DEAN OF STUDENTS' UPDATE
Hello Eagle Crest Families!
With Thanksgiving Break approaching, I want to wish all our students, families, and staff a week filled with rest, connection, and safe travels. Your dedication to our school community is deeply appreciated, and we are truly grateful for your support.
During the break, I encourage everyone to embrace the power of reading. Research consistently shows that just 20 minutes of reading daily can significantly boost academic success. Currently, every student is participating in our school-wide Reading Challenge, with a collective goal of 250,000 minutes by Winter Break. We’ve already reached an impressive 107,000 minutes—let’s keep the momentum going! Over the break, students can contribute by reading daily and logging their minutes using this Google Form.
To foster a love for reading, every student who logs their minutes will be entered into a drawing for a free book! This initiative, generously sponsored by our PTO, celebrates and rewards our dedicated readers weekly.
Additionally, students can participate in the district-wide myON & Sora Thanksgiving Break Reading Challenge. Through ClassLink on their iPads, students can access myON’s library of over 7,000 digital books or explore nearly 37,000 ebooks, audiobooks, and magazines through Sora. These platforms are a great way for students to discover new genres and broaden their literary horizons during the break.
Wishing you a joyful Thanksgiving Break!
All the best,
Lindsey Cheney

PTO UPDATE
Dear Eagle Crest Families,
During this season of gratitude, I am so thankful for our community of Eagle Crest students, families, and staff.
I am looking forward to Thanksgiving and the start of the holiday season for many of us. To make our lives a little easier during this busy time of the year, a few helpful hints:
PTO surveyed our amazing teachers and staff to find out what supplies they want and treats they love! If you’re looking for ideas, check out the Staff Wishlist. Gifts are never expected; drawings and notes from students and family are treasured by staff!
Do you own a business or want to support small businesses? Make sure to visit PTO’s Facebook and Instagram accounts this Saturday, November 23. We will have a post inviting you to share your website and let Eagle Crest families know about your work!
Instead of a restaurant night in December, PTO has partnered with See’s Candy to raise funds! Chocolates or peanut brittle could be a great gift for the friend who has everything. Please share the website with friends and family near and far; they can use this link to have goodies shipped throughout the country. December 6 is the last day to order.
Wishing you and yours a very happy Thanksgiving.
Gratefully,
Katie Lancaster, PTO President

LOST & FOUND
Is your child missing something? Our Lost and Found is overflowing with items once again! Please drop by the Main Office before or after school to claim your belongings, these items will be donated soon. Consider labeling your child's coats, gloves, layers, lunch boxes/containers, and water bottles with their names – it can make a significant difference! While we do try to check items for names, many items remain unclaimed due to the lack of labels.
MWEBAZA FOUNDATION UPDATE
Did you know that Eagle Crest has a partnership with a school in Uganda?!
The Mwebaza Foundation is an educational organization that partners schools in Colorado with schools in Uganda. Interested in learning more? Check out their website: https://www.mwebaza.org/
Happy Fall! This fall our Colorado partner schools are busy learning and having fun! Our Colorado schools and clubs continue to learn about Ugandan culture, history, music, and art through books, presentations, videos, and discussions. Three of our clubs have been focusing on Quality Education (United Nations Sustainable Development Goal #4) and how there are barriers to education throughout the world including in their own communities.
With our Mwebaza Day Celebrations coming up at all elementary schools starting the end of February, our Colorado clubs have started working on their part of the programs including songs, dances, and questions to ask their friends. We will be connecting over a live video call and parents are welcome to join the call too!
Students in Colorado and Uganda have been learning from each other about environmental issues in both places. Some students have been learning about the importance of renewable energy with a focus on Solar Energy. This fall 1st - 4th graders at a Colorado school made solar ovens as part of their learning activity. When we return to Uganda in June, St. Paul School will also learn about the benefits of Solar Energy and will make their own solar ovens! At another Colorado partner school, 4th and 5th graders are studying local environmental issues in their community that also relate to issues across the globe.
Parents: Did you know that there are 43 spoken languages in Uganda? Most of them are indigenous languages that belong to one of the 56 local tribes. Students often speak their native language at home, but learn to read, write, and speak English at school. This is a rule that was implemented during Britain's colonial rule of Uganda and although they gained independence in 1962, they are still required to teach in English at school.
Ask your students these questions:
- Why is using solar energy important throughout the world?
- Do you think learning English in Uganda schools is important? Why or why not?
- What other language would you like to learn? And why?
- What is a fun thing you have learned this year about your friends in Uganda?
- What is something you would like them to know about you?
(if you want to share the answers you get please send them to hillari@mwebaza.org)
