SPOTLIGHT
on New Milford Schools

Message from Superintendent, Dr. Janet Parlato
Dear New Milford Public Schools Families, Faculty, Staff, and Community,
Here we are at the end of January, where the weather has been fairly quiet for us so far. We are lucky to have so many exciting and joyful events taking place across all of our schools in January. You will see these happenings throughout the pages of this month’s edition of the Spotlight on New Milford Schools. Please enjoy the stories about and photos of our students in action in every grade level!
The late fall and winter seasons also bring our annual school district budget development presentations and meetings. Our school administrators and central office department directors work hard each year to present requests that meet the needs of our students and our schools while maintaining a stance of fiscal responsibility. Each of the presentations for the 2025-26 school and department budgets can be found at this link. On Wednesday, January 22, the Board of Education adopted a budget following all of the school and department presentations. The Board of Education adopted budget presents a 3.93% increase over the 2024-25 district budget. We look forward to explaining to families what is contained in the Board of Education adopted budget over the upcoming weeks. The Board of Education adopted budget is then presented to the Town Council and Board of Finance for their consideration in late February. The final step in the budget process is the Town-Wide Referendum in May. As always, please reach out with any questions you might have about the budget or budget process as we move on through the months.
Please enjoy the rest of this month’s Spotlight! Thank you for your continued support of our students and our schools.
Sincerely,
Janet P. Parlato, Ed.D.

Report Cards in Powerschool
As we enter the mid year semester mark for New Milford High School and Schaghticoke Middle Schools, this is just a reminder that when semester report cards come out at the end of January, Parents and Students need to use their browser on a computer, phone or tablet to see their report cards. The PowerSchool App does not work with our third party software program that creates our report cards. Use any internet device to go newmilfordps.powerschool.com/public to see all report cards. If you have any issues with your Powerschool Parent/Student account, please reach out to the front office of your child’s school.

TOTY Colleen Peterson in the News
Colleen Peterson, who has been teaching math at New Milford High School for the past 20 years and helped start the New Milford school district's Math Honor Society has been named District Teacher of the Year for the 2024-25 school year. New Milford, Conn. Wednesday, December 11, 2024.
“Learning is a messy process,” the 44-year-old New Milford teacher said. “I like to remind my students when you first learned to walk… you wobbled, you fell down, you didn’t walk in a straight line. And then you practiced it and kept trying and little by little, you got better to where you’re doing it without even thinking about it. And I try to equate that to math.”
'Shark Tank'-themed Event Comes to NMHS
High schoolers presented business plans to local business sharks. Students in several classes at New Milford High School recently went head-to-head with local business sharks. The sharks – several local business owners, each with impressive resumes – participated in a “Shark Tank”-like interactive activity in several Introduction to Business classes for teacher Eileen Wargo, a NMHS graduate. The students hoped to reel in the sharks to invest in their mock business or product.

Mock Trial
In January SMS’s Mock Trial program held its Final Trial with remarkable success. Throughout the program, students learned about the legal system, including how to prepare and present cases, while developing critical thinking and public speaking skills. Students were divided into teams, with each team representing either the prosecution or the defense, allowing them to understand different perspectives of a trial and how the courts work. The Final Trial featured students showcasing their hard work and dedication, while getting to immerse themselves in the various roles and lawyers and witnesses. Overall, the Mock Trial program not only taught students about the law but also built their confidence and communication skills. A big thank you to Dr. Tomasello for acting as our judge, Mrs. Stoughton acting as our bailiff, and all of the teachers who acted as our jury! Congrats to all participants- you did an amazing job!
News from Team 6 Red
The students in Mr. Loubier’s social studies classes created their own Greek city-states. Many went above and beyond to create 3D models, paintings, and sculptures of elements of Greek culture with help from the Village Center for the Arts.
Mrs. Bernard’s reading students rang in the New Year by setting a few goals for themselves. Currently, they are wrapping up the Deep Study of Character Unit and looking forward to Tapping the Power of Nonfiction.
CAS Middle Level Leader Conference
On Friday, January 17th, members of Student Leaders for a Change attended the CAS Middle Level Leader Conference at Southern Connecticut State University. SMS student leaders had the opportunity to interact and collaborate with student leaders from all over the state of Connecticut. Over 75 middle schools were represented at this conference! Students were able to select breakout sessions that ranged from team building through legos to effective public speaking and responsible decision making. The keynote speaker, Mike Nelson spoke about resilience, character, and achieving success through purpose-driven leadership. Students are excited to put this learning into action at SMS in the near future.
Incoming 6th Grade Open House
On Thursday, January 23rd we welcomed our incoming 6th grade students and families to SMS for an evening event. This event was largely designed by student leaders, under the guidance of Mr. Boucher. Our future students and their families got to learn more about 6th grade classes and the bell schedule, practice opening locks, tour the building, and visit a club and activity fair in the cafeteria. Our student leaders were on hand to answer questions for our guests. It was great to see so many smiling faces at SMS from both current students and staff and our incoming students and families. Shout out to our student leaders and Mr. Boucher for a wonderful job planning and executing an outstanding event!
It’s Project-Palooza in Social Studies!
The winter months have brought the project season to the Social Studies department!
Students in 6th grade assumed the role of archaeologists uncovering newly discovered city-states and were able to craft and create their own city-state using information they learned about how Ancient Greeks in city-states had lived. From temples to full cities models and posters including every detail, the imagination and originality seen in these projects was awesome!
7th grade wrapped up learning all about Ancient Egypt by having students pick a topic within Ancient Egypt they wanted to learn more about and create a project outlining the importance of that thing to Ancient Egypt’s culture and how it helped to shape and form the world as we know it today! Creativity was on full view with the range of 3D models, digital models, posters, videos, and other various projects.
After learning about the American Revolution, 8th grade students created newspaper articles where they profiled the life of specific individuals from the Revolutionary-Era. Students could choose individuals who reflected both sides of the war and a number of various roles played throughout the war such as generals, spies, and others!
Project-Based learning is a major cornerstone to Social Studies as a whole. It helps students develop their inquiry and critical thinking skills, and we love seeing what our students create!

