An estimated 1.3 million students from approximately 21,000 high schools across the country applied for the prestigious program last fall, with the top 15,000 being named recently as 2024 finalists. The program shared that students are vying for an estimated 7,140 scholarships worth nearly $28 million. Recipients will be announced in the Spring.
Congratulations to our NATIONAL FINALISTS:
Muntahie Ammad, Sahil Barapatre, Ari Callahan, Chinmay Govind, Suhaas Lakunde, Srihari Rajesh, Akash Sarode, Shreya Satheesh, Ayush Tripathi, Soha Vahora, and Ethan Works.
They're headed to District 3 Championships
Meet Brooks, one of our Boys Basketball team's biggest fans and supporters. He couldn't wait to meet some of our Eagles and to get their autographs after Tuesday night's HUGE WIN over the reigning PIAA state champs. Without a doubt, Brooks will be cheering on the team as they head to the District 3 6A CHAMPIONSHIP game at the Giant Center on Friday, March 1, 2024.
One District, One Book
Special thanks to our students, staff, families, Board of School Directors, and greater CV community for your continued support of our annual One District, One Book event. We are so excited that, through this tradition, each year we get to celebrate the joy of reading together, as reading and literacy are one of the most critical life skills. We hope that you enjoyed this year's selection, Charlotte's Web.
Additional sincere thanks to Dr. Chad Runkle, Principal at Winding Creek Elementary, and Mrs. Kristen Richey, Reading Specialist at Hampden Elementary, for their unwavering commitment to this project. Their organization, coordination, and planning are instrumental to the success of One District, One Book.
To close out this year's event, we are excited to share the reading of the final chapter of Charlotte's Web by Dr. Milbrand, Assistant Superintendent of Elementary Education, who was hosted by one of our alumni and local businesses, Destiny Dairy Bar, during the reading.

In light of the recent incident at Eagle View Middle School, we are once again reminded that school safety is a collective effort that involves not only educators and students but also the broader community. The most impactful way that you can participate in ensuring school safety, no matter your role in the community, is to be vigilant and observant. We urge our community to promptly report any concerns, no matter how insignificant the concern may seem, to school staff, law enforcement, or the anonymous Safe2Say Something tip line. Below are some additional ways that students and parents can contribute to maintaining safe schools.
Students:
- Be a part of a positive school culture where everyone feels accepted and respected.
- Students should take school safety drills seriously and actively participate to ensure an organized response in case of emergencies.
- Support classmates who may be struggling emotionally and inform a trusted adult if you are concerned about someone’s well-being.
- Practice responsible online behavior by being cautious about the information you post online and reporting cyberbullying or online threats to a trusted adult.
- Treat school property with care and respect, encouraging a sense of responsibility among peers for the shared spaces in our school communities.
- Demonstrate positive behavior leading by example in promoting a culture of respect, kindness, and responsibility.
- Foster positive relationships with teachers, administrators, and fellow students.
Parents/Guardians:
- Establish open lines of communication with teachers, administrators, and other school staff.
- Familiarize yourself with Cumberland Valley’s school safety measures.
- Encourage positive behavior, respect, and kindness within the school community.
- Address any concerns or conflicts promptly to an adult in the school community.
- Be aware of your child’s online activities and educate them about responsible internet use. One way to remain engaged with your child’s internet activity is to have access to every app and messenger that is installed on their devices.
- Encourage your child to take safety drills seriously and discuss the importance of being prepared for emergencies.
- Seek assistance to support your child’s well-being through a school administrator or counselor.
- If you own firearms, ensure they are stored securely and away from children’s access. If you cannot afford a gun lock, our School Police Department can assist in getting you one at no cost.
- Know what your child is bringing to school through random checks of their backpacks. Look-alike weapons also cause alarm and disruption and are considered a violation of district policy 218.1.
- Finally, we encourage you to continue to reinforce with your child the importance of reporting concerns to a trusted adult or via the Safe2Say Platform.
What is Safe2Say Something?
Safe2Say Something is an anonymous reporting system designed to empower students, educators, and community members to identify and intervene in potential threats of violence or self-harm. Whenever a concern exists, it is imperative to report it. Our team would rather investigate a concern that turns out to be nothing than not be aware of a concern that turns out to be something.
What is appropriate to report to Safe2Say Something?
Students are encouraged to report threats of violence, bullying and harassment, self-harm or suicidal ideations, substance abuse, weapons possession, unusual or concerning behavior, and mental health concerns to Safe2Say Something.
Given the importance of the program, it is not appropriate to report information that you know to be false or misleading. Information submitted to intentionally deceive authorities is subject to investigation and punishable by law.
How do you report to Safe2Say Something?
There are three ways to report to Safe2Say Something:
- Call 1-844-SAF2SAY (1-844-723-2729)
- Download the Safe2Say App on a mobile device.
- Visit Safe2SayPa.org
It is important to note if submitting a tip via the mobile app or website, please continue to monitor your submission as a member of the Safe2Say team may ask follow-up questions for more information to better assess the appropriate response to the tip. Tips are received and analyzed in real-time by professionals with the Pennsylvania Office of the Attorney General.
Portrait of an Eagle: Student & Staff Spotlight
Silver Spring Elementary School's Hunter Ferguson recently showcased his communication skills as he starred in a video to unveil a reimagined hallway within his school. In an effort to maximize efficiencies at Silver Spring, what used to be an entryway into a maintenance area of the building was retooled to become an entrance to the school for students during morning drop-off and afternoon pickup. Art Teacher Amy Kovach and Health and PE Teacher Steve Flom wanted to take that hallway from bland and boring to bright, colorful, engaging, and welcoming. Learn more from Hunter and crew, and watch the transformation in the video below. Hunter, Mrs. Kovach, and Mr. Flom are a Portrait of an Eagle.
