McGovern News!
September 16, 2022
We just finished our first full week at McGovern. Our students, faculty, and staff are settling into the new school year. As a school, we have worked this year to provide explicit teaching of expectations and routines across settings. Our students have done such a nice job in generalizing these skills! We know the beginning of the year also brings new routines for families.
As we move into the year, students will be taking home books and reading at home. At this age, it can be difficult for students to read without a chair and surface. Below are some pointers for families to consider when setting up their reading routines:
- Find an area with good lighting
- Select a desk, table, or other sturdy objects to serve as your workspace
- Make sure the workspace is free of noise and distractions
- If possible help your child make the workspace their own based don't their interests
- Have items they will need available in their space
- Ensure that there's room for two so that someone can sit with them.
These are suggestions and some of these may not work for your family. A reading or workspace needs to work for your individual family and student, and should not take over your home! The benefits of establishing a space at home to engage in academics help students develop academic and executive functioning habits and may even engage some of our more reluctant readers by having their own special space.
Best,
Amy McDonald, Principal
Challenger Division Fall Ball
*Medway Youth Baseball is proud to build on the success of the spring Challenger Division season by continuing Challenger Fall Ball in 2022! Any individual with a physical or intellectual disability may participate. If an individual can participate in the traditional youth baseball or softball program with reasonable accommodations, they should do so. The Challenger Division typically accommodates boys and girls ages 4-18, or up to age 22 if still enrolled in school.

Back to School Night
While this is not the time for you to ask specific questions about your child, you can always set up a time to check in with the teacher. So that you can fully participate, we ask that children do not attend the event.
Preschool and Kindergarten sessions begin at 5:30 pm and first grade begins at 6:45 pm. If you have any questions, please reach out to your child's teacher.

MEPTO T-shirt Orders

Memorial:

We would highly recommend that students get a t-shirt. Not only are they worn for field trips and field days, but often teachers set up a class t-shirt day. This builds great community for students.
We would never want anyone to not have a t-shirt, so if you are in financial need of a t-shirt please reach out directly to Amy McDonald, Principal of McGovern (amcdonald@medwayschools.org) or John Kelley, Principal of Memorial (jkelley@medwayschools,org).
Volunteers!
If you are interested in coming to school as a Mystery Reader or only for one event, you do not need to complete the training. The training is intended for regular volunteers in the school setting. If you are interested in being a more regular volunteer, please complete the training and then we will reach back with volunteer opportunities.

T.H.R.I.V.E. Speaker Series
This school year, Medway T.H.R.I.V.E. is offering opportunities for parents/guardians to learn how they can promote student self-efficacy and sleep. Joanie Geltman, MSW, will share best practices for growing children’s self-efficacy, and Judith Owens, MD, will help parents and guardians understand the impact of sleep on academic and athletic achievement. Full event details can be found here.
Caregiver Connections and Support Group
A high percentage of Medway youth are learning to manage their mental health concerns, and most are supported by a parent or caregiver. Those caring for children with mental health concerns often feel overwhelmed with figuring out how to best support their loved ones while finding time for self-care. Paula LeBlanc, Famly Partner at You Inc., will facilitate a monthly group to support caregivers of children with mental health concerns and create peer connections. The first meeting will occur at the Medway Public Library on September 28 at 6:30 PM. For a complete meeting schedule, topic descriptions, and to register, please click here.

Diagnostic Assessments
In the coming weeks, we will begin our diagnostic assessments for students. Below is a description of the assessments that our students participate in. Please note that these assessments are used to help teachers identify students' strengths and areas of opportunity and they use the data to plan small and whole group instruction.
iReady Reading and Math Diagnostic Assessments:
The information about your K and 1st grade child’s current level of performance, both their strengths and opportunities for growth, are immediately available to their teachers from the iReady Reading and Math diagnostic assessment. Teachers will use this data to inform their daily instruction and a "path" in math is created for each student at their level that teachers use during math instruction and/or their intervention block.
DIBELS (Dynamic Indicators of Basic Early Literacy Skills):
Students in K and 1 will also participate in DIBELS. DIBELS is a set of quick probes to assess students acquisition of foundational literacy skills. Teachers will use this information to plan literacy instruction.
