones together
Before graduation, Roseburg High School seniors took a nostalgic walk down memory lane with a Grad Walk Parade at their elementary schools!
This special tradition provides so much value for everyone involved:
For our seniors, it’s a moment of reflection and gratitude, marking the end of one chapter and the start of another. They get to revisit their roots and celebrate how far they've come, while also serving as role models for the younger students.
For our elementary school students, it’s an inspiring and motivational experience! Seeing the graduates walk through the halls shows them the exciting future that awaits if they stay focused and dedicated. It makes their own educational journey feel tangible and within reach.
This parade is more than just a walk — it’s a celebration of community, continuity, and the incredible journey of learning. It also gives our wonderful teachers a chance to see the long-term impact of their hard work.
Get a head start on school registration
Online enrollment for Roseburg School District is open for the 2024-25 school year. All new, returning and re-enrolling students will be required to enroll online to begin the registration process.
Families can access a comprehensive guide to the online registration process, including necessary documents and parent portal links, at the district's website: https://bit.ly/3vvkF3D (be sure to select the 2024-25 enrollment option). This initial step is important for students of all grades, leading to final in-person registration in the fall.
Roseburg School District emphasizes foundational learning in reading, writing and math while offering students a range of experiences and opportunities to spark their love for education.
For students and families who prefer online school, Roseburg Virtual School serves students in grades K-8. RVS students are taught by licensed Roseburg teachers and have the option of participating in fun and enriching in-person experiences throughout the school year.
Families with questions about the online enrollment process are encouraged to contact their child’s school for more information.

Exploring Umpqua Valley nature
Third-grade students throughout our school district had an amazing time at the Eastwood Nature Days event held at Eastwood Elementary School.
Students explored a variety of stations to learn about the natural world of the Umpqua Valley with hands-on activities, guided explorations and expert-led sessions. From stream tables and birding walks, to a deeper dive into the early Umpqua days with Native American storytelling, students learned from many of our community partners.
Umpqua Watersheds is excited to expand this wonderful event next year with new teacher education opportunities and partnerships with additional presenters. They also aim to customize more sessions to complement the teacher-requested curriculum.
Thank you to everyone who made this event a success!
Chickens, goats, and farm fun
Umpqua Valley Farm to School has been organizing field trips for our district's elementary school students. Students are being exposed to the world of agriculture through hands-on activities like planting seeds and feeding livestock.
Students took trips this spring to Valadez Organic Produce, where they learned about chickens, goats, and organic fruit and vegetable production. They also ventured to Brosi's Sugartree Farms where they got cooking lessons.
Career Day sparks aspirations
Students from both Sunnyslope and Green elementary schools had the opportunity to explore a variety of careers through interactive presentations and hands-on experiences provided by our wonderful community partners.
Events like Career Day are crucial for our students' development, offering them a glimpse into potential career paths and inspiring them to dream big about their futures. These interactions help build aspirations, pique curiosity, and provide practical insights into different professions.
For our community businesses and organizations, participating in Career Day is equally important. It strengthens their connection with the community, showcases their dedication to education, and allows them to invest in the future of our youth. By sharing their expertise and passion, they are shaping the next generation of professionals, leaders, and innovators.
Special thanks to Douglas County Sheriff’s Office Deputy Justin Moe, one of our school resource officers, for organizing the day! And a huge THANK YOU to all our community partners, teachers and staff for making this event a huge success!
