School Improvement Council (SIC) Mental Health Minute
The SIC Social-Emotional Committee is providing support for parents/guardians with an evidence-based 5-part video series, adults can use to teach their kids important mental health and coping skills. Over the next 5 weeks, parents/guardians may choose to watch the brief video each week with their children. The first video addresses the importance of children understanding their feelings.
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (2023), the number of adolescents experiencing poor mental health is increasing. Schools, parents, and guardians can establish protective relationships with students to help them manage life’s daily challenges to protect their mental health.
CDC’s Youth Risk Behavior Surveillance Data Summary & Trends Report: 2011-2021 [PDF – 10 MB] highlights concerning trends about the mental health of U.S. high school students.
- In 2021, more than 4 in 10 (42%) students felt persistently sad or hopeless and nearly one-third (29%) experienced poor mental health.
- In 2021, more than 1 in 5 (22%) students seriously considered attempting suicide and 1 in 10 (10%) attempted suicide.
The 5-part video series contains age-appropriate curated tools to provide resiliency education, which can be a preventative approach to emphasize mental health and wellness education for all students to prevent poor mental health and suicide among our future high school students. It is our hope that parents/guardians will take 5 minutes to watch the new video each week over the next 5 weeks.
