Weekly Family Message | August 30, 2024
Message from Ms. Hurst, Principal
Dear Pirate Family,
Thank you all for a great first week of school! The first days of a new school year always have twists and turns as we all get back into the swing of things.
Each day, the carpool line will move faster, bus routes will become more predictable, schedule changes will be completed, and everyone will settle into new routines.
Here on campus, we have been focused on processes that will promote a safe and orderly school environment. I have personally met with each class to share expectations. As I told them all, I have high expectations for our students, and I know they will rise to meet them.
In this week's newsletter, I will share some of those processes with you, and we welcome and appreciate your support as we implement practices designed to keep your students safe-- emotionally, physically, and academically.
If you have any questions or feedback, please reach out. My email is melissahurst@johnston.k12.nc.us.
Enjoy this long Labor Day weekend, and we will see you on Tuesday, Pirates!
Melissa Hurst, principal
Student Schedule Updates
The #1 question we are receiving right now is, "When will the counselor make the requested schedule change?"
Please know that our counselors are working diligently to make schedule changes. While the transition to Infinite Campus has added another layer to the process, we do have a system. We asked all students who wanted a change to first complete the Google Form.
Since Monday, counselors have prioritized creating schedule for students who do not have one and adding courses to schedules with holes. They then moved to corrections for students who have already taken or passed the course.
Finally, they started on other change requests. Please note, not all requests will result in a change. We will only change schedules for one of these reasons:
Course was previously taken and passed
Increase in rigor (where available seats permit the change)
Hole in schedule
Student does not meet the prerequisites for the course
Student is scheduled for same course twice
Please know that counselors are responding more slowly to phone calls and emails because they are trying to make changes as quickly as possible. They are not ignoring you 🙂
We anticipate completing all changes this week.
Teachers also know and understand that schedules can and will change during the first ten days, and they will work with any student who has to add or drop a course.
Transportation
The #2 question we are receiving right now is, "When will my child be added to the bus?"
All individuals who received school bus transportation last school year, or have requested bus transportation for the 2024-2025 year prior to Tuesday, August 13, 2024, your child’s bus assignment has been completed and is ready to be reviewed in the Edulog Parent Portal app.
If you are interested in viewing your child’s bus assignment today - including your child’s school bus number, stop times, and bus location - you must download the Edulog Parent Portal app on your smart device.
To download the Edulog app, please:
Download the Edulog Parent Portal from the Google Play Store or the Apple App Store.
Search for “Edulog Parent Portal” and choose the app with the white bus on the teal background. Once you have the app downloaded, sign up using your email address.
To register your student(s) you will simply need to:
Click on the STUDENT LIST tab by selecting the “+” icon or the ADD STUDENT button.
Follow the prompts. You must have the following 5 pieces of information to ensure security.
Student’s First Name (spelled correctly)
Student’s Last Name (spelled correctly)
School to which the student is assigned.
Student’s date of birth
Student ID Number, assigned by the school district.
Learn more about the Edulog Parent Portal here!
We are excited to begin the new year and look forward to safely transporting your student(s) to school and back home!

Attention!
- Beginning on Tuesday- We will begin marking tardies to class. Please make sure your student is in the building by 7:15. Late check-ins must come through Student Services.
- Dress Code- Please make sure you and your student have reviewed dress code expectations. When students are not in compliance with the dress code, our goal is to get them quickly into compliance and back to class.
- Carpool- Please use carpool. Parents bringing students to school in the morning should not be dropping off at the front of the school.
Carpool
Carpool Information
The carpool drop off requires everyone to drive behind the school where they will be directed by on-duty staff to one of three drop off lines. Students are not permitted to leave their vehicle until 6:35 am. Students will not be allowed to enter the building prior to that time. Students can not be dropped off prior to 6:35 am. Students will be given a signal indicating when they can exit their vehicle. Upon entering the school through the middle gym door, students will be screened at the open gate system and directed to the Auxiliary Gym where they will remain until the 7:00 am bell. After dropping off students, drivers are not permitted to pass other vehicles. Drivers are to remain behind the car in front unless directed otherwise by a staff member. Just like the morning carpool drop off, the afternoon carpool pick up requires everyone to drive behind the school and pull into the gym parking lot where there are two traffic lines. As you arrive to pick up your student, each traffic line should pull all the way up to the parking lot exits so as many cars as possible can pull into the parking lot.
NOTE: Please be sure to drive carefully at all times, be aware of students walking across the parking lot, and follow directions being provided by staff.
Senior Vaccination Requirements
MCV4 documentation is required to be turned into school nurse before September 25. Please bring a printed copy to Tammy Franklin, school nurse, in the front office.

Medication at School
This is a quick reminder of School Board Policy Code: 6125 (Administering Medicines to Students).
This policy covers the process for administering medications in detail, but the key detail I want everyone to keep in mind is that a health care practitioner (licensed medical professionals who are legally authorized to prescribe medications under NC law, such as doctors of medicine, doctors of osteopathic medicine, physician assistants, and nurse practitioners) MUST sign the Physicians' Order Form prior to medication administration at school. Parent/guardian signatures are required as well, but without the health care practitioner signature, medications cannot be administered. This includes ALL over the counter (OTC) medications.
Beginning of Year Documents
Every year, we ask our families to review and sign off on documents pertaining to their child's learning environment for the upcoming school year. Many of these documents can now be signed digitally. We ask that our parents and guardians review the documents listed below and sign the necessary items for each of their students.
To Be Signed:
Parent Guardian Verification Form
Tech and Digital Citizenship Agreement