Robotics Clubs
In our Robotics clubs, Students are actively engaged in learning to construct and program VEX Go Robots as part of the after-school Robotics Club. VEX integrates elements of STEM, Computer Science, and Robotics. Teams of two students work collaboratively to build a rover, followed by programming the rover to complete various challenges within the classroom. One such challenge involves programming the rover to recognize colors and navigate a maze based on the colors it detects. Students appreciate the opportunity to tackle these challenges in an enjoyable and supportive environment.
Crochet Club
Our 4th Graders in Crochet Club are learning the basic stitches of crochet through guided instruction, practice, and mentorship. Each session will focus on building upon the learning from prior sessions with students developing patience, creativity, and a finished project.
Chess Club
In our Chess Club students are learning the basics of playing chess in a structured environment with other students who share similar interests. We are very proud of our 5th grade chess mentors that help our younger students improve their game
Basketball Intramurals

New Year Whole-School Assembly
We kicked off our new year with a whole-school assembly immediately after arrival the first morning back to do the pledge, moment of silence, and morning announcements, together💥 Students learned about what perseverance is, how it can be applied to the midyear iReady, and together we revisited expected behaviors for school and on the bus. Pre-K 💓 Yoga
Pre-K has been enjoying their yoga classes with Mrs. Dawn Delpha who visits the school once a week to teach. They are using the practice of yoga for breathing, calming, reflection, and compassion.
Mrs. Burger's Excel students love yoga day!
Word Wizard Wednesday
Did you know that NES has "Word Wizard Wednesday" ? This is an opportunity for our students to learn two new words a month. Thanks to the efforts of Mrs. Filogomo, our students have learned the definitions and how to use the following words for January: "accumulate" and "assemble." Two books staff shared with the students were The All Together Quilt by Lizzy Rockwell and The Boy who Harnessed the Wind by William Kamkwamba.
NES Celebrates Halfway Hawaiian Day!
Second Graders celebrated Halfway Hawaiian Day! This means that we are halfway through the school year ! It's a fun event that our second graders anticipate with excitement. They board a pretend plane, travel to Hawaii, and there's lots of fuss and fanfare (and fun for all!).
Collecting Plastic with LHTC
NES is continuing to collect plastic to make an upcycled bench. Here is a photo provided by LHTC who are helping us with our goal! This collection weighed 61 pounds!
KidSight Screenings and Fun Winter Assemblies
The Lion's Club once again came and screened our students who "opted in" for the KidSight screening and we are grateful for this service.
Here at NES we are trying to ward off the cold winter blues by scheduling lots of fun and educational things. We have a whole slew of assemblies coming up and our classes are looking forward to their spring field trips.

Food & Nutrition News
Our department is dedicated to bring more local farm items to the school lunch program and we have found a way to do it in the traditional non growing seasons in Connecticut. We have started to purchase Non GMO, Pesticide Free and Ready to Eat Hydroponic Lettuce.
Hydroponic Lettuce is grown in a nutrient-rich water solution without soil. We are currently using the hydroponic lettuce at the High School in “Grab & Go Salads”, which are are available daily.
There are different types of lettuce and some are higher in nutrients than others. One cup of lettuce
(any type), has 0 grams of Cholesterol/Fat, Folate, Vitamin A and Vitamin K. Our menus (K-12) offers a salad daily. Please try them !
